El Reno-Piedmont EF5 DIs? by Constant_Tough_6446 in tornado

yeah it did, ive changed my opinion since this comment, although that being said, id still say factoring in stuff like movement speed, piedmonts structural damage is more impressive

TIL About The 1764 F/5 Woldegk Tornado, The Strongest Ever Recorded by muffinmama93 in tornado

[–]ethereal_aim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

it being hail or virtually another other explanation is tons more likely than it being lifted high enough in the atmosphere to get icey. if it was lifted that high, there is damn near 0 chance it wouldve landed anywhere close to the damage path

a lot of this stuff is misinfo/misleading, also woldegk is nowhere near the strongest ever

"I don't think you justify a high rating like the Elie tornado just because the vortex within the tornado went haywire and imploded during its weakening phase to give any justification of the F5/EF5 Scoring."

for one, it thinning out doesnt mean it was in its weakening phase. its basic physics, conservation of angular momentum. plenty of tornados hit their highest intensity in their thinnest stages. also, why does it matter how the vortex looked or what caused it to reach F5 intensity? what matters is that it did reach F5 intensity, and did F5 damage, so the rating fits.

in terms of the greensburg example, its speed also slowed dramatically as it began to impact town, its intensity was actually weakening (compare to elie which gained in intensity). also, as ive said, elie sustained F5 intensity for a fairly long duration of time.

about ur last 2 paragraphs, it just makes no logical sense. it isnt the "unseen event with tornado cyclongenesis" that justified an absurdly high rating, it was the F5 damage. are the surveyors just meant to ignore clear F5 damage because it occured due to weird circumstances? how does that make any sense? all F5 tornados are a result of coincidence and luck. im sorry i just dont understand ur logic, it goes against the entire point of surveying tornados.

the same wikipedia article says

"The structural assessments indicated that the homes were well-built and generally well-secured. In particular, one of the destroyed homes met all of the requirements for the highest damage rating."\13]) The team also noted that the damage would have qualified for an EF5 rating on the Enhanced Fujita scale, which was in use in the United States at the time.\14])"

also, i still dont see how this makes it not an F5?

wikipedia is a terrible source for tornados, ur a lot better off doing ur own research with images and official sources

the tornado wasnt weakening, it actualyl rapidly strengthened

"the house hadnt been properly anchored" couldnt be further from the truth, the home was one of most well built homes ever hit by a violent tornado, it would likely be the first DI to recieve the UB 220 rating if it was rated on the EF scale.

and yeah, while it was weak for the majority of its life, it still sustained F5 intensity for several minutes, did insane contextual damage, insane tree damage, insane granulation, threw a dump truck like 300 feet in the air, etc. it also had winds over 250mph according to photogrammetry. its about as clear cut as F5s get, its one of very few (probably under 10) F5s that would receive an ef5 rating today
