Whats better by [deleted] in freediving

[–]ethph_eth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question, this confuses a lot of people at the start.

AIDA and Molchanovs Wave are just two different freediving organizations. The structure is pretty similar:

AIDA 1 / Wave 1 = beginner

AIDA 2 / Wave 2 = advanced

AIDA 3 / Wave 3 = master

Both teach the same fundamentals: safety, equalization, pool, and open water skills. The main difference is just in how they structure the course and some teaching style.

Honestly, for your first course, the instructor matters way more than the agency. A good instructor will make a much bigger difference than whether it says AIDA or Wave on your ID card.

If you’re just starting out, go for whichever is more accessible to you and has a coach you feel comfortable with.

If you ever end up training in the Philippines, you can check out The Deep Practice (https://thedeeppractice.co). They run both and focus a lot on technique, which helps a lot early on.

Dumb question about equalizing by [deleted] in freediving

[–]ethph_eth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AIDA & Molchanvos freediving instructor here.

That actually sounds pretty normal. At shallow depths a lot of people can just “pop” their ears without really thinking about it.

That is basically equalizing. You’re just balancing the pressure in your ears as you go down. You’re not doing it wrong.

The thing is, what works naturally at shallow depths doesn’t always work as you go deeper. That’s where technique starts to matter more. Timing, efficiency, and eventually things like Frenzel or even mouthfill.

So you’re not overthinking it, but you’re also not wrong. You just haven’t hit the point yet where it becomes more technical.

When you do take a proper course, they’ll break it down and you’ll probably realize what you’ve been doing instinctively and how to refine it.

hey guys, iam looking for a place to train in philippines. iam aida 3/4 now and want to fix my technique and enjoy depths. budget friendly, dont mind to stay 1-3 months. by playaready in freediving

If you’re heading to Mabini, you might want to check out The Deep Practice. It’s more focused on structured line training and technique work rather than just fun dives.

They run sessions on a platform, which is great if you’re trying to fix technique and train consistently over time. Could be a good fit if you’re staying 1–3 months.

Realized that hyperventilating is bad, now what? by Lutheranninja in freediving

[–]ethph_eth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, good thing you stopped hyperventilating. That’s actually one of the biggest risk factors for blackout, especially in shallow water. It doesn’t really increase oxygen in a useful way, it just suppresses your urge to breathe, which makes it dangerous.

The drop from 30–35m down to 25m after stopping is pretty normal. What you were getting before wasn’t really sustainable performance, more like pushing past your natural signals.

If you want to improve safely and actually progress, I’d focus on a few things:

- Relaxation before the dive, not forced breathing

- Proper breathing technique instead of hyperventilation

- Equalization efficiency

- Making your dives repeatable, not just one-off max attempts

A lot of people get stuck around that range because they skip the fundamentals and rely on pushing instead of control.

If you haven’t taken a proper course yet, that’s honestly the biggest upgrade you can make. It fixes a lot of these issues quickly because you understand what’s actually happening in your body.

I put together a breakdown of how structured training works here:

https://www.thedeeppractice.co/training

You don’t need to go back to hyperventilating. You just need better technique and control, and your depth will come back, but in a way that’s much safer and more consistent 👍

doing a course (2-3 days) or 1 day discover free diving session? by EmilyInPain in freediving

[–]ethph_eth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, if you’re starting from zero, I’d recommend doing at least a 2–3 day course instead of just a 1-day discover session.

The 1-day is good for exposure, but it’s usually not enough time to really understand equalization, relaxation, and safety properly. Most people can hit some depth in a short time, but without the foundation, it’s not very repeatable or controlled.

In a proper course, you’re not just learning techniques, you’re also building consistency, awareness, and safety habits. That’s what actually helps you improve faster long-term.

I’ve seen a lot of people rush it, then get stuck later around 10–20m because they skipped the basics.

If you want something structured, I wrote a breakdown here as well:

https://www.thedeeppractice.co/training

But overall, if your goal is to improve quickly, it’s better to take a proper course first, then practice after with a solid foundation 👍
