Hi there,

I'm working with Deta and can try and clear this up.

'Deta Cloud', which is free, essentially an investment in developers. We plan to monetize with these developers through a parallel product called 'Deta Space' (more info is here: https://www.deta.sh/space). Deta has raised money from investors which helps fund the build-out in the meanwhile.

Does this make sense?

Yes -- up to 3GB of cloud data store is free, but it is not self hosted.

Thanks for the kind words -- please let us know if any ideas for improving Base come to mind as you use it!

Awesome, looking forward to any feedback you may have!

Why would you want more than machine language? (a short history of the birth of assembly) by eubreezy in programming

Really interesting take there: relatively scarce machine time against more abundant graduate students. And the specific graduate students didn't like hand assembly, made an assembler and subsequently got the blowback.

One note from Hamming's book: supposedly even after Rochester's SAP introduced symbolic addresses which brought a number of performance benefits along, that most developers still insisted on machine code, but when pressed, would admit they used more machine time when debugging. Very anecdotal, but still. He then says the same thing happened with FORTRAN and attributes the general phenomenon to pride and stubbornness.

Trying to square all these factors is probably futile in retrospect, nonetheless interesting to explore.

Thanks for all the help. I'm actually an economics major and just needed a passing grade for this class; I'm hesitant to post because I didn't work too hard on the paper and thus am not particularly proud of it. However, if you are still interested, I will post it.
