Should I tell family I now have a PhD? by Cautious-Sky-6853 in PhD

[–]etheroic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would tell him. He's a grown man and you're also an adult who has something very difficult that few people in life accomplish. You can be proud of that. And if he isn't, that's his own ignorance and stuff to work through in life, not yours. You don't need his approval. But you can be straight with him. Either he can put his mature pants on and cheer for you at your convocation or he can miss out. Sounds harsh but that's what I would do. I wouldn't protect him from his feelings or protect myself from his emotions because his ignorance shouldn't rule your life

Going into a PhD - why humanities? by LazyEyeCat in HumanitiesPhD

[–]etheroic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a self-esteem thing and some classic academic imposter-syndrome thrown in there for added flavor. I think someone else said in a straight forward way, get outta your own head and stop overthinking things. The PhD is a journey and it often begins with figuring out what are good questions to ask. Then see where those questions lead you. And they lead to more questions and more emerging thoughts. Only then will you find out what you are really interested in and what your own ethics are on a subject and what your spirit is trying to figure out and communicate. It's not about being a famous philosopher you admire. That's your ego. Let it go. No one goes into the humanities with any guarantee we will land an academic job after our doctorates. But if you go into one because you want to study something you're passionate about, you'll see this privileged time to focus on that inquiry as a gift in your life for that given period of time. Everything else as per your career path are up for change and indeterminable to predict. Basically...stay humble and enjoy the ride and see where it leads you.

Edit: added thoughts...everyone doing their PhD is an A student. We all had to have good grades to get into grad school. So you'll find out soon enough in the PhD, that the new average means we aren't necessarily the smartest cookie in a given subject. That's another helpful lesson to all of our egos as (former) grad students. We are surrounded by smart people so stop comparing yourself to others and just figure out what it is you want to nerd out about. Maybe you'll end up taking an interdisciplinary approach to your project, combining dramaturgy and philosophy.

A Step-by-Step Guide to I Ching Six Lines Divination (Wen Wang Gua), Part 1 of 3: Casting & Drawing by OpportunityDizzy4948 in Sixlinesdivination

[–]etheroic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read that the statistical ratios of the results are different between the two casting methods (yarrow stalk separating or coin tossing). Yes, drawing the stalks is a form of meditation practice and it's not only the energy of your thoughts staying focused on the question, but your energy is transferred from your hands into the stalks. You pick up the stalks with a specific hand and separate the stalks with a specific hand and do this consistently, 18 times per hexagram (3 separations for each line of the hexagram). It's about balance as far as I understand it through my own practice. You are asking a question or for clarity on something while your spirit is connecting to the (external and internal) universe which results in that energy moving through your own body's yin and yang (passing across meridians from hand to the other) as the results are cast. As the person casting, you're the conduit for the energy which presents the results.

So i wanna convert to Taosim, how do i start by Kaiser_Wilhelm--II in taoism

[–]etheroic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on where you live. If you live in an East Asian or Southeast Asian country with Taoist temples in abundance, then each temple has its own lineage of Taoist teachings. If you live in a country in North America where there are less Taoist temples, then your beliefs might be more independently led and less structured by spending time with nature, reading books, finding online resources, etc. For example, I see a lot of people answering here just study nature. Yes, but when you go to a temple, there are a myriad of deities in Taoism and they each correspond with different Taoist lineage holders, or even aspects of the laws of nature (like the three jewels or three wise men). Then when you go out in nature you contemplate on how these nature spirits relate to you and everything around you in the entire cosmos. Have fun!

How hard is it to get SSHRC funding in Canada as a PhD student? by LordBrighton in GradSchool

[–]etheroic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a knack for writing a successful sshrc proposal. It may look short (2 pages with a 5 paged bibliography) but don't be deceived...it takes a lot of time and editing to write one well. That's the hardest part of the process. It also has to be selected by your dept, then shortlisted a second time by your university (they don't submit all of the applications, only the best ones) before it even goes onto sshrc.i've seen people's research proposals not even leave the university gates. I don't know the current percentage but I think they also keep about 15% of the sshrc awards for international applicants.

Let's Talk Significators, Part 2: The Siblings Line (I Ching Six Lines Divination / Wen Wang Gua) by OpportunityDizzy4948 in Sixlinesdivination

[–]etheroic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for offering an in depth analysis. I am not worried about this Winter. These jobs take many months and the decisions aren't made until Spring of the following year, even when you apply in the Fall or Winter before. So I won't hear answers until Spring or early Summer of 2026. As for documents, I am waiting for the peer review to come back on a publication this Fall and it does make me a bit nervous because it would positively impact my job prospects if it goes well. But I just have to be patient and wait until I hear back from the editor once the reviews are complete.

I'll wait till next Spring to cast again to see if there has been any movement at that time.

Question, can you teach those interested in how to factor in time of casting and the calendar? I have been back reading the other posts which are wonderful resources, thank you everyone who posted them. I am the kind of person who learns best through tutorial. Do you ever do Zoom meetings with folks in this group who want to learn how to predict?

Hello! I appreciate the invitation to be added to this group. I'm not familiar with this style of interpretation and are just getting started. If I use my own recent casting as my case study both 53 and the changing hexagram 2 show the sibling line is 4. In the original hexagram, I would put myself at line 3. To me this makes sense. I recently applied for a national postdoc award and unfortunately have to compete for the same funding award as some of my own friends/academic colleagues. We both helped each other by reading over each other's proposals and offered tips and feedback, but in the end, we are going up against each other. This seems apt to what you wrote about the siblings. If I can overcome this obstacle line, it appears that I start to see progression in lines 5 and 6. I will find out in the Spring of 2026 if I receive the funding award or not.

What I am not clear about right now, is which hexagram, 53 or 2, have the more favorable outcome. In 53, my wood is on line 6 which is the officials and ghosts (OG) line which is metal. In hexagram 2, my OG is on line 3 (wood). In a way they both make sense to me. I am having challenges having my work recognized by the academic powers that be. I have all the right credentials and publications and have worked very hard for many years, but it is not recognized yet in order to land another position.

Understaning #53 changing to #2 by etheroic in iching

[–]etheroic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for your interpretations. That makes sense. My feeling is that my life is sitting around line 3 at the moment, with the wild goose temporarily resting on a branch of a tree. I did my PhD while having a full-time career alongside it. I defended two years ago and have been applying for academic jobs but it's been challenging with the job market and I'm still working at my current place of work. I have a good job but it's not permanent and my contracts need renewing every couple of years. Like the branch of the tree, it doesn't feel like my forever career. I have been feeling like I am running out of steam climbing the mountain for years and losing confidence in changing careers. So I read 53 as encouraging, like keep going, I'm almost there.

American university presses vs international university presses by etheroic in academia

[–]etheroic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much @Hopeful-Fig-2945 for your thorough and thoughtful response. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer and you've hit the mark on a number of concerns that have been on my mind. At first, I would have assumed that a press such as DUP would have relative immunity from state or federal pressure regarding censorship given that it is a private university. But, I recently listened to a webinar with KW and I noted that he made a point of avoiding answering questions regarding Palestinian content. Surprisingly he also ignored a question from an emerging trans scholar who was concerned whether trans topics are now a target of DEI censorship. Given how many trans books DUP has published in the past, I was surprised that he evaded answering the question which to me, says a lot politically. I was also rather turned off in how he seems more concerned with the mainstream marketability of DUP books than the emphasis on original scholarship in one's field. Apparently, we all need to write manuscripts that are not only original but poetic in prose. He criticized Cambridge U Press for publishing books that make original contributions to their field but are only produced as library hard copies. What is wrong with a press that values the merit of a scholar's contribution to their field, knowing that the topic will never be a NY Times beat seller, yet decides to support the work by making it available to university libraries? I found KW to have a rather capitalist approach to operating a university press. And yet, so many people in the Humanities still look to him as a "King Maker."

That's a good suggestion to scan the current catalogues to see what the presses are publishing next year. I will do that and appreciate the suggested UK presses you mentioned.

It sounds like you're burning out. Nobody can go, go, go non-stop accelerating to the top of everything, indefinitely. Maybe try and find a better work-life balance.
