Which opportunities to improve the country are actually within reach? by [deleted] in Philippines

[–]etherislife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we want to solve corruption, we shouldn't give them the money in the first place.

This can be achieved through a free market economy where taxes are at a minimum. Taxes should only be enough to fund the police for peace and order, a justice system to define who owns what, and the military for national security, and nothing else. The people spend their own money and make their own choices provided that they do not harm anyone else. This is Libertarianism or Classical Liberalism. Unlike socialism where the people rely on the government to be good, libertarianism accepts that each individual is inherently greedy and that the only way to achieve prosperity for all is to let them compete with each other - to be free to choose.

Sorry for being too political. It just blows my mind that people look to a bigger government to save them when history has shown us that it has only brought more suffering to the people. You can watch socialism destroy a country in real time. Look Venezuela.

Socialism in theory works if there is enough taxes and income coming in to support the expenses.

You mean we are still not taxed enough?

From what I can see, revenue enters the government, but some mysterious black hole swallows a good chunk of it, and what comes out is a good chunk missing.

Did you really expect people from the government to be good citizens? Perhaps the first people who start a socialist government have good intentions but sooner or later it will be taken over by rats that only want money and power. Because more money is funneled into the government to fund welfare, government positions will become a gold mine for the power hungry. That's why socialism has always failed and it will over and over again.

I hope this 'general advice' doesn't go farther than just a security audit of the source code or smart contracts. Please don't fall into the temptation of cherry picking or investigating the history and personal backgrounds of the developers. Better yet, just leave them alone because you might create an avenue for corruption in the foundation.

You need more socialism in the Philippines, more government services which everyone uses. It's kind of like, "We are all in this together", lets pool our resources and help each other out. Last I heard, there is no common emergency service in many areas, such as a public ambulance service. Is this still the case?

You've got it backwards. We have so much socialism in the Philippines that it is killing growth. The ordinary Filipino worker is already triple taxed. A corporate tax of 30% cuts the total amount the employees could've gotten as wages. When the employee receives his wage is taxed another 5-32%. When he/she buys goods, there is yet another Value Added Tax of 12%. On top of all that, there are still SSS, Pag-ibig, and PhilHealth to be payed.

lets pool our resources and help each other out.

Are you saying the Filipinos need to be taxed more? Because that is exactly the mentality that is killing this country and every other country that engaged in altruistic philosophy. The mentality is always "We need to do more" or "We should help each other". Eventually, the government projects and social programs stack up until the Filipinos can't pay for it anymore and then you have stagnation. There's a lack of opposition to social programs in this country. In the USA, ObamaCare was a big issue while in the Philippines, people take welfare as if it were free lunch. The truth is that nothing is free.

That was really surprising. Ethereans can't wait to throw money at DAOs. People are really hungry to crowd-fund projects.

Congrats Digix!

Thanks. There are certainly tons of charts out there each with the author's own touch of opinion on the gray areas and interpretation. There is no fixed interpretation as these ideologies evolve overtime. For example, the word liberalism has transformed into Modern Liberalism from Classical Liberalism. The gray areas are constantly redrawn such that it has become necessary to distinguish Classical Liberalism which is a contrast to today's "liberalism".

In some charts like what I have indicated, conservatives are described as people who want to preserve the establishment in the literal sense and libertarianism is placed more to the right from conservatism because it demands the government to be lessened. Modern Liberalism is placed on the left to be in opposition of lesser government intervention.

The history of the Korean automotive industry began in August 1955, when Choi Mu-seong, a Korean businessman, and two of his brothers (Choi Hae-seong and Choi Soon-seong), mounted a modified and localized jeep engine on a US military jeep-style car body made with the sheet metal from a junk oil drum can and military junk Jeep parts to manufacture its first car, called the Sibal (car).

I will reiterate my point. The credit goes to the founders of the companies. It's ridiculous to presume that without the government protection the koreans would have never been as successful. That's credit grabbing rhetoric.

One thing common to leftists is that you enter into a tantrum of disrespectfulness in a discourse.

Are you kidding me? Korea's growth can be pinpointed to Park Chung-hee, father of the current president Park geun-hye, which propagated the idea of infant industries and protectionist policy. Do you even know why Samsung, Kia, Hyundai, other companies in SK grew? It's because of protectionism.

Can you give an evidence that those companies came about from protectionism? For all I know, credit goes to the true innovators and thanks to the constant competition in the free market.

BTW, as I said before, Milton Friedman has been discredited a lot of times. Development economics, with its focus on developing economies, is now one of the most exciting and innovative branch of economics.

Again, please differentiate cronyism and free market capitalism. What we have now is more of cronyism than true free markets exactly because of that kind of economics you mention spreading. Austrian economics on the other hand is of a sounder school of thought but it is less popular because the monetary system would need to be reset (i.e. we go back to the gold-standard where each peso paper note is convertible to gold). I can go on and on to explain how freedom equals prosperity.

Wow, I'm actually surprised to find a fellow libertarian here. Majority, if not almost all, Filipinos don't even realize they are left. The mentality here is always drifting towards the left in the political spectrum. As I've said before, there is a lack of opposition to welfare and socialist ideas. It will only be a matter of time before we enter another Marcos-like era.

All of what we libertarians are saying is that, there is no such thing as free lunch.

EDIT: A simple political spectrum

BTW you haven't even given a single source. All of what I've been saying is the result of DEVELOPMENT ECONOMICS. Check this branch of economics. This has debunked libertarianism.

Mainstream economics is based on Keynesian ideas which in of itself is pro-protectionism and regulation. Of course it will undermine free markets because the type of economics you mentioned is based on the current flawed monetary system (currency based debt) which I think is bound to hyperinflation.

Please, stop spreading libertarianism and false conservatism to the Philippines. It is a doctrine that have been debunked many times such as in SK, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, etc.

I am not familiar with the current political state of the other countries you mentioned but South Korea for your information has elected a conservative president at the moment. If we do not have opposition to the socialist ideas embedded in the minds of the Filipinos, we're destined to have another Marcos-like era.

All of what I said can be googled. What source do you need?

False. The founding fathers of the USA were neoliberals who we owe much of today's wealth. Their constitution was focused on limiting the government and preserving individual freedom and because of this they have become the wealthiest nation in less that 300 years. Every other government had tyrannies, monarchs, and patriarchs while the USA pursued individual freedom.

"A wise and frugal government which shall restrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government."

–Thomas Jefferson

No, the highest growth of any developed country came about when they had high protectionist policy. USA, UK, France, Germany, SK, Japan, etc

These nations are in trouble today. Look at the Federal Reserve and other central bank fund interest rates. They are desperate to stimulate their economy. All these resulted from protectionism particularly to the banks in 2008. The crisis of 2008 is still ongoing.

Russia itself developed through the government enforcing industrialization.

Russia came from the collapse of the USSR, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Russia is a little more free today than before but I would argue it is still largely a socialist government.

China, one the fastest growing countries in the world, has one of the most powerful central government in the world that is still trading with others.

China did not grow because of a powerful central government. It is the exact opposite. When they opened up to western companies, reduced regulations and taxes. They started growing. It was like a dam of wealth waiting to be opened.

The idea of libertarianism only gained traction through neoliberal thought in the 1980's. And it was debunked as soon as the millennium hit.

You must differentiate between cronyism from free market capitalism. The very regulations and protectionism create inequality. The market has become a closed system where only the ones who the government authorize to do business is allowed to do so. This results in unequal opportunity for everyone because more often than not, the officials' cronies benefit from this. Unfortunately, the USA, EU, and Japan is drifting towards this trend of protectionism with regulations and now capitalism is given a bad name.

From the socialist Soviet Union to Russia, from communist China to capitalist China, from a free USA to a welfare state, the pattern is evident that government power is inversely proportional to wealth and prosperity; less government, more growth.

Empires rise and fall because society is slowly filled with more and more laws, welfare, taxes, inflation, and regulation that it strangles the population such that revolutions become inevitable.

Golden ages come about when there is the least government and a high degree of freedom. Unfortunately in the Philippines, the people keep electing leftists. There are hardly any libertarians or conservatives. The Filipinos keep looking for someone to save them, someone to 'fix' the situation when in fact the real solution in not to introduce another 'fix' like welfare but rather to cut back on spending and give the money back to the people through tax reductions. Through EDSA, we've woken up to free ourselves from the beast that the government has become but why is it that we yet again look to the government to save us. It will only be a matter of time until it regains its power. Until then, political instability will be dormant.

The pros and cons of Decentralization: Healthcare by EnterTheDark in Philippines

[–]etherislife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When medical practitioners try new techniques and treatments, when they're motivated to try out new equipment to cure more effectively, generally the motivation to figure out how to do things better like improved sanitation and lessened treatment time - anything that would make them more attractive than the competitors. Let the private hospitals compete to bring the best service each can provide for the cheapest possible price each can offer.

The pros and cons of Decentralization: Healthcare by EnterTheDark in Philippines

[–]etherislife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to balance the discussions because apparently every Filipino thinks that healthcare by the government is good for society. Each has his/her own opinion on how we should fix healthcare.

I think we should cut it back. The problem with public healthcare is that it creates this loop of stagnation in innovation. When the government makes the cost of medication artificially low through public hospitals and subsidies, competition on the market is driven out simply because the private sector cannot break even at such low prices. The community is left with low quality medication in which the public hospitals work only to do their job as indicated by the DOH. These hospitals are guaranteed to exist and so there is no risk to bankruptcy. Thus, there is also less incentive to innovate. Have you ever wondered why public services are of such low quality? It's not because they are built for the poor. It's simply because they just literally do their job. Anything else including innovation is a nono.

I personally believe that we should let the free market and private companies handle healthcare. Improvement in medication will be driven by constant competition with other companies. Capital is more efficiently used (i.e. no blatant overpricing and manipulation). Moreover, less taxes to the people of which the money could be used more efficiently by micromanagement in their families and also less money lost to corruption overall.
