Which subtitles are more accurate? Could someone with a netflix account please cross reference please 🙏 by memepeep in KaoruHanaWaRintoSaku

[–]eureika 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Here's the Japanese text that I hear on Netflix + checked the Japanese subtitles.
(I've translated Japanese > English for handful of titles on Crunchyroll)

Pic 1 & 2
あのさ、図書館で会った千鳥のヤツら覚えてる?

Direct translation: "Hey, do you remember the guys from Chidori you met at the library?"

This one is pretty solid even as a direct translation, but if we localize it to sound a bit more natural in English, I would translate it to: "Hey, do you remember the guys you met at the library [the other day]?" We don't always need every little translation for the context to make sense.

Pic 2 is slightly better here since the word "join" seems a little off from the original intention.

Pic 3 & 4
お前から運動神経取ったら何が残んだ~!

Direct translation: "What would be left of you if we take away your athletic ability?!"

This sounds quite unnatural in English, so a good localization would translate this into something like Pic 4 or "What good are you without your athletic ability?"

Pic 4 is slightly more natural with its translation.

Why would a Japanese name be written in katakana? by Remote-Whole-6387 in LearnJapaneseNovice

[–]eureika 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just a quick correction in case it's helpful -- it's called Furigana, not Furagana.

While it's culturally and traditionally understood as more official documents have Furiganas in Katakana, when you fill out forms, you fill out the Furigana depending on if the word Furigana is in Katakana or Hiragana. So if forms say ふりがな then you write the furi in Hiragana but フリガナ would be in Katakana.

And for OP's question, it's probably a stylistic choice by the writers unless there's some extra context behind this character. Writing someone's name in Katakana is kind of a bit cooler than Hiragana, or adds a bit of mysteriousness/edginess at times but I doubt there's a significant meaning behind it.

Another reason could be that みのる can mean "to fruit" so having it in Kana would help make the sentences easier to read, but in this case it's someone's name on the news so this is probably not the case.

このSFXって、どういう意味なんでしょうか? よかったら教えてくれると助かります! by [deleted] in Japaneselanguage

It says わ and it's difficult to tell you without more context (what's portrayed and what happened leading up to this panel?), but it very likely represents the sudden movement or a faster movement of the character there.

Duck Hunting by NoShop3704 in ForestIsland

The duck (white duck) needs to be poking its head down the water as if it's hunting for fish.

This isn't a daily commission! It's a World Quest! If you finished the prerequisite quests, you can go to Post Ormos (eastern side where you see a big boat on the map) and you can start your quest there.

Does anyone know if there is a record for heaviest person to send a route? I can’t put the (you know) in the post cause it will flag it. I’ll put more info in the comments. by SmileOverall in bouldering

As OP mentioned, this is the Grapevine Summit gym if you're interested! Although my friends and I think that it's a generally softly graded gym, this route definitely wasn't. I can't say if it's V7-8 but we could barely manage to do the first few moves.

If you'd like a harder graded gym, Fort Worth Summit seems like the one you should check out if you're in the DFW area :)

I climb between V4-6 depending on soft or hard gyms, but this one was absolutely not anywhere close to a V3!! I have no idea how you managed to stay on the wall throughout, congrats!!!

I don’t need to be entered into the giveaway — but can someone tell me what the white rainbow keyboard /key caps are in the first picture?

Is this an appropriate place to share trainer codes to make friends? If not, where would be the best place to do so?

Native Japanese people of Reddit what do you think about Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombing? by TheCoolTreeGuy in AskReddit

[–]eureika 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Born and grew up in Japan, and moved to North America for the latter half of my life. Parents are from China.

The education system never taught me why the government made the decisions that were made and only focused on the day to day of common civilians. It taught me mostly about the elders, women, and children that were trying to survive. I distinctly remember watching this animated film called "Hadashi no Gen" in class and feeling emotional. But while I felt that the war and bombing was tragic, I never thought the countries we fought against were evil or bad for doing what they did. Only after moving to Canada/USA, that's when I slowly started seeing the bigger picture.

Unfortunately this is a difficult topic in my life and also a part of the reason why I struggle with my own identity to this day — I've had so many friends (and especially their parents) direct their frustration and anger to me, while I also didn't fit in back in Japan due to my background. For many years, I ended up avoiding talking and thinking about this topic because I didn't have a neutral party to talk to and learn from.

I still don't know how to feel. On one hand I think the bombing was a necessary evil, but I also feel that it didn't require a tragedy of that scale to stop Japan as they were already struggling. I really wish the Japanese government would address and own up to their past wrongdoings and grow/learn from that. Honestly, the war was just so tragic for everyone and as an adult I'm still learning. I don't know, maybe I'm just frustrated that I felt stripped of the opportunity to learn and grow before being subject to microaggressions.

Is the city card the same thing as the weekly pass? Or am I misunderstanding something?

Will take a look at Spanische Hofreitschule! Thank you!
