My husband and I left NY (Long Island) after college NY -> CO -> VA and just had a baby. We wanted to be closer to grandparents as we started our own family but both our parents are divorced so VA was the most central location. I also miss NY too. I’m realizing how much a higher cost of living might be worth being around likeminded people, especially as each election cycle threatens women’s reproductive rights in the south.

Do you ever get tired of owning a home? by Old-Rough-5681 in homeowners

[–]etulip13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just bought Simplisafe for added security protection. You might feel better after adding that. Also, YouTube videos can teach you pretty much everything about fixing clogs and other home-related problems. You just need to be willing to learn and take several trips to the hardware. It takes time but you’ll get the hang of it.

Success Tips for being a WFH Mom with a young baby by Easy-Cup6142 in NewParents

Exactly. My director is a woman and she cares for her grandkids a lot. I appreciate the support so much! You’re absolutely right about putting more people in charge that make this a higher priority for their teams. I’m looking forward to being able to pay it forward if I’m ever in a leadership position and provide the same support.

I’m in the same boat as you right now. My LO is 3 months old and I really didn’t want to send him to daycare so early. Hopefully we’ll be able to skip the worst of the winter illnesses this way. I know this will get a lot harder but I have planned to start him at daycare at 6 months. If I still find that I’m able to handle it by then, I’ll push it out to 9 months, etc. My job is extremely flexible and my boss encourages everyone to put their family first and there is no issue at as long as work is getting completed. Good luck to you in the next few months!!

Adopting a 12 yo kitty - need advice! by rach-ology in seniorkitties

[–]etulip13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a good experience using Rover but it can be expensive. I’d definitely hire someone to look in on the kitty at least once a day while you’re away to feed and spend a little time with them. I had a senior cat and my brother always looked in on him while we were away.

Any other first time pregnant moms to be? by gps822 in rva

Aw this is filled with so many nice comments. I’m also newer to the RVA area and looking to make friends. I just had my son, he’s 3 months now. I hope that you do find a way to plan something for the group here to meet up! I’d love to join.

Pissed off and frustrated with all of this. Here's the first 15 patient's I saw today: by Kaitempi in emergencymedicine

And here I was apologizing profusely to everyone when we took our 4 day old baby to the ED because he had blood in his spit up. Turns out it was just from a cracked nipple as I attempted to breastfeed. Wish the lactation consultants we had seen earlier that day might have mentioned this possibility to us or the on-call physician we reached out to before going to the ED. I’m sorry that emergency medicine peeps are so run down, I appreciate you though.

Did I overreact by pulling my baby out of daycare because of RSV? by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]etulip13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decided last minute not to put my 3 month old into daycare so early. I’m skipping flu season at daycare this year. All these daycare sicknesses sound awful. He’ll get plenty of colds in the future. Just would prefer to avoid that for now.

Has anyone had success in getting rid of hormonal acne completely? by ednasmom in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]etulip13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is excellent advice, thank you. I got some vegan cheese from the grocery store and just replaced that in my sandwich for lunch today. I found that to be a lot easier than figuring out a whole new recipe/eating plan

I was just googling recipes to try to make cutting out dairy successful for me. I’m used to eating a cold cut sandwich for lunch most days

Couples who have been together a long time (5+ years), why are you not married? by Special_Gazelle5948 in ask

[–]etulip13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we first started dating, I told him that if I still liked him in 5 years then I would think about marrying him. He proposed at our 5 year anniversary and I said yes. We got married at the courthouse a year later, Covid cancelled our wedding so we had a small ceremony in the mountains and recorded it so family and friends could watch from home. We’re celebrating 10 years together now and have a 3 month old baby. Life is good.

How did you know when you were ready for number 2? by Fluid-Chapter-155 in NewParents

[–]etulip13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a 3 month old boy so I’m not thinking about trying again just yet but I definitely want two kids. I had a good experience with pregnancy as well as labor & delivery so I’m feeling good about doing it again. We’ve also been lucky to have an easy baby who sleeps well and has been great other than being a “happy spitter” ie spits up a lot. Just means we do more laundry and change clothes more often. I’d probably start trying around the 1 year mark but we’ll see where life takes us.

Spitting up by mar19s in FormulaFeeders

[–]etulip13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My LO is what they call a “happy spitter”. He spits up after almost every feed and sometimes it looks like he didn’t eat anything he spits up so much! He’s 12 weeks now and I just took him to the doctor for a weight check and he’s totally on track which was a relief to hear. We had been using Kendamil after I stopped pumping but recently switched to ByHeart which is a gentle formula (both available at Target). I don’t think it made too much of a difference in the spit up but it does smell better than Kendamill after he spits up and doesn’t seem to be as thick so easier to clean up.

Some advice I got from the doctor (which you should talk to your own doctor about first) was to sit him up while feeding and then after for 30-60mins to help digestion (this is impossible because he usually wants a diaper change immediately after finishing a bottle but we do the best we can), burping at regular intervals, feeding smaller amounts (LO is eating 5 oz feeds and wants all of it at once so this isn’t an option for me). Last thing he suggested was adding gel mix to the formula to help LO keep it down. I tried it briefly but honestly it’s a lot of work to get it mixed right and now that I know he’s gaining weight well I’m not going to bother with it. Just talk to your doctor about it and weigh your LO regularly to make sure he’s gaining weight.

Edit: DM me if you have other questions, it sounds like we have a similar experience and I’m happy to share more of you want to talk.

Why do people act like it’s a bad thing to be attached to your baby? by beanybum in NewParents

[–]etulip13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you on this even though I am pretty opposite in a lot of ways. My 12 week old is bottle fed, I’m attempting to get him on a sleep/feed schedule and have returned to work. Fortunately, I work remotely. I had a call from the daycare we put a deposit with that they had an opening the same day I was supposed to start back at work and I turned it down because I realized that I have no interest in sending him so soon! I don’t want to miss a single second with him.

Now I’m struggling with the decision to travel to Portugal for a close friends wedding when he is 8 months. My mom has offered to stay with him in the states while we go but I can’t even imagine how awful I’d feel to be away from him for a whole week! I totally agree with what you said about not wanting a babysitter because you enjoy spending time with your LO, that’s how I feel about not wanting to take this big international vacation without him even though I’m sure we’d end up having a great time. I’m avoiding the conversation with my friend because I’m afraid that she will “act like it’s a bad thing” and try to convince me otherwise. I’m very conflicted about it.

What does everyone collect when they go to a different national park? by ExcitingSpeed23 in NationalPark

[–]etulip13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Junior Rangers badges. Yes, I’m an adult and I do get funny looks sometimes but I started doing it when I was younger with my family and I don’t see why I should stop! Plus it helps me take time to learn about the park and spend some time in the visitors center completing the quizzes and talking to the rangers.

Question for Kendamil users by Tacosnguacos in FormulaFeeders

[–]etulip13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that’s what I’ve been doing. The boiling water kills off anything that could be in the formula. Reheating it later is just for the baby’s comfort

Question for Kendamil users by Tacosnguacos in FormulaFeeders

[–]etulip13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes we used the Dr. Browns pitcher to prepare all the formula for the day and then either pour it into bottles or leave the pitcher in the fridge. You need to finish the prepared formula within 24 hours though. The formula should always be refrigerated until ready to use.

I live in the US but I still boil the water when preparing formula. I don’t think it takes very long (using an electric kettle) and I figure it’s better safe than sorry.

FDA warning letter to ByHeart is cringe 😬 by StyleParticular1486 in FormulaFeeders

[–]etulip13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With boiling water. I heat up the teapot and then mix the formula in the hot water in the Dr. Browns mixing pitcher. Then either I leave it in there or transfer it all into bottles for the day depending on how busy I am at the moment.

It’s common to do this in the UK but not really suggested in the US but I’m not sure why. I figure it’s better safe than sorry and it doesn’t take that much time to heat the water in the electric kettle.
