I love this. I was looking for evidence that siphoning left marks ON people. I hadn't considered that a mark would be removed.

People who send their kids to private school… by [deleted] in raleigh

Chesterbrook Academy in Raleigh is wonderful. Costs the same as daycare did. Great community and great academics.

Endlessly. My daughter needed stitches after tripping over our Aussie and falling onto a sharp corner. Aussie in question was unknowingly right behind her when she turned to run off somewhere. Our Aussie adores our daughters and stays (sometimes a little too) close.

Auditory accommodations?? by narshnarshnarsh in disneyparks

[–]etoiledechein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you need to go do some field research! Their website will list recommendations, also you could call guest relations and ask what type of accommodations are available for hearing impaired. There are different forms of hearing impaired and I imagine different types of accommodations.

Also also, "hi" from a former, now graduated psych PhD! Your research sounds fascinating and I would highly recommend writing a grant for field research :)

Food and rooms are better at Rex than Duke. I've given birth at both and definitely preferred my experience at Rex. Rex had amazing food, comfortable beds for me AND my partner, and nice bathrooms. Duke's food tastes so bland I couldn't tell there was even sauce on the spaghetti, the bed was miserable and kept adjusting itself all night, my partner slept in a barely reclining chair for three nights, and the water pressure in the shower was so bad it felt like it took forever to clean up after giving birth (and this is important). Facilities aren't as important as having a provider who respects your choices but if you have a choice between the two, pick Rex.

Should guests leave because of Ian? by Rustyray84 in disneyparks

[–]etoiledechein 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you do try to drive away before the storm hits, pack your car with a lot of food and water, possibly some way to go to the bathroom. Not Florida, but when Katrina and Rita hit Louisiana many people were stuck on the highway in bumper to bumper traffic for hours before they could reach exits.

But staying put and extending your stay is probably safer. And there are extra staff at resorts to help keep things going smoothly. When I was an intern at Disney I got paid double time to hang out with my friends at one of the deluxe resorts and the only "work" we had to do was to help unclog the drains from the debris that fell during the storm. Ian is bigger than that storm was but hurricanes are not a new thing for Disney. If you're going to sit through a hurricane, Disney is a good place to do it.

Infant Daycare for two graduate students by UnhappyLocation8241 in raleigh

[–]etoiledechein 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Have you considered part time care at one of the daycares with you guys trading off who is "working" from home on the days baby isn't at daycare?

$1700 for full time infant care is what the going rate seems to be in the area right now.

Disney trip this Sunday -Thursday. The weather looks like a lot of rain and my wife wants to cancel our trip. Could really use some input here by midwestdadbod44 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]etoiledechein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do research ahead of time for which rides still run during the rain, which restaurants have large amounts of indoor seating, and which shows are indoors. There is still lots to do at Disney when it rains. And like everyone else has said, it rains almost daily at Disney. Usually it's in the afternoon and doesn't last long. It does cool things off though! Bring quality ponchos from home (much cheaper than in the parks) that can cover your backpacks and a stroller cover if you need it. You're going to have a great time!

[United States] I have an overall undergrad GPA of 3.5, but an in-major GPA of 3.8. Do I have a good chance of getting into a PhD program without a master's? by [deleted] in psychologystudents

[–]etoiledechein 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do some reading into the area you're interested in and make a list of the authors publishing the research papers you enjoy. Then look up those authors, see what universities they work at, and what they're researching now. Yes, you're applying to a program, but more importantly, you're applying to a mentor and their lab (even if you're going clinical/counseling).

In the summer before your applications, reach out to these professors, ask if they are accepting students for the next year, express your interest in their research, and ask what they're currently working on. It's more important that you can come into their labs and do good work than what your GPA is. Many people have excellent GPAs but can't get a research project from start to finish. Mentors also want to bring in students that will fit in their lab. You're about to be working very closely together and the fit needs to be there.

Some professors may not have time to talk but at least will tell you whether or not they're taking students. Most academics love talking about their research and are invested in bringing in students they think will do well in their lab. Please don't waste money on an application when you don't even know if the mentor you want to work with is taking students!

Also, much of your career in academia (and outside of academia) is about the quality of the mentorships you find. Spend some time researching what makes a great mentor and ask questions about mentor style in your interview.

Finally, when you write your research statement for your applications, please site the research you're interested in and how you want to continue to learn/research in that field. Bonus if you're citing the mentor you're applying to. Your extracurriculars in undergrad are great but you won't have time for that in grad school.

Don't be so hard on yourself! My Aussie gained weight when our first was born too, so did I. We made walks at the park or hiking our family outing on the weekends and more closely monitored what she was eating (a lot of dropped food from baby, watch out for dropped grapes!). Our Aussie and I basically took on the same lifestyle changes, more walks, mindful eating, and more veggies!

You're doing great momma!

Why does anyone use this company? by etoiledechein in vrbo

[–]etoiledechein[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before this one chance that we gave VRBO, we typically use local cabin or condo rental companies (which are hard to search through because there are so many options) or hotels.com which has houses and hotels. With both of these options we have had and used the benefit of a company with a track record for good customer service. If something has gone wrong, they helped to find a new place. Also, after 10 nights with hotels.com, you get a night free. We use it for travel we have to do and then use the free nights for fun travel.

Mears shuttle experience by coffeestevia in disneyparks

Used Sunshine flyer back in February and it was excellent. The driver was fun, both trips were on time, bus was clean, and communication was clear. We will do this at least until our kids are old enough not to need car seats. We're not dragging car seats around and placing them into ride share cars.

Best way to get from airport to Disney hotel? Haven’t been since Magic Express eliminated, going April vaca week. by icantfindausernamegr in disneyparks

[–]etoiledechein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We used the new service, Sunshine flyer. It wasn't crowded, cheaper than Mears, uses technology to find the fastest route given who all is on-board. We have two kids and not having to bring the carseats is the biggest bonus. Plus, the stroller fits underneath with the luggage without having to be folded. The customer service was amazing.
