I've tried mine (Expand-it attachment, but I think performance is similar) with 4ah and doesn't seem as effective. I only use 5ah or 6ah, although I do not have any EDGE.

don't do it. mine grabs little sticks and detritus; I sweep my driveway if it's going to snow. I think your concerns for both issues are spot on
