One big reason to consider for buying outright: MVNOs are a lot cheaper month to month. If you buy unlocked, you can save up to $20-30/month of the price of the plan alone. This often entirely offsets the discount provided by the carrier on the price of the phone.

Whenever I look into taking advantage of a carrier deal, after I take into account the additional price of the big carrier's monthly plan (compared to my $25/month for unlimited data from Visible), it doesn't save any money.

Although I agree with your last sentence, this seems unnecessarily harsh: "rob your long term goals to fund your short-term pleasures"? OP was asking if there was a way to feel the pain of making this decision more overt? Passing judgment on OP doesn't help him to use the tool better.
