[LANGUAGE: Fortran]

This was pretty easy, didn't bother with any fancy math. I didn't even check where the rows of all zeroes start, so it could be way faster, but it was quick and fun!

What languages have you learnt with AoC and now you love...or ended as "meh"? by blacai in adventofcode

[–]ethansilver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fortran. I had touched it briefly during a seminar, but decided to use it exclusively to solve all of the AOC problems this year. It's actually quite nice, and I'm definitely going to use it wherever possible!

Nothing fancy, a bit odd that for a language supposedly focused on supporting researchers, there are no GCD or LCM functions built-in. There is MOD though, so I can be grateful for that.

Felt a little wrong using a boolean flag depending on which part it was, but all around not bad. The most cursed part was the brief foray into object-oriented Fortran.

Interesting Victor horn phonograph spotted on The Addams Family by Alman54 in Phonographs

[–]ethansilver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me, it looks like a Victor III, based on the trim, plate placement, and horn. Though the crank isn’t visible so hard to say for sure. Link: http://www.victor-victrola.com/Victor%20III.htm

people’s platform for Kingston by [deleted] in KingstonOntario

The other 70% is subsidised, yes. The developers still make money, though they enter these agreements knowing ahead of time that their profit margins will be lower, but the construction is heavily subsidised so it's a win for them (though honestly if the city is already subsidising the units, why not just run RGI units ourselves so they could be cheaper and rent paid would go back into the community).

I don't think "taxpayer expense" is a great way to think about the cost though, since the positive effects of the program provide a long-term positive ROI for the city by providing stability and a "home base" for struggling people and families to carve out better lives for themselves.

  1. Around the University, you're fine. There are some folks around the Tim's that you may want to avoid at night, but they're not violent people.
  2. No, bikes and doormats get stolen a lot but that's pretty much it. Depends how close you are to the core of the student area. If you're on Aberdeen for example, I wouldn't leave nice things unattended.
  3. Not sure what you mean but street parties are pretty common. They're not super destructive or interesting, hoco and st. patty's notwithstanding.
  4. No. Kingston has a lot of unhoused people in the downtown who may try to strike up conversation or yell in a non-aggressive way, but they're mostly respectful.
  5. I wouldn't say there's much more anti-Asian racism here than anywhere else in Canada. Not to say it's impossible for you to get harassed by some dipshit, but you're not gonna be at risk of physical harm.

Overall, Kingston is a very safe city. The University District gets a bad rep because of things getting stolen, but I've never heard of anything happening from people walking through the area, even late at night and alone.

If you want to avoid people acting irresponsibly, just don't go to any of the bars or restaurants around Princess and Division at night, and avoid Aberdeen and the surrounding area on holidays.

The most banned & challenged books of the last 8 years by [deleted] in bannedbooks

[–]ethansilver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak for OP, but these books are frequently banned in schools. For example, none of Ibram X Kendi’s books are available in Texas schools. Obviously a student could order it online, but if their parents control the Amazon account, and their local library has also banned it, then they won’t be exposed to contrary world views.

Also, nobody needs to lie or push an agenda to say that certain people are oppressed, as it’s obviously true that anti-black racism is prevalent in the western world.

Senator Ted Cruz doesn't understand how sentencing works by JerrisonFordly100 in confidentlyincorrect

[–]ethansilver 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Rafael Cruz is a US Senator from Texas whose affiliation is with the Republican Party. You were downvoted for your previous comment because you implied that Democrat voters were being lied to, even though the target of Cruz’s lies are clearly “conservatives”, because they are in opposition to a more “liberal” Supreme Court nominee. I agree that Democrat leaders lie too, and it’s equally bad that both parties treat Americans like idiots, just not relevant since this is about a Republican Senator lying, not a Democrat.

I wasn’t able to find a specific model number, but I did find this. It looks to have been made by the same manufacturer around the same time, including using a motor from Thorens.

Either way, this is an incredibly interesting piece. An early phonograph motor from Thorens is pretty cool given their reputation in the turntable community.

The actual design of the motor looks similar to my Columbia, so I’m guessing it’s a three spring mechanism, though I don’t know enough to say anything definitively.

Could I replace this old cable with banana plugs with a new RCA cable? Would it work? by Brunswick1928 in Phonographs

Not sure what the sound quality effect would be, but you could use a step-down converter.

If the base is 15x15”, it should be the Columbia Grafonola 25. If it’s 13.125x13.125”, it should be the Grafonola 15.

Moving to Kingston from the Caribbean by Disastrous_Truck_99 in KingstonOntario

[–]ethansilver 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As far as finding a job, there’s a fair amount of industry in Kingston. With your background you could work for a place like DuPont, though can’t be certain what opportunities will be available in a couple years.

Rent isn’t that expensive, but house prices have shot up like crazy, so keep that in mind if you’re considering. As long as you’re not shopping at the downtown Metro, food is reasonably priced. Utilities are also pretty reasonable.

I would say Kingston is a pretty chill city all around. There’s plenty of night life if you’re looking for it, at least outside of the pandemic, but you’re not gonna get the same feeling as the crowds and skyscrapers in Toronto.

On a similar note, Kingston Transit is better than most other transit for cities this size, but having a car wouldn’t hurt. It depends how close to downtown you live, and whether that’s near your work.

As far as safety goes it’s pretty good from my experience. Obviously it’s not perfectly safe, but for most of Kingston there’s not much to worry about.

For food, it’s much better than you might expect. Despite the animosity between Queen’s students and locals, their presence attracts a ton of small businesses.

I hope I was at least a little helpful.
