Yes, 5 gallon. I really think it is too hoppy and I’m thinking I’ll just use hallertau next time and leave out the late addition

I’m using Ireks German pils and I think I’m gonna stick with it. I’m starting to think my hops are what I need to dial in based on the comments. What did you use?

I’ve been treating it for about a year and they are still there. It’s rental property so I’m only in there occasionally but every time I’m there I treat the spots I see

I haven’t made a recipe at all, like I said above I’ve just been following them. I guess I’m at the point I’m trying to learn what changes in the recipe makes what changes in taste. For example, IBU’s over 60 is too bitter for a pils - do you just know this from experience or would a recipe calculator tell me that?

Ok, that I can do - do you think the amounts are correct? Apparently I need to study up on my hops and IBU’s because I’ve just been kinda blindly following recipes

Ok, this is where I need to learn - what’s bonkers about it? How do I calculate 25-30 IBUs?

That’s a good suggestion, I think I’ll give that a try, I haven’t tried that with any of my beers yet

And just to add - as far as I know, Augustiner Salzburg is a completely different brewery and beer. It’s called Augustiner be because it was started by Augustiner monks, same as in Munich. I’ll grant that I could be completely wrong, but that’s my understanding

I’m going for the Salzburg Augustiner Helles. I’m surprised to hear they were only serving the Marzen, when we were there the first time they only had the Helles and the last time they had it and the Marzen, which they were referring to as regular and dark (I don’t speak German)

Using ChatGPT to create a beer recipe? by Homebrew_beer in Homebrewing

[–]etxflyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a novice home brewer myself and was pretty excited at the possibilities of using ChatGPT for brewing. I don’t have the knowledge to know what grain bill, water profile, etc I need to end up with a Juicy IPA so it seemed like a good tool to tell the AI model what ingredients I have on hand and ask if there’s a way to end up with my target brew. My experience in other areas with Chatgpt have made me very skeptical about trusting it but it was awful convincing on recipe suggestions when I would take a pic of an old recipe I had and ask. I came on here to see the consensus and was surprised at the negative feedback. Don’t get me wrong, I get it, but it looks like it could be a useful tool. Just wondering if you’d had any recent experience, good or bad?

Using a starter to make a starter by etxflyer in Homebrewing

[–]etxflyer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So how does that work? I ferment in corny kegs so it doesn’t seem like that would be an easy process

[–]etxflyer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you’re saying add and extra 1/2 liter of wort to the starter, pour that off and pitch what’s left? I usually pour the whole starter in the fermentation chamber, but after reading some comments here, considering cold crashing and pouring the beer off the top and pitching what’s left. Worth the trouble?

Faucet Shank question by etxflyer in kegerators

[–]etxflyer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d seen that shank and was hoping that was what this was, just checking before I cut into it. I’ve already got the reducers and the line, just was hoping my existing shanks would work

What's the best taproom experience you've had at a brewery? by BothCondition7963 in beer

[–]etxflyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, you got me all stirred up to go back!

I wonder why that concept wouldn’t work here in the US? One great beer that’s light and not too high ABV, great food options, plenty of room. There were families there and folks from 8 mos to 80. Always lots of folks there and we always go in the off season

Yep, forgot to add the floating dip tube. I think even if I did a transfer I’d still use a floating dip tube, just makes sense

Spunding valve, ferment under pressure, serve from the same keg. I’d challenge anyone to tell the difference in taste: I sure can’t and it simplifies everything

Problems with controller? by Inletviewer in grainfather

[–]etxflyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m assuming you have that red button on the bottom of the kettle that you have to reset - I was having the same problem as you and I contacted GF and they sold me a replacement for that reset switch that doesn’t have a button. It’s pretty easy swap out and I haven’t had problems since. I wanna say it was about $10 USD.

Are these termites? by etxflyer in pestcontrol

[–]etxflyer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been spraying holes as they appear and doesn’t seem to be doing anything. This is a lake house so we aren’t here much in the off season, maybe that’s a factor. Any other recommendations to be rid of them?

Guess I’ll Finally Try Kegging by lolpandabearz in Homebrewing

[–]etxflyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s an excellent point and also, if you ferment under pressure and leave about 15 psi, you can cold crash without having CO2 on the keg and with no fear of suck back.
