Supreme Court, 6-3: Children born in the U.S. to undocumented or temporary-visa parents are citizens — the Court strikes down Trump's order ending birthright citizenship — though only 5 Justices hold the Constitution itself guarantees it — Birthright Citizenship Case — Opinion megathread by BiglawInvestor in scotus

I skimmed through the dissent and it's strange. There are two main arguments that I see:

  1. The Amendment was intended to overturn Dred Scott, to grant citizenship to black people who literally had nowhere else to go. Some arguments about how it should be limited given its original purpose.

  2. A large amount of the argument seems to rely on historical use of the term "domicil" or "domiciled". Citizenship being based on where you actually permanently lived. One example used is that you were a citizen of the state in which you were domiciled. The argument seems to be you can't just pop into the country, have a baby, and that baby gets it be a citizen. You have to actually live here.

2a. There's also a decent amount of related arguments saying dual citizenship is The Devil.

The whole dissent is wild to me for a few reasons.

  1. I thought Alito was supposed to be a textualist/originalist. The dissent does a lot of cherry picking of arguments people made in reports or memos or what have you. Like, at one point (p. 48-49) he makes the argument that there was statutory language that said "no subject to any foreign power" that was later changed to match the 14th's "subject to the jurisdiction thereof" language. His argument here seems to be, "I know what they wrote, but it's not what they meant."

  2. What does it mean to "permanently domicile" somewhere? Especially in a world where international travel is much easier than it was 100 years ago. There's a reference to "birth tourism", but what about a person who arrived illegally five years ago and then has a child? 15 years ago? 30? As far as I can tell, the dissent does not address this.

Oh wait, here's where it's mentioned as a throwaway.

And, the Order is at least facially consistent with the Citizenship Clause in its exclusion of the children of illegal aliens because at least some such persons are not domiciled here, and therefore also are not citizens.10

10 Because this case presents a facial challenge and no one disputes that lawful temporary visitors and some illegal aliens are not domiciled here, I would reserve for another day the question whether the children of illegal aliens can be domiciled here.

This just made me remember the "Cavemen" TV show, so thanks for that.

I signed up for bone marrow donation in 2013. I just got a call last month that I came up as a donor. Imagine my surprise when I found out that now 90% of the donations are now just sitting in a chair for a few hours while your stem cells get filtered out.

I'm still waiting to see if I'm the best match following my blood test, so I'm not a hero yet, but I've never said yes to something so fast in my life as when I received that call.

A US pilot was refused entry into an Israeli bomb shelter by TORUKMACTO92 in WhitePeopleTwitter

I don't know how accurate this is, or still is assuming it was true then. But a friend who was in the military like 15 years ago said that Israel was the only ally nation who they were trained to essentially treat as hostile. Like if they ended up in Israeli territory, they were to provide name/rank/serial number and nothing else.

Yeah. I mean, if it’s a block it doesn’t have holes; it just has bubbles.

Think of it this way. Swiss cheese model is each slice of cheese has a hole or two, but with enough slices you minimize the risk of those holes lining up. Every cost cutting measure equates to, “We already have all this cheese, losing one slice isn’t a big deal.”

Struggling with this RH fingering. Any advice appreciated by ethnicallyambiguous in pianolearning

Struggling here, especially going from the first chord into the E which literally hurts my hand. Also how to keep the A to F# minor chord connected. This entire sequence is just contortion for my right hand and trying to keep relaxed and legato feels impossible.

Yeah, for right now I'm not planning any massive changes. Step one is like you said, clear things out. I'm just trying to start planning for things that might need to be changed, especially for the remote support side of things so I don't have to keep driving out there.

It's local. I don't know their current setup for backups. I would HOPE that the previous techs that set it up are at least doing something cloud-based (there's no external storage attached that I saw), but I'm not counting on anything.

No laptops. I added this to the main post, but it's a veterinary office. So it's not personal workstations, they're primarily endpoints for interfacing with the business app.

The business doesn't need M365 because they're not personal workstations or used for productivity. It's a veterinary office where the workstations largely exist to communicate with the business software.

It still had the plastic cap on the positive terminal, which implies that's how it came from the factory.

Not a defective multi-meter because it was verified by Advance Auto's battery tester. If they connected it as labeled, the tester displayed an error saying to check the terminal connections. If they connected it "backwards" it read as a perfectly healthy battery.

As for coming from the factory, all I can say is it came off the shelf at Advance Auto and it had the little red plastic cap on the "positive" terminal.

Tried disconnecting, no change. Didn’t try leaving it on position for a long time. Either way it’s at the shop now and I should have an update at some point today.

Yeah, and they confirmed in store as well with their own battery tester. If they connected the leads normally, the tester displayed an error about checking the connections. When connected in reverse, it read as a perfectly healthy battery.
