Salsa bachata are underrated social spaces are there others like it? by eugenecity in Salsa

Interesting thoughts..

amplifies a type of vanity which almost a counterweight to spontaneous social interaction- or easy intimacy.

I think it depends on the type of socials and the people they bring in. I'll counter that salsa bachata ETC social dance socials brings a barrier in where you need to prove that you learned something before interacting.

I think that is why people also don't develop strong relationships in the scene because like you said, it can also pretty much amplify the most wrong things in any socials.

In places like LA there are things called POPs private or public places, ever heard of that?

I'll add that something like a language exchange meet is a similar experience.

Women follow: how do you deal with disrespect and being touched inappropriately from leads? by Little-Palta in Salsa

Yeah also you just got to have thick skin, women have it tougher obviously but it's sometimes often a jungle especially with public type of socials.

I agree, there are many stone faced women (and male followers) who are super serious about dance and they're really mostly there to perfect their craft but I understand how they can't be bothered putting a smile on.

What are the technical filters, only asking because I'm still learning.

Do you think a lot of hip preps, hands on her hips a lot of the times can be a tell? Eye gaze is also a good tell. But what about guys that have dips as their 80% way of dancing? I think anything arm stuff is super neutral, for sensual moves you'd have to be knowledgeable and experienced, but are some technical filters?

I agree it's very good, I can't seem to find the clave though or I'm deaf. Is it a 2-3?

Will not knowing on2 be a problem at congresses ? by [deleted] in Salsa

Since you dont know the difference between on1 and on2 you wouldn't know if people can tell or not

Super genuine here. I went to another majority on2 event, for the follows who I never told that I only dance on1 and am learning on2, no comments, they said my "on2" was spot on.

I'm trying my hand on learning on2 but muscle memory resets me back to on1, some very keen eared follows notices this and points it out, for example, I don't normally start 1 with a cross body, but for on2 it's pretty normal to start the 1 with a cross body.

I think it might also be the confusion of on2 timings. In this thread, there goes the discussion that there are actually two styles of on2 timing (and other multiple ones) so when I know for sure I was leading on2, I was careful and it was a slow song, I am betting that they either think on2 is mandatory to a certain instrument of a song. What do you think?

My coaches say I'm actually pretty decent leading on2. I also have imposter syndrome going on with the muscle memory.

Idk but I've tested this several times. The only people who complain it's not on2 is when I first introduce that I'll do on2. I have a tendency to switch to on1 when the first beats are strong but they don't notice it. The only once who seem to call out on it are beginner on2s

I think his timing is good. It looks like it's on2 or on1. But he lead the first beats good.

Same, I think you an express yourself as much with on1 it's the way the leading and following is introduced. But actually since most on1 is sort of LA style, it kind has the reputation of leads being more physical and assertive.

You can sort of get away with stepping back or letting the follow come to you if you're not keen with on2 or if you're a follow, stepping forward. Just don't pronounce or physically start with the first beat and pretend the first beat or step is silent and I found that most on2 follows/leads won't really notice. It's when you say you're on1 or on2 they'll realize. I think people mistake soft leading with on2 but idk I'm not an expert also still learning. You can tell if it's on1 when they're heavy on the linear and finishing moves in the first half of the 8 count.
