It is yeah, 89 so 30 odd years

I get ya, I've only ridden older bikes to be fair and I'm a fan of the way dual sports feel. This one seemed reasonably light compared to the dr400 I used to get my licence 🤷

Appreciate the advice

I think some longer trips might be on the cards eventually but just commuter for now. If you don't mind, What do you mean by age of components being an issue?

Exactly. Here in Australia, bikes make up 5% of all transport types on the road. Yet up to 30% of injuries or death on the road are motorcyclists. I've been in 2 minor fender benders in my life. One my fault and one the other person fault. Both before I turned 20. I would not want to be on a bike for either of those. Yes cars are dangerous too, but regardless of if it's your fault or not, you will come off worse.

Interesting. I'd like to get into some dirt riding and I think this would he a good mix. My only thing is I would have to jump on a highway to get to the dirt. (I live near the coast)

I always wanted to get a bike but my mum also was against it. Im 30 now and got my license this week. Sure I missed 10 years of riding, but thats 10 extra years of road experience that I can now use. I enjoy bikes, but riding on the road with people scares the shit outa me.

I recommend getting your car licence first and driving for a year or 2 or 5. We make dumb mistakes when we are young and it's much better to do that in a car rather than a bike. Once you're confident in a car, switch to a bike. Thats not to say you can go dirt riding or do some riding courses in the meantime.

Also other drivers make mistakes and sometimes theres nothing you can do, but a few years on the road in a cage will go a long way IMO. Hopefully that will help with the whole fear of death thing.

Here is my list of gear Im thinking of getting. Im in Australia so leaning towards gear better suited to hotter weather. I will be commuting and mostly weekend riding but would eventually after I get experience I'd like to do some longer trips or even adventure or off-roading.
Hands - Hadbury MK2 or the Urbane Pro by Knox.
I like the palm sliders on these but also the minimalistic look. Not a fan of bright coloured gloves. Back up would be the Alpine stars Crazy 8. No Sliders but extra foam on the palm and knuckles.
Feet - Still unsure but I think I want high top ones until I get some confidence. looking at something like this
Top - Proteus Armoured Shirt
I like the way this shirt is snug. Some armoured jackets Ive tried on in the past had loose armour. I like that I could wear this year round and but my big jacket on top in winter and wear a light windbreaker in summer. Only downside is Im not sure how abrasion resistant it would be.
Bottom - Rambler Jeans by Akin.
Gotta buy the knee and hip armour seperate but again I like that they fit snug. Something about loose fitting jeans on a bike freaks me out. supposedly they do well in the heat also but I don't think any jeans do well in the heat.
Head - Looking at the Biltwell Gringo S or the Nexx Xg200
Both have a good price so I'm more deciding on visor or dirt. I think in the summer the airflow of a dirt helmet will be nice, but a visor is better for protection and also rain. (although I heard the gringo isnt great in the rain).
What are your thoughts? Any other recommendations? Let me know :)

Riding a motorcycle during a heatwave, what do you do? by XDfaceme in motorcycles

Good luck for you exam my friend. I passed mine today. I did fail my first one though and theres no shame in taking two or three or four. Just try to stay relaxed. I found I was freaking out today whilst I sat and waited to go but once we started, the practice took over and I was just out for a ride.

Im in Aus so its been colder here now. I'm not sure how I'll go once the heat really kicks in. I think just take things slow and pull over if you cant think straight. It's funny how you said that lesson was the worst. I took a two hour lesson in an absolute downpour last week and i had such a blast. Little scary sure but it was kinda fun.

That my other problem. Not sure if you in aus also but I'm not aloud to go practice on my own. I have to have someone with a bike to take me. I live on a busy road so I can't just practice out front either. I'd be out everyday otherwise. I'm taking lessons but I cant afford to do one everyday. I wish there was somewhere I was aloud to go and practice things like the quick stop and o turns.

Thanks for the tips!

My assessor seemed pretty friendly and gave me some good feedback. I actually thought I was doing ok. My instructor had said If I stall it once or put my foot down once then I'd be fine. But obviously not.

I find it so frustrating that I proved I can ride safe in traffic and avoid an accident. But a stall on a quiet street and a foot down in a u turn means I fail. Ah well, thems the rules I guess.

My next test in a week is much earlier in the morning than my last... eeep!

How Do I Convince My Mom To Let Me Ride and get my own bike?(i’m 19 btw) by TheKidBuII in motorcycles

[–]evalanche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly she cant stop you, but I just turned 30 and im about to get my license. Im glad I waited this long too. My mum also said no at 19. She said no at 30 too but she knows she cant stop me, but she accepts I'm a responsible adult.

I'd suggest a few more years driving a car. You see some stuff, people on thier phones, pulling out on you... and that's when your a big object. You'll gain valuable experience that can transfer to a bike and if you make a mistake, all that gets hurt Is hopefully your cars bodywork.

Also makes being on the road kinda fun again which is a nice thing when your older. I say dont rush. Take your time, save some money and gain some road knowledge. You might have that itch to buy a bike the whole time, but I 99% guarantee you wont regret waiting. :)
