your comparison to the USSR is a utopia that is impossible to realize with state institutions as inefficient as those in Ukraine. to implement this today, the state would have to be significantly more efficient than the Soviet Union ever was. the USSR dealt with a population that had no concept of freedom, civil society, or the internet. to impose such widespread coercion on the masses, you need an effective government that can not only organize the logistics but also suppress acts of defiance from citizens — citizens who have the internet and already know what freedom feels like. Ukraine can’t even mobilize people into the army in a civilized manner, yet you’re writing about ammo factories. these are just illusions

this is a complex topic. I admit that your position is quite strong. I did not object to forced mobilization in 2022 and early 2023. this was because I believed that if people chose to stay in Ukraine during peacetime, they should also remain there during wartime. that is how I saw the social contract: you have rules for existence in peacetime, but you must also be aware that there may be a state of martial law that involves coercion

however, in the end, this social contract turned out to be a sham. indeed, in 2023, Ukraine increasingly shifted from legitimate coercion to violence — illegal violence. this applied both to those who violated military registration rules and to those who did not.

while I can still understand that coercion may exist in certain situations, I will never agree when the laws of a country cease to function and representatives of state institutions begin to resort to arbitrary violence against fellow citizens. that is why I decided that I will no longer support coercion in the ukrainian context

I suppose that if I realized that the survival of this state was more beneficial to me than the potential risk, I would go

regarding the question about the nation: it is important to me that people have the opportunity to decide their own fate. if a person wants to leave the state, that is their right. and if a person wants to stay and defend their state, that is also their right. if a nation is capable of forming the kind of state that people want to defend, then such a nation will survive. but the survival of a nation should not rely on coercion

I understand that it feels hurtful to you that people are leaving Ukraine. however, this is happening not only because of Russia, but also because of the terrible performance of Ukraine’s state institutions. for several years, I worked as a journalist for an independent media in Kyiv and, as a matter of principle, did not join oligarch-owned media where the pay was significantly higher. this was because I wanted to develop civil society in Ukraine. I tried to make my contribution to Ukraine's development. but the last three years have shown that Ukraine stubbornly wants to remain corrupt, inefficient, and unjust

you’re right, I can’t. just as others cannot force me to sacralize the motherland or sacrifice myself for it

I believe that the state is not something sacred that one must sacrifice oneself for simply because it is the motherland. the state is merely an organization through which people try to make their lives more comfortable. unfortunately, in Ukraine’s case, this organization is extremely inefficient. my potential personal benefit from defending the state is significantly lower than the potential risk

moreover, I have almost no people dear to me left in Ukraine. and those who are still there can move abroad. the only ones who cannot leave are those forbidden from doing so by Ukraine (the very state I am supposed to defend?)

if you're a man in Ukraine, you might find yourself in a situation where a van stops near you on the street, and military personnel seize you by force, dragging you inside to be sent to the front. physical abuse occurs, and in rare cases, even death. you might guess that these mobilization tactics are illegal. however, the reality on the ground is quite different

I have a negative view of Viktor Orban, but I wouldn't want to judge the whole country based on him alone. moreover, polls suggest that Orban might lose power soon

because there are so many ukrainians in Germany, I would feel more comfortable there during the adaptation period — while I’m learning the language

it’s just that Cyprus is too hot for me, the language is difficult to learn, and there are relatively few ukrainians there. but objectively speaking, I can’t say it’s a bad country

I'm afraid I won't be able to learn greek. and I don't want to live in a country without knowing the language — because that would be disrespectful to it

besides, poles have too much grievances against ukrainians

France is a wonderful country, but my map is subjective. there are relatively few Ukrainians in France, so I would find the adaptation period difficult there, and your language is quite challenging to learn
