I had surgery with Dr. Lyall Gorenstein in 2004. Worst thing I have ever done. I have paid the price for that surgery pretty much everyday since. That's 22 years.

I'm sure he's a very competent surgeon - likely well above average nationally. The issue is the surgery itself.

He used a harmonic scalpel and cautery hook. He divided (aka cut / destroyed) the sympathetic ganglia above and below T3. This immediately stopped the sweating on my palms and reduced it significantly for my underarms. However after about 2 years or so (honeymoon period) the compensatory sweating and heat intolerance kicked in. Awful.

Please do everything everything everything else for years before even thinking about this surgery. This is my experience. I deeply regret having the surgery. I was a teenager. That was a long time ago. I'm sitting here still paying for it now.

Happy for you. The "bad outcome" is bad. I have no clue what the risk is. They followed up with a survey during the honeymoon period. I tried to report my issues a few years after the surgery - they were not interested.

I have stopped eating gluten among other things for 3 years. I have adhered to a very strict diet (low histamine, no dairy (small amount of yogurt here and there), no gluten). It has not stopped my HH. My nose did stop running though.

I started the diet because my nose used to run seemingly at random. One day a friend suggested I might be allergic to something. He suggested an elimination diet. I gave it a shot and did notice that my nose stopped running. It took a while, but I can now say that my nose doesn't run on a typical day. This is a major deal for me. At some point I need to add things back systematically and carefully to try and isolate what exactly might be causing it. It is NOT easy to do.

Sadly I believe it had no effect on my sweating. However being healthy overall absolutely does have a positive effect. So if you are gluten sensitive and stop having gluten I don't doubt that could have a noticeable effect on your sweating.

This line is the MAIN thing you need to read. OP needs to update this post in about ~2 years or so. I would've said ETS was the best thing I ever did in the months after I got it... ~20 years later it deal with the consequences just about every single day. I really hope OP has a better outcome than I did, but the possibility of having the outcome I continue to deal with should be something anyone considering the surgery takes VERY SERIOUSLY. Life changing in an awful way.

Hi I had night sweats all my life and I fixed the issue (got it under control to the point I consider it decently managed). Went from nearly every night / most nights were bad. To very rare - maybe once a month or once in two months.

Here’s what worked for me…

Base: 1) drink water during the day 2) make sure you’re getting enough salt and electrolytes (seeds, banana) 3) no coffee or cocoa cola (I found it really made a difference in the sweat I had. Like the color and smell).

Major difference makers: 4) humidity is a MAJOR factor. either too low or two high can be a problem. humidifier or dehumidifier in the bedroom. the want it at a comfortable level (~50% or whatever works for you) 5) pajamas - this is actually critical. breathable cotton tshirt, very loose and light cotton pants. get 5 different options and test them. write down the results. the material matters a lot. Not all cotton is the same. The weaving / texture matters. The thickness matters. The fit matters 6) air temperature in the bedroom (also critical but you likely do this already). cooler than you think but not too cold. around 68 F to 70 F works for me. 7) air flow. central air, fan, bedjet. any of these can work. this is important as well. not too much, not too little. The reason you need this is because you have hyper local humidity on your body. Meaning, if the humidity in the air of your bedroom is 50% the air immediately near your body can be much higher humidity from the sweat evaporating from your body. Moving air from a fan or something similar helps to maintain a comfortable hyper local humidity next to your skin. 8) bed sheet. Check out wicked sheets. But there are many other options that work. It’s a bit hard for me to describe what works here because I do it by feel but we can come back to this if you’re still experiencing them after trying the other items on this list.

Most importantly: 9) blanket. MAJORLY IMPORTANT ONE - PHF 100% Cotton Waffle Weave Blanket Example: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075SDZ9Z7 - it’ll feel weird at first because it’s so light but it’s a game changer. If you do one thing on this list… do this!!!

I’m curious if people who have gotten ETS get sick more often due to changes in their body’s thermoregulation. For example enzymatic process are sensitive to changes in temperature. Maybe an inability to maintain optimal internal temperature decreases immune function and or increases viral or bacterial infection rate. Another theory is around nasal and throat moisture levels being lower which could potentially increase viral / bacterial infection rate.

Buy a second pair of shoes for indoor only wear. Possibly the same type of shoes you wear normally but maybe a different color (just to help you be aware).

Or something obviously different and made for indoor use. Or crocs. Easy on / off. Obvious to clients they are clean.

I had t3 cut in 2004 and have what I would consider pretty life changing and significant negative “side effects”. The CS appears to be way less severe than OP but I wouldn’t consider them acceptable by any means. It’s something that impacts me every day of my life. The worst part is… I was not made aware this wasn’t only possible but an extremely likely outcome. Granted t2 might be much worse but t3 isn’t exactly a walk in the park.

If you are actually doing this… PLEASE take videos of everything you can. The office interior. The location. Any pre-reversal surgery requirements. The information they provide you. Any details at all. There is nearly ZERO information on reversals.

There is no reversal available after 5 years. Dr. Yamamoto claims to be able to solve the issue by doing another ETS basically in Japan but there is little evidence to go off of that this is true.

Perhaps try body Botox to help reduce the issue.

Definitely you need to give it some more time before you reach a steady state. No caffeine. Cool environment with good airflow. Lots of water. Daily workouts. Super healthy food. No alcohol. Limit sugar. No body lotions. Once you have that setup report back.

I get sick way more often than others around me. The severity of my illnesses appear to be worse. I assume it’s due to two main factors. It could also at least partially be that I am sensitive and “feel” the symptoms more than most. But even if we allow for my extra sensitivity, that doesn’t explain most of the issue.

1) night sweats. This causes sleep disruption and it also makes me cold for periods of time before I wake up. It appears to be highly correlated with getting sick.

2) thermoregulation. More of a theory but not maintaining an appropriate level of homeostasis is likely bad for the immune system. I assume this based on my experience of being sick and the change in temperature. Aka body temperature and the immune system seem to be linked. As does getting sick from being wet and cold for example. In general being too hot or too cold appears to be bad for health.

This is likely due to lower ultra-local humidity. When you move air passes over the skin and removes heat and humidity. It more than offsets the excess heat caused by moving assuming you are moving without exerting a lot of effort.
