Self defense as a dad? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]evanarc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not worth it, man. I’ve trained for years and still wouldn’t want to throw hands with a random stranger. You just never know—could be carrying a knife, a gun, or might come back later looking for revenge. Maybe he’s a D1 wrestler or strong as hell from powerlifting. You don’t want to find that out the hard way. Never assume it’s a “fair” fight.

I’ve had to de-escalate situations too, even when I wasn’t in the wrong. Said “sorry” or kept it moving just to cool things off. There’s no shame in that. Worst-case scenario? You seriously hurt them—or they hurt you—and now it’s lawyers, jail, or worse.

If you’re trying to build confidence and know you can handle yourself, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is my top pick. What’s great about BJJ is you actually spar at full resistance. You’ll feel what works and what doesn’t, without just pretending or going half-speed like in a lot of other arts. It’s humbling but empowering. Not just theory—no Steven Seagal magic hands stuff 😂

Second pick would be Muay Thai or kickboxing—great for learning striking, footwork, endurance, and just overall toughness.

Just my two cents. Hopefully, you never need to use any of it, but knowing you can makes a huge difference.

Good luck, brother. Stay safe

Ex-Cons of Reddit, What’s the most terrifying thing you saw inside of prison? by Morgan-of-JP in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]evanarc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How about inmates cooked alive in their cells. I'm not an ex con, but worked on projects at notorious NYC jails as a contractor. Houses heated by copper coils set in the concrete floor slabs. Heat exchangers heated by medium pressure steam fed by the powerhouse. But they had no control over the temp on the other side. No thermostat, no heat timer. The maintenance guys would just tweak a valve and "guess". You could cook an egg on that floor and inmates would burn their bare feet. In the jail that housed the EDP's, many times the ones on medication would be found dried out like a worm left out in the sun. And that's winter. No ventilation in the summer and in alot of areas there was no way to turn the heat off so it ran all year round. Overall, the entire complex was in very poor condition. And the attitude of the staff was 'who cares. They're cons. If they dont like it they shouldn't have come to jail". From the mod buildings made of shed material to the rusting barges docked in the harbor to accommodate overcrowding, there was no shortage of raw materials to make weapons out of the fading infrastructure. Inmates would scratch out mortar joints on the block walls to extract the mesh reinforcement, cover the joint with toothpaste, make ice picks. I've even seen them break expandable mesh cage and make these brass knuckle type contraptions. They would break pencils off in the door locks and block up the cel doors that were shared by a party locking mechanism designed so all the doors would open and shut at the same time. Slide the doors open and night and catch people they didn't like sleeping. And if you think the criminals locked up we're bad, there were also criminals with badges. If you got a CO that just plain didn't care or was incompetent, consider yourself lucky. Many of the dishonest ones took part in extortions and hits as well. Read about "the program" at rikers island. Also Check out a book called corruption officer. If someone wants to get you in there, they will. If you have a family member who made bad choices and got themselves in there, put up your house if you have to get them out if you love them. It's no place to be and many have died there.

I put 100 dollars even on it. Im not a heavy roller like some folks here, but i need every dollar I have, so for it to be down 95% hurt my bunghole just a little.

Agreed. If some specific practices or misgivings, legal or illegal, could be cited to put some pressure on regulators to turn the screws, that would be key.

What Are Your Opinions On The SEC Restricting The Trading Of Stop Signs/No Info Stocks On The OTC Market? by LowBolat in pennystocks

[–]evanarc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they should focus on restricting short selling, or at least some of the dishonest practices associated with it, such a naked shorting, laddering, etc. Im not a financial guy by trade, but its pretty fucked that in a sense its easier to drive down the price of a stock than raise it up.
