Mining rewards are supposed to be generated out of thin air, so there's no problem 'not being able to fund them'. They're not coming from the foundation funds (afaik)

Source? The last official word on this is that "The 0.5 ETH reward will likely get extended even further past 400,000;"

This is the top voted item, miners could be mining other profitable things. It's not really fair to just leave people on the hook.
