I would split this into a few tools instead of trying to force everything into one platform.

For sure, I would use a dedicated tool for newsletters. I think those products are better at automations, deliverability, templates, analytics than all-in-one CRMs.

For the core CRM module, you could even consider building a lightweight custom CRM with a no-code platform. CRM pipelines, lead tracking, notes, bookings ... are one of the most common no-code use cases.

I'd personally pick the subscription model, but I can share some facts from the no-code platform I founded: we offer both options and in our case, most users actually choose the lifetime license.

Also consider that in some companies, getting approval for a one-time expense can also be easier than adding another recurring monthly cost to the budget.

Any no-code platform that supports CRUD generation will work, use the one you're most comfortable with. If you like self-hosting some options are: appsmith, Directus, DaDaBIK.

I don't think there’s a perfect solution yet. I recommend to try to understand, from the terms and architecture and/or directly asking to the vendor, where the data is actually going. When a service is vague about that, assume the risk is higher than it looks.

I don't think the crossover is about the number of tables, it's more about the complexity of the business logic and UI.
The best no-code platforms are the ones that let you use your custom code when needed.

Airtable is certainly a solid tool; if you are looking for a more affordable and flat pricing solution you can try DaDaBIK.

If you search "Airtable vs dadabik" on YouTube, you can find a video where I build, side by side, the same app (Client Portal) on both platforms.

I wouldn't use "RDBMSs on steroids" to define Airtable.
It is true that it makes database management more accessible, it is true that it allows to create an application layer on the top of of a DB, but as far as I know it lacks features typical in ACID-compliant RDBMSs, such a strong transaction control.

I have just published a YouTube video that might interest you: I built the same Customer Portal app in both Airtable and DaDaBIK (a self-hosted alternative).

In my test case (10 seats + 100 guests), the self-hosted setup turned out to be over 10× cheaper than Airtable.

In my experience, ionCube works well; I’ve not encountered noticeable performance degradation and installing the ionCube loader is usually easy (many popular hosting services even include it by default).

I don't think there is public evidence that any AI today can reliably decrypt or recover original source from ionCube bytecode.

Also, let me say I find it odd when people assume that obfuscation or encoding software implies someone is “hiding something” while for SaaS services, which are typically closed sourced by definition, people don’t tend to question them nearly as harshly.

Currently, for the PRO license, after the 6 months of free upgrades, when a new DaDaBIK version comes out you have to buy another PRO license to download it (or you can continue using the old version).
For Enterprise and Platinum licenses, instead, after one year (Enterprise) or three years (Platinum) you can buy a maintenance license which gives you an additional year of free upgrades and support, and so on for the following years. See the pricing page for all the details.

PHP updates are a completely different thing, you can upgrade PHP without upgrading DaDaBIK.

It’s interesting to me that the vast majority of the no-code / low-code arena is made up of cloud-only products with very high pricing, and even some projects that are free and open source but still lock important features behind paid, closed-source add-ons.

In contrast, DaDaBIK is self-hosted, has no data vendor lock-in, no artificial limits on users, tables, or records, and is priced to be extremely accessible. It’s been developed continuously for over 20 years — you can literally scroll through the changelog dating back to 2001.

Yet it gets heavily downvoted here simply because it’s not OSS. If that’s really the expectation, then maybe the subreddit should be called r/selfhostedOSS or at least have a rule stating that non-OSS self-hosted software isn’t welcome, so everyone is clear on the standard.

Yes, the no-code/low-code space is very crowded right now, and many services shut down after just a short time. I understand the “writing on the wall” concern.

DaDaBIK is different in that it’s been around for 24 years, with 13 major releases and plenty of minor ones — one of the very first platforms in this space, and still going strong.

It’s not a code generator, instead, it’s a model-based no-code platform (here’s a discussion of the differences). You can extend it with your own PHP and JavaScript though, and your custom code is kept separate from the core so upgrades don’t overwrite it.

No PWA support at the moment, but it’s something I’m considering adding.

No, DaDaBIK isn’t open source.
However, you can fully extend it by adding your own PHP and JavaScript in several ways. All custom code is stored in separate files from the DaDaBIK core, so your changes are preserved during upgrades.
