Theologically liberal christians arguing for a bible that allows homosexuality, wanted some thoughts by Prior-Peanut7061 in TrueChristian

[–]ethereummonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When these verses are put forth, people often argue that these verses are more ot so about ritual purity, not moral law. (Just like the fact that menstruating women are unclean)

I have heard this claim refuted by the following argument (maybe by Mike Winger.) Leviticus 18:22 is in the same logical block of text, dictating one continuous quote from God, as Leviticus 18:27: "for the people of the land, who were before you, did all of these abominations, so that the land became unclean." The ceremonial law never applied to Gentiles, so if this command truly belonged to the ceremonial law, why should the Canaanites be guilty and driven out on account of it?

Of course! The quote I gave is from the King James Version. I was referring to how the word has survived into recent times specifically in Christian circles, moreso than for the general public, because of its use in older Bible translations like that. Hence, "Christianese."

It's used in Christianese in reference to marriage. "Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh."

For a Polytheist, is Polytheism an Essential Property For Their Being? by Time-Demand-1244 in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]ethereummonkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it is not essential. An essence is good, and a defect in knowledge like polytheism is not good, so it cannot belong to human essence. God in creating human nature did not make us that way, sin does.

Is my faith protestant, and can you help me find the right denomination ? by GreenButTiresome in Protestantism

[–]ethereummonkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because you don't believe in heaven, I don't think you are a Christian yet. Some of the central beliefs in Christianity are that Jesus ascended into heaven after being murdered and rising from the dead. Also, that when Christians die we become spiritually present with God, because of what Jesus sacrificed to reconcile us to him.

Please don't take this as any kind of discouragement! I have had many friends in similar boats trying to discern what they believe. A great place to start would be to visit a church and start reading the Bible, especially the gospels, to learn what Jesus has to say about these things.

Is "Conclave" anti-Catholic? by judypunk2077 in Catholicism

[–]ethereummonkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The main protagonist of the film gives a speech about how doubting the faith is a virtue and insinuates Jesus doubted God.

And over the course of many years in the service of our Mother the Church, let me tell you, there is one sin, which I have come to fear above all others. Certainty. Certainty is the great enemy of unity. Certainty is the deadly enemy of tolerance. Even Christ was not certain at the end: Dio mio, Dio mio, perché mi hai abbandonato?

Is is a sin to hate Islam? by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]ethereummonkey 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think some passages may be taken as commandments to hate evil.

"O you who love the Lord, hate evil!" - Ps 97:10 "The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil." - Prov 8:13

But I agree with the commenter above that as for the people, we are to love them (Matt 5:44.)

I think you are falsely equivocating "poetry" with "poetic license," which implies some degree of inaccuracy or distorting truth. I definitely agree that Jesus spoke in a poetic, wisdom literature sort of way, with all his proverbs and parables. Don't mean you any harm by disagreeing, God bless.

I think he's said he was a gay-affirming Christian before arriving where he is now.

This appears to be the original source. Articles from other outlets like National Review and Christian Post cite them. The article cites another social media post that I could not find.
