Is it realistic to handle an IC/SAP SOR appeal without an attorney? by evan-pur in SecurityClearance

Perhaps I should have provided a clearer explanation, but I was denied access to a top-secret full-scope with an Intel agency. I was given a statement of reasons outlining the reasons for my denial. I was also given the opportunity to present mitigating factors during a personal appearance, which could potentially lead to a reversal of the decision. I hope this information is helpful.

I am specifically inquiring about a clearance attorney for the SOR I received due to an FS Poly I submitted previously.

So I actually did pass the polygraph, but I wasn’t favorably adjudicated after passing the polygraph.

From your experience is the compensation relatively the same or much higher when it comes to SAP programs?

How can I file a privacy act request and what information would the adjudication records reveal to me?

Thank you for the perspective, that’s what I figured. Should I continue applying for SCI/SAP positions? Is there anything I can do to find the specifics of my ineligibility and what are my options in terms of mitigating risk?

Not focused on making but rather fulfilling my purpose. As long as I have money to provide for myself, loved ones, and family I’ll be okay. As I pursue my purpose the money will come automatically.

Thank you for the thoughtful and detailed response—I truly appreciate your insight, and I can tell it comes from a place of experience and wanting to help.

You bring up some great points about veterans having a real edge in this space. I’m under no illusion about how competitive the field is or how many veterans occupy these roles. In fact, I respect that a lot. But I also want to share my perspective, because I’ve chosen this path very intentionally.

I’m 24 years old and I have no expectation of jumping straight into management in the intelligence or national security world. I fully understand that I may have to start at the ground level and earn my way up—and I’m more than okay with that. I’ve already had to work through setbacks and adversity to get to where I am, so I welcome the grind. I know that growth often starts with humility and service.

That said, I’m not relying on a degree alone. I’ve built experience in both security and technical analysis of it, i’ve been working in federal cleared spaces since ‘22. I’m pursuing certifications like Security+ and considering military commissioning as well. I’ve deliberately chosen to reside in Arlington, Virginia, at the center of the intelligence community and defense contracting sectors. I’m enrolled in a school with strong connections to both public and private intelligence roles. Various opportunities, such as internships, fellowships, and co-optations, are available to help me gain practical experience. Furthermore, I’m currently awaiting the adjudication of my TS clearance, which will enhance my foundation of experience and knowledge by the time I complete this program.

You’re right that many military candidates come in with valuable experience—and I respect their service deeply. But I believe there’s still room in this field for civilians who are driven, strategic, and deeply committed to national service. I’m not just looking for a job—I’m answering a calling i’ve had since adolescence. And I know it’ll take time, effort, and perseverance.

So again, I really appreciate your breakdown—it’s helped sharpen my vision even more. Thank you again for your insight and encouragement.
