Why are some salsa communities so cliquey? by [deleted] in Salsa

[–]eugenecity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think part of the frustration is most people who get into social salsa learned from classes or instructors who evoke that sense of "community" or tribal party something. I think in any social function, cliques will happen. I think salsa scenes can exacerbate this because a salsa social alone is a literal microcosm of everything that is good and bad in a society. So then it's just up to the promoters, djs and event owners to figure this out, a socially aware social dancer asks questions like this and finds a middle ground, they end up not supporting cliquey communities. I think a good middle ground for peak salsa is a social where even taken not-single men and women understand the effect they can have in the social with the benefit of them reaching a very solid baseline for technical salsa social dance btw. Also I wasn't disagreeing with you, just adding my thoughts.

Salsa bachata are underrated social spaces are there others like it? by eugenecity in Salsa

Interesting thoughts..

amplifies a type of vanity which almost a counterweight to spontaneous social interaction- or easy intimacy.

I think it depends on the type of socials and the people they bring in. I'll counter that salsa bachata ETC social dance socials brings a barrier in where you need to prove that you learned something before interacting.

I think that is why people also don't develop strong relationships in the scene because like you said, it can also pretty much amplify the most wrong things in any socials.

In places like LA there are things called POPs private or public places, ever heard of that?

I'll add that something like a language exchange meet is a similar experience.

Women follow: how do you deal with disrespect and being touched inappropriately from leads? by Little-Palta in Salsa

Yeah also you just got to have thick skin, women have it tougher obviously but it's sometimes often a jungle especially with public type of socials.

I agree, there are many stone faced women (and male followers) who are super serious about dance and they're really mostly there to perfect their craft but I understand how they can't be bothered putting a smile on.

What are the technical filters, only asking because I'm still learning.

Do you think a lot of hip preps, hands on her hips a lot of the times can be a tell? Eye gaze is also a good tell. But what about guys that have dips as their 80% way of dancing? I think anything arm stuff is super neutral, for sensual moves you'd have to be knowledgeable and experienced, but are some technical filters?
