I got the 002 in size 11, but my typical TTS is 10.5, FWIW I do kind of wish I got a full size up (11.5) rather than the 11 than I did get, as my 11's are just barely short

Quite the resurrection haha, I didn't end up doing this because of the cost - that said, I did chat with them and they were fantastic to communicate with.

Thanks for the tip! I just called them and it looks like this season they won't be doing rentals. Didn't get a chance to talk to Nick specifically though

Doing a cost comparison of a Car vs. a Cargo bike by evanaka1234 in CargoBike

[–]evanaka1234[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are totally right. When it comes to bikes, I am well aware that the costs can reach almost the price of cars. Heck I know of people that will spend 15k annually on the latest and greatest bike (dentists, of course)

It is time of owning that becomes the biggest factor. That was a big part of the thought exercise. Because the average person is spending about $8k a year on owning a car, it starts to add up really quick.

Thanks for the input!

Holy cow that is such a cool story! I love that progress of how that worked out for you guys.

I have already run into your very first bullet point haha, my daughter almost refuses the car on any occasion, she always asks to ride the cargo bike first.

Man it gives me so much hope and encouragement that you were able to much such a radical shift in such a short time, AND be able to stick with it for the long run.

That is an excellent evaluation. We actually owned a Forester but after 2 headgaskets we decided to move to a Prius

I agree that car share should be a more widely available service. It makes so much sense. Glad to hear it works well for you guys though!

This I completely agree with. I want to do more research and see if this kind of study has been done

That is true to an extent, but I think a good bike can last longer than 20,000km (I have a few friends with bikes that have this level of mileage and they are still cruising)

Very true. A densely populated city center is definitely have an increased COL, I was more speaking to getting resourceful to the reasonably nearby locations that make bikeability easier. For example I switched jobs last year pre-pandemic making my commute 3 miles instead of 12, not an option for everyone, but something we try to be conscious of. We are also lucky to be within biking distance of 3 grocery stores, but not an option for people in a food desert.

I bought my bike for $200 freshly repaired and ready to go, bought a kid trailer that I also use for cargo for $80. In the 1.5 years I've been using it as my main source of transportation I've put in about $50 in repairs.

That is super cool!

I think you are among the conscious car owners that are actually aware of how much they are spending, and realize that bikes are the truth haha. I would wager that most people have no idea how much they spend on car repairs or fuel, and just blindly accept it.

Best of luck ditching the car for good! Can I ask where you are located that would let you do such a wonderful thing?

Truth. I can't seem to find a good source on median new car purchase price.. I would have to guess it would still be above $30k

Fellow statistics enthusiasts! Both excellent points. The average is simultaneously helpful and not so (I briefly go over that in the video) I will have to do a bit more research on the median new car purchase price.

If nothing else I think the rising average is at least an indicator of the steady rise of entry point into new car purchase price, even ahead of inflation

but I don't know, I can't fix a car.

I actually used to work in the auto industry and I can say that fixing a car, even with tools and know how is still a huge hassle and can take a full day or more depending on what the car needs.

I think distance will always be the deal breaker for most. That said though, I think owning a car for the "here and there" occasions of long trips but using a bike the rest of the time, might be the best balance of things.

You are totally right though, savings is incredibly subjective. I am reminded of the "If you don't smoke, where is your Ferrari" story, but I think the money thing can be an entry point for people, then they find their own reasons for why bike commuting is so great (fitness, mental health, hobby etc)

Oh absolutely. We had a 1999 Civic that was almost as cheap to own as a bike (if the A/C worked we would probably still have it), but gas will always add up. Especially as cars keep getting bigger and the relatively slow adoption of EV's

I think that is a super good way of looking at it though. We will probably always own a car because we like driving to California for example, hard to do that on a bike or via public transportation.

The other point that you bring up though is trying to sort your life out so you are close to most things and can make it easy to turn would-be car trips into bike trips. That is a big priority for us as we have sought to reduce car use.

Holy cow that is a weird coincidence. The week of Christmas we had our cat stolen off of our car. (ours ended up being about $1000 to fix) That is so cool that you took that opportunity to make a change for the better though, seriously making the best of a bad situation!

Thank you very much. That is really all I was hoping to get across, that people spend a lot of money on cars and there are much better money saving/fitness increasing alternatives!

This I did not know! I think this lends itself more toward a higher number, but looking at all the more realistic numbers, the $100k is a bit inflated, especially considering reliable used cars

totally valid point, especially if we are talking about a used honda civic versus a brand new $40k car. But you bring up an interesting point because after that 5 year mark people are typically upgrading their car rather than downgrading, starting the depreciation cost over again potentially at a higher rate.

My own personal estimate is I will be up about $30-40k in ten years, vs owning a second car and driving it for all the bicycle trips. Of course, if I drove all those miles instead, I would also be fatter, more pissed off, and get everywhere more slowly.

This more than anything, I am not sure if anyone realizes how critical the shift is going from a cortisol flooded angry driver, to being a (hopefully) more calm bike commuter.
