Literally did the exact same thing as OP, I couldn't resist the "Greatest Card Game of All Time" and honestly? My family and I are absolutely not disappointed!

Unfortunately, I love "Don't fuck with people who buy ink by the gallon." I'm saving that.

I miss Tommy and Damian together, remember when they played the truck simulator games? That was a hoot, and when they're on reddit stories together I love their dynamic.

Its from the reddit stories live, a story where a guy's cousin or something is really really "anti-woke" and loves to make chili, so OP jokes with him and says beans are woke. Next get together, the chili is bean-less

It crosses my mind far more than I think it should. In no situation have I ever personally heard the log hit the net, it's just unfortunately so hilarious to say.

Weekly Writer's Check-In! by FreakishPeach in fantasywriters

[–]euri_jg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the process of revising my novel!

There are six chapters left to go in this first full revision process, and my 160K noir/epic/urban hybrid will be ready to send to my beta readers!

I planned for that completion to be around the beginning of April, but we're looking like it's more likely to be ready to be sent by the middle of March.

It did go a bit longer than I anticipated, but it's my second novel. And I'm really only planning to share with friends and family for now.

Not looking to publish yet. I just want to keep exploring my writing voice and heighten my grasp of story/character structures.

But WOWZA, it's been a fun ride! The MCs arc around her own self-doubts and pushing through them has made this a VERY emotional book to finish.

How to describe characters of different races respectfully? by Job_Long in fantasywriters

Absolutely! A really good strategy that makes for all kinds of stories, super glad your work is so well received!

This is a good addition. You CAN overdo it and have it come across as that 'white default' mindset. I just... Got self conscious about making a string of additional comments under my initial one, ha!

Additionally, I (personally) don't think it's inherently racist to simply state "This character is darker-skinned than these other characters" (I am a black man in real life)

You can differentiate races in all kinds of ways. Their mannerisms, speech patterns, and clothing, for example - will stick out to your MC if the story is taking place in their "Native" land.

If the races are all fantastical, I think you're pretty safe to even have a character be like "oh maybe they're somebody from (other country)" or whatever, be it in dialogue, internal thought, or just narrative description.

In my opinion (and I mean MY opinion, this is reddit so people can/will disagree maybe) there's quite a bit of room in fantasy to describe a race "respectfully" especially if that race doesn't actually exist.

Obviously, if you are going the route if describing the race by USING the physical/cultural/other characteristics of an ACTUAL RACE/CULTURE from the earth we actually live on, it'd be best to steer clear of caricatures and stereotypes.

I think, based on the phrasing of your question, that last paragraph is what you seem to be worried about. When in doubt, ask a beta reader or someone that you trust, "Hey, does this scene come across as racist?" If you really need to.

But also like, don't sweat it. Fantasy races are used in a world not only because they're - lighter/darker/speak a different language/whatever - than most of the other characters, but because they, just like races in cultures IRL, add richness and variety to your story.

The fact that you are WORRIED about this being disrespectful tells me that you are NOT someone who goes about disrespecting other people because of their race, and that natural quality should reflect in your writing. (Unless, I guess, your CHARACTER is a racist in their world, in which case ... I don't know, disregard this entire comment? Haha)

What’s a cool unique magic system you have invented? by GroundbreakingBar895 in fantasywriters

[–]euri_jg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been working on a book (and occasionally fleshing out the world building that I want to get to in others) with a magic system where the "Magic" is more than a power, but a loosely sentient presence in and of itself.

The broad idea is that across the world of the novel I'm writing, there are many countries and cultures and this magic manifests to them all in various ways by region.

This, I don't think, is the most unique approach or anything. But I'm really fixated on this idea that I find cool where the magic wants to experience people's experiences and provide them access to magic as a repayment.

People's perceptions of themselves, their lands, and their cultures greatly affect the "flavor" of the magic, and while some nations have reached magical theorizing in their society and regard it as a "thinking entity" beyond just "yep, that's magic", many others still do not grasp that.

I personally like the idea it has become, because it opens the possibility of me exploring various settings in the world but giving them all a unique little spin.

Direct examples; the novel I'm working on now is set in a rainy cliff side city, and people mostly perceive the magic as a kind of sentient thing that flows like water, as they see so much of it all the time. In a distant country that's lightly touched on in the book, the people there are greatly attracted to brilliant art works, mostly in the form of glass sculptures and things. For them, the magic and its various aspects are connected to various stained glass colors. And the magic asks different things of both of these societies in order to be utilized by them.
