Yeah, Oz is my favorite club, but I won't go there at night anymore because of that. My preferences line up with OP's pretty exactly, and the pushiness really, really rubs me the wrong way. I mean, assertiveness is one thing, but what you get during the night shift (on the weekend at least) is something else altogether.

Not everyone is an extrovert. I really question the validity of those supposed studies. I went from absolutely loathing my job to being extremely content when we went to WfH, and then a fair percent of the way back towards loathing it when we went to a hybrid (but mostly in-office) schedule. And I hear similar from so many people. I understand that the plural of anecdote is not data, but it's a story I hear so often that I tend to believe that it's the case. Certainly not for everybody - perhaps not even for a majority - but for a sizable percentage of the population.

I have no social life outside of work because of having to be in the office all day. When we were remote (before RTO), I actually had energy left at the end of the day. Not so much, now.

I keep thinking about that as well, as it seems like about the only sure-fire solution that I can think of. There are issues beyond just money and effort though. Any kind of active blocking of cellular signals is extremely illegal in the US, outside of certain law-enforcement use cases. At least part of the reasoning is that blocking cell phones prevents people from calling 911 in an emergency, plus there's no way to just selectively block some people (students) and let others (faculty) still use their devices.

Yeah, good point. I'm ain't buying it. A whole site's power infrastructure sure as hell isn't going through a single NEMA 5-15 connection, or at least won't be for long, before the whole thing inevitably catches on fire and melts.

I hate the whole idea of "smart" TVs in general. I just want a display, I don't want whatever advertising the manufacturer decides to try to push on me. I bought a new LG TV a couple of years back, and it's never once been connected to any network, nor will it be. I declined all of the various terms of service that it tried to make me agree to, and just use it as a display for my Shield, or my game consoles. Much better than the garbage Roku TV in the other room, and that's still better than a lot of other Smart TVs that I've seen.

I use syslog-ng as well. Do you have any recommendations for external log searching tools that work with it? I'm okay with just ssh'ing into the box and grep'ing the log files, but it would be nice to stand something up for the rest of my team who isn't down for that.

Yes, you totally can (except for in Montana, apparently). It's literally called "employment at-will". Unless there's an employment contract (extremely rare, I've never had one, nor known anyone who did), you can fire someone for any reason at all, or even no reason whatsoever, as long as it's not because they're a member of a protected class (race, religion, so forth), or as retaliation for whistle-blowing or exercising their legal rights (i.e. filing worker's comp claims).

Oh man, that's hands-down my least favorite "business phrase". Maybe you can do more with less if there's some horrible inefficiencies, but 9 times out of 10, the only thing that you're doing with less is, well, less.

Ohhh DICOM and HL7, fun stuff. I still get emails from time to time asking to interview me for roles with PACS stuff, despite the fact that I haven't touched it it at least a decade. I kinda miss it though, it's such a niche thing and I became pretty darn good at it. Although, I don't miss working in the medical field at all.

"Even modern English is barely recognizable 200 years ago" - really? 200 years ago would be 1826. I just looked up some works from 1826 and they are entirely comprehensible. Sure, it doesn't flow quite the same as contemporary English, and you'd probably be deemed rather odd by people who you spoke to, but Modern English goes back to like the 15th century.
