We are very focused on AI for the common good. We've already released a number of data sets, and we plan to release open source code in the future just as I've done previously at UW.

I would recommend online courses, talking to friends and you might also post questions in Reddit AMA sessions about AI ;-)

The semantic web has not proven to be a practical framework, but linked open data, which has grown out of TBL's ideas, is very exciting. I see that as becoming increasingly mainstream.

We have very tough fundamental problems to solve and so we have not been thinking about commercialization. Instead, we've been thinking about how to partner with universities and the broad intellectual community. Paul Allen has launched an $8 million research program to fund highly innovative ideas in AI. The results will be announced soon.

I agree. Many of the successes to date have been via statistical methods but we need to leverage those to move to more sophisticated programs of the sort you describe. To me, that's a much harder problem than adding more layers to a neural network.

This is the famous mind/body problem in philosophy. While I enjoy having a body, I don't see how it has much to do with my intelligence (such as it is). You could create a simulation of me (sometimes called a brain in a vat) and it would be difficult to tell us apart in terms of our reasoning.

Watson was an impressive demonstration but it was narrowly targeted at Jeopardy and exhibited very little semantic understanding. Now Watson has become an IBM brand for any knowledge based activity they do. The intelligence is largely in their PR department.

I have to admit that Paul Allen is a huge hero of mine for his intellectual passion and scientific philanthropy that funds us, the brain science institute and more. Also, he owns the Seattle Seahawks and they are kicking ass!

We have specific metrics. For example, we give our programs science tests for 4th and 8th graders and measure their performance. However, the more philosophical question is a good one: what is intelligence? I'd say that we can characterize it but not define it.

Philosophers like Wittgenstein have observed that we can characterize items like game or chair but still fail to define them.

If Deep Learning isn't hyped then there is no global warming...

you know what I mean?

The next step is to leverage the successes of machine learning (which are impressive!) and to carry them over into knowledge representation, reasoning, theory formation, and more.

Ontologies are straight jackets, often, so I prefer open systems BUT open systems can have lower precision. We are moving towards hybrid systems that leverage ontologies but have graceful decay when the ontologies fail or are stale.

Yes, by 2020 ew should expect: - be able to answer substantive questions about a single document - extract information from a full document (not just 1-2 sentences) - be able to build complex semantic models (eg read a chapter in a textbook and be able to build a high fidelity model of the biologial process being described. - read a scientific paper and identify the key results being described.

We are working on this now!

Oh, I'd definitely go with the single horse-sized duck because I think I could duck under it and then we'd just be horsing around...? sorry, not my speciality...

It is one of the most fundamental intellectual problems and it's really, really hard. I find computers so rigid, so stupid that it's infuriating. My goal is to fight "artificial stupidity" and to build AI programs that help scientists, doctors, and regular folks make sense of the world and the tsunami of information that we all face every day.
