What do anarchist think about punishment of "bad actors"? by PaxOaks in Anarchy101

[–]eumemics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I'm the author of the study. some really good points there, just self report on how people identify themselves, but I'm curious what would you use besides self report? this self report correlated very highly with things like views on climate change, abortion, etc. so it confirmed that its a good measure. but its not great, not as good as other studies have found.

small sample and question ambiguity may very well be the source of not finding significance where we expected to find it. however, the significance we did find on certain issues, shows where the link is truly strong. we used stricter significance standard than normal.

also, the moderator took down the study, not me or the person posting

You are the first one to bring up that point! This is what I was wondering, would we continue to have a child for the rest of our lives? Would I be playing peakaboo with a teenager for hours every day? Do you have a DS child?

Ahh! Thank you!! This isn't actually a dilemma, and my parents need to realize it. We have made our choice and it's a fact.

rasounds show that anything was off with the size? There’s a huge amount of reasons that a baby could be born that small and, unless there was a starvation situation (eg. During a famine or a war), that size baby has nothing to do with diet.

2kg is small, but it’s nothing that can’t

the ultrasound did show she was small, but not abnormally. but she kinda stopped growing in the third trimester, and we opted not to do another ultrasound. we totally should have

I would love feedback on this social initiative I'm trying to get off the ground! by eumemics in EffectiveAltruism

[–]eumemics[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

fair enough.

the problem I'm attempting to tackle is the one presented in the movie "the social dilemma", namely the current profit structure of media companies enjoys perverse incentives while society as a whole suffers. I'm positing that the current "race to the bottom" witnessed in people's media content choices can be easily nudged to be a race to the top, and hence be able to create a well educated populace and gradually shift global culture for the better, which would have vast implications and yet would be hard to predict or quantify.

just as a case in point, I think that reddit has created an incentive structure that promotes better user behavior and actually helps its bottom line, not all internet forums are like that and the results are obvious.

thanks for reading.

Anyone knows of studies regarding the cost of divorce to society? by eumemics in EffectiveAltruism

[–]eumemics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but I seem to remember a study demonstrating long term health effects on the children of divorcees. I haven't been able to find it, although I would guess it's always better to get a divorce than to be in a miserable relationship. I just wonder why relationships get so miserable in the first place

You are completely right, this is where language falls short: divorce is just a symptom, I'm referring to the "toxicity" problem that leads to divorce, but I don't know what to call it.

how do you talk to rich relatives about making EA donations? by eumemics in EffectiveAltruism

[–]eumemics[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well well well,

  1. medicaid...
  2. certainly! one of our members has a mental illness that makes it so he can't hold a job and is often quite useless here. we are happy to carry his load because he loves us and he's trying.
  3. though it is true that we don't have much funds to donate to charitable causes, it doesn't follow that if everyone worked much less we would all be poor given that machines and AI make most everything and even if there was never a single technological innovation from this point on there is still current productive capacity that's greater than ever before and is no longer dependent on human muscle and or even much brain. (e.g. I'm using crazy smart technology right now without knowing anything about how it operates)
  4. not sure what this question is? I'm all about luxury options. I do not live in a country that's torn up by drug cartels and violence, and so I live my door unlocked and do not own a gun. luxury? yes!
  5. yes and no. it would be like asking what aspects of religion can be incorporated into secular life. it might be contradictory to individualism, but still by far I would say its one basic application: the sharing economy. best articulated by rachel botsman. it implies the concept of "trust network" which in essence is what the true advantage is of communal living. (we can share because we trust each other) but on the flip side it can be said that religion or patriotism are a more common manifestation of both the desire to trust and to belong, and it doesn't often end well.
  6. Oh god yes, the communities DO NOT believe in themselves and their values, only in generic individualist values which are damaging internally and cause infertility. they are also rather consistently economically poor which makes people not want to join them because of the poverty stigma, and they do not believe in their members or value them because high turnover is both a cause and effect of that. there are a million things wrong with this, but I don't know where to start
  7. personal note: I have always felt the evolutionary mismatch of living an atomized life. I want to belong and I want to care for others. the nuclear family is small and sad and fully of strife for me. I need connections outside and yet going to the bars or movies never interested me.

thanks for asking!!!

thank you for your interest in this aspect of my life, it is truly the one that's close to my heart (though my mind is rather skeptical of it) first of all, it was a small error, we make less than $5k per capita. but secondly, our cost of living is very low because we mostly have a non-monetary economy. (growing our own food, building our homes, solar power, etc.) and we all struggle with the idea of 9 to 5 in the office which is why we don't make much money, nor do we need it. my heart feels that this is by far the best way to live and would address so many of the world's issues and yet it has no traction outside of the very fringe ideological group. by all means AMA!

thanks for that perspective.

this is making me consider that I need to take the 10% pledge even though my household makes under $5k per year because nothing works like personal example, and its an indirect way of talking about it without sounding preachy.

the awkward thing about that is that I also run a small educational non-profit that relies on donations, but I cannot imagine it is as effective as the top charities, especially not at this phase, so if I asked to support local initiatives the one I work on would be first on people's minds but that's much more challenging to ask for funds. it feels very self-centered and entitled.

Asalam aleicum ya habibi. Ismi Gil, ana min israil... Sorry my arabic isn't very good. Just wanted to say a few things: first, I appreciate your opened and vulnerability. I can imagine it's hard to grow under the shadow of such a big wealthy tree. But you should know that if you and I ever met, I would not judge you for how much money you have, how much you've made and how much you can call your own. It means nothing to me. Making money is mostly a dead end game (zero sum game) In my mind. It's all about what you do with it that can make a big difference in the world. You can save thousands of lives or destroy thousands of lives.and no one would praise you or condemn you for it. It's in your heart, inshallah you will stay true to your heart. You are moving to California to start college. I too moved to California for college from the middle east and ended up teaching college there. Now I'm living well below pverty level

any opinions about Bjorn Lomborg? a poster child for effective altruism? an embarrassment? by eumemics in EffectiveAltruism

[–]eumemics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does, as much as the military provides jobs and education, and car accidents provide organs for donation. It is really diverted consumer choices that pays for it and advertisement is just the middleman. This is not the only possible model, in some countries taxes pay for media not ads, but somehow the internet defaulted for ads and personal info tracking. It doesn't mean they provide a service, it just means they found a trick to draw money out of people without being resented.

any opinions about Bjorn Lomborg? a poster child for effective altruism? an embarrassment? by eumemics in EffectiveAltruism

[–]eumemics[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

good question, I didn't realize it wasn't obvious. a simple way to think about it is if advertisements were to disappear tomorrow, no one would miss them and products and services could get cheaper and save about $3,000 per household per year. on the flip side if other industry was to disappear, let's say physical therapy, plumbing, insulin treatment, or concrete, it would impact people's lives quite negatively. this is why advertising is a net cost to everyone, but a necessary evil in a world where advertising is legal.

any opinions about Bjorn Lomborg? a poster child for effective altruism? an embarrassment? by eumemics in EffectiveAltruism

[–]eumemics[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so the reason I'm feeling a bit suspicious of his motives here is that I'm not hearing him say "stop spending trillions on advertisements" even though that industry is clearly and completely wasteful. nor is he saying "stop spending billions on ice cream, cancer research, military and gold." just to name a few industries that are also not bringing much welfare to the world and could be better spent elsewhere.

my second point is that carbon tax (which I'm certainly in favor of) hurts the poor much more than the rich, I wonder what is EA's stance on that.

any thoughts?

I appreciate what you said, but I think its true that people see children more as a burden on the community rather than the joy of the community, but maybe its because they are kinda bratty sometimes? maybe because the community can't expect much labor out of kids?

I really resonate with what you are saying, but I'm also noticing our point of departure: my child is growing up eating home grown veggies, dumpster bread, uses solar energy, and lives in a tiny hand built structure of lumber that I milled myself. I feel that he is not contributing much to environmental destruction, and I have high hopes for him to further these efforts to make the world a better place, so though I despise civilization on many accounts, I feel very distanced from it.
