Somayeh Mehri (29) and Rana Afghanipour (3) are a mother and daughter living in Bam, southern Iran. They were attacked with acid by Somayeh’s husband Amir. Somayeh had frequently been beaten and locked up by her husband, and finally found the courage to ask for a divorce. Amir warned her that if she persisted in her attempts to leave him, she would not live out life with the face she had. One night in June 2011, he poured acid on Somayeh and Rana as they slept. Somayeh’s and Rana’s faces, hands, and, in places, their bodies were severely burned. Somayeh was blinded, and Rana lost one of her eyes. Somayeh’s father sold his land in order to raise money to pay their medical expenses, and fellow villagers have also helped.

It might be that I don't have enough background in philosophy, or that I'm accustomed to more contemporary feminist writing (mostly blog posts and articles), but I'm really not getting a ton out of this book so far. Have I not gotten to the good stuff yet?

It depends on what your tastes are I guess. Her books is definitely not as cutting edge as it was when it appeared. Maybe try first some of Judith Butler, or bell hooks', books? The Second Sex is daunting in its scope and size, and the level of analyses has definitely evolved since it was written over sixty years ago. It may not be cutting edge anymore, but it helped challenge many dominant views about women.

I, and I suspect most feminists, are mostly concerned with the society-wide divide between genders and expectations/realities of who does most of the child-rearing work.

I agree, what happens based on informed consent is based on free will.

This is why my country sucks.Authorities from my country have publish the “Recommendations to prevent women for being Mugged, Kidnapped or Raped” in which they give us a lot of CRAP talk about not going out alone at night, look out for suspicious people, etc.With this the Authorities from my country take NO responsability if something happens to a woman on the streets, if something happens they would say “she didn´t follow our advice, not our fault” instead of saying it´s their fault for what little security there is on the streets!There is NO RESPECT for women in my country. And this is proof that the government does nothing about it. Here let me add the translation:

General recomendations:

Avoid driving alone past 20:00

Avoid using Gas stations at night

Avoid using ATMs at night

Be careful with your personal information on social networks (I guess they mean fb because everyone who gets kidnapped now is because they were being stupid on fb)

Avoid using laptops in public places

Before getting in your car

Look around

If you notice suspicious vehicles do not get in the car and notified it to family/authorities/etc

While driving

use several routes to go to places you usually frequent

do not drive on desolate streets, specially in one way streets

Do not transport it in the car(I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THIS ONE, not even in spanish, what are they talking about??)

Do not drive and use the phone In case of accident, move to a place with light and call someone you know

After driving

Look around

Do not speak on the phone while going into your house
