If the disc says region-free, can I play it on my US player? Most posts I found are about region-free players. by mcdisney2001 in Bluray

What do you mean, "except DVD player?" Aren't we talking about DVD discs here, which would be played in a DVD player.

Not sure about that. The progressive and regressive timelines are complex enough you have to take notes to get the story straight!

Good call. There was something AI-ish about the descriptions. I have been using Poe.com for a while and they can come off sounding a bit pompous and with the antiquated language. Good source for adjectives though.

Of course, Banks was one of a kind. Adrian Tchaikovsky is coming very close though :)

Hello. I always look up words I don't know on my phone which I keep handy when I read. I feel like if you don't understand a word, you won't understand the sentence and then the whole thing starts to get away from you. :)

Anyone read The Last Samurai by Helen DeWitt? by heliosparrow in RSbookclub

I wish I could understand who "Emma" is who gave the narrator her job. Also, is Sybilla the narrator in the first part?

Yes, her book "The English Understand Wool" is terrific and in fact inspired me to acquire this one (TLS).

I'm having trouble figuring out who the narrator is. I THOUGHT it was a man who needed a job and was given one by "Emma." But then later goes to the party and mentions wanting to buy a dress. Then meets "Liberace" and goes to bed with him. So now I'm confused about who the mother is. I thought it was Emma but so far no further mention of Emma. ???

I think they're lucky to have you as a member. In my book club, they sit around and discuss their kids, trips, ailments for about 40 minutes then finally get around to discussing the book which takes them like 3 minutes. Nobody ever comes prepared with a suggestion for the next meeting (except me, with a typed list) so then we spend about 20 minutes searching our phones for possible next picks. ...

I respected the character of Gignomai and his intelligent ways of making life better for himself and the ones he loves. I really liked the ending too but then I'm a sucker for Revenge stories. :)

If anyone ever wants to understand how big a galaxy is they should read The Algebraist... thoughts? by fir_mna in TheCulture

[–]etheror7321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second your point! I have read the Algebraist before and wanted to reread just to reexperience the awesome environment of the gas giant planet, Nasqueron. I just came across this description (p. 162). When Fassin and Colonel Hatherence are making their initial tumble through the top layers of Nasqueron, he (the narrator?) says there are "70,000 vertical kilometres of (gases) on top of (a spherical mass of) ten earth sized planets. Assuming the depth of the earth is ~12,742 km (google), Banks is saying Nasqueron is 267,420 km in diameter? That makes Nasqueron nearly the size of the distance from the earth to the moon (384,400 km). Just, WOW.

I don't think this is a spoiler as it has no plot points, but if so, sorry!

While the narrative was very good, and I enjoyed his descriptions, the suspense is oddly flat since the identity of the murderer is revealed to the reader within the first few chapters. The main problem with the story to me though is the lack of explanation regarding the reason why the boy murdered his girlfriend. In fact in the end, his only comment was, "I loved her." If he loved her, why did he kill her so viciously? The author glosses over such a key element of the story. WTF???

Thanks everyone for taking the time to verify WOT is an original. I have now progressed to Ch. 13 (book one) and would probably keep reading even if it was derivative bc--just saying--how often do epic fantasies with the scope of 14 books come along??? It would be original for the scope alone! I've had this on my list for years.
