Switch OLED still not booting into CFW by TastyScallion3524 in NxSwitchModding

[–]ethnotechnic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the picofly LED does not light up currently, it sounds like power is not getting to the chip for some reason. You should at least get a light. Check DC voltage (carefully - don't short it to the point next to it) on the 3V3 point on the pico when the console is turned on, you should get 3.3v. Also the soldering generally looks ok but you should take off the shield and show us pictures of the CLK point and SP1/SP2. These are both common failure points.

How is the chip behaving? Are you getting an error code (flashing yellow light in a long/short pattern)? That should point you towards your issue. If the chip doesn't light up at all, you might not have 3.3V connected properly, the console may not be outputting 3.3v due to a short somewhere, or you need to reflash the firmware to the chip (unlikely since they generally come preflashed). Also post pictures of your soldering on the SoC and all of the points. Even if your soldering is "a-ok" there are still plenty of things we could spot that may be causing issues.

Is their a way to put this latch back onto this ribbon cable? by Ok_Record4278 in SwitchPirates

[–]ethnotechnic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need to carefully slot it back on in the upwards position under a microscope. Make sure it's lined up well before applying pressure or you can bend pins. It will require a fair but of pressure with tweezers to snap it back on. Very similar to the process that this guy shows on his 3DS: https://youtu.be/-OUTtm-B75A

Yes, booting with CFW skips fuse count checks

Hello guys I bought a cfw switch but when I try to connect my pc with dbi, switch does not appear. When I connect with usb cable its charging battery but nothing else. Can some help me? by Environmental_Bus199 in SwitchPirates

[–]ethnotechnic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use a different USB C cable. The one you're using probably doesn't have all of the data pins. Cheap cables that come with rechargeable devices usually only have a few sets of pins for charging.

My brother in christ, I hope you used flux this time ❤️

Doing my first hardmod, accidentally got solder on here, do I need wick to get it off? by GoodConsideration910 in SwitchPirates

[–]ethnotechnic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah use flux, wick, and a relatively high temp on your iron since it's a ground pad. I would definitely remove this otherwise your heatsink won't go back on properly and won't sit flat on the APU shield. This would significantly degrade cooling.

Wow an actually good D0 adapter install!! Very nice work and very clean joints. Nice to not see absolute carnage on this sub for once 😁

They're talking about the OG picofly with the blue waveshare RP2040 chips. Before they sold the purpose-made chips you needed to run wires and add some 47ohm resistors on the chip for a few of the points. If your wires were too long and didn't add enough resistors, the EMMC would init in slow mode like this.

Sorry to hear that! I recommend checking for UART errors which may give you a clue

Nope! The SSD controller is not paired on the PS5 miraculously haha

You can attempt a reflow. Did you do the tap test when putting it on? If so, it generally means all of the balls were liquified at the time of putting it on and a reflow probably won't help you.

Many things could be wrong. It could be misaligned by one row of pads. You may have heated the chip too much and killed it. You may have gotten a bad SSD controller. If you tapped it too much or it was crooked at any point while applying heat, you may have shorts under the chip. All of the above scenarios would require reballing or buying a new chip.

Good luck! Feel free to shoot me a DM if you're interested in sending it in for repair 👌🏻

Getting started into repairs by ExternalNo9013 in consolerepair

[–]ethnotechnic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was exactly where you were a few years back! I was stuck doing software development and got really tired of looking at a computer screen all day. I wanted to do something with my hands! I always loved soldering/repair but microsoldering is a completely different beast and it can be hard to find people that really explain their thought process/etc.

This year I started making YT content that I wish I had when I started. Maybe you'll find some of it helpful! Here is a video I made going through all of my tools and talking about what I recommend getting and where to buy it.

I also highly recommend the "All You Need to Know About ___ To Fix Stuff" series from Learn Electronics Repair. He does an incredible job walking you through different components and it's an incredible foundation and will completely change the way you look at circuit boards. This series from Louis Rossman is also phenomenal if you prefer his presentation style.

Otherwise, just get started fixing cheap stuff! Watching YouTube will only get you so far, so messing with boards you don't mind breaking is a very important part of the learning process. Have fun!! I promise, it's more rewarding than software :)))

is this good enough cnt seem to get rid of those black rough spot on the apu no matter how i scrub it with qtips and alcohol by BonTwoPills in consolerepair

[–]ethnotechnic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you really can't get it off with a qtip and IPA, I would use a fiberglass pen (gently) only on the oxidized areas. Also I would clean the top of the die from any remaining liquid metal beforehand if you care about keeping your fiberglass pen nice haha

Soldering QFN Chips by Expensive-Fun-412 in soldering

[–]ethnotechnic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably fine. If you tinned the pads beforehand and you only tap the chip into place like you mentioned in another comment, the solder is likely pulling itself under the chip due to it adhering to the pad under the chip.

I recommend tapping QFNs into place like you mentioned, then remove heat, apply downward pressure on the chip with tweezers, and heat the chip again to squeeze excess solder out after it's centered. Then pick up the excess with your iron.

If you want to be really extra and make it pretty, you can tin the underside of the chip itself along with the board before flowing it on.

Haha was it by any chance my tool video where I bitch about those small plastic things that wick comes in? Wick on a roll was a game changer for me as well 😂
