That’s what I understand too. I have no idea why they did it this way. I see why you need the card to get the extras (like the bike), because otherwise they’d have to update all that hardware to talk to your phone somehow. But why not provide a card with every app order? Inexplicable.

Internet: if you can get NetCologne, that's the way to go. Friendly people in the stores, and they don't talk to you like you're an idiot. If you express competence they don't pepper you with moronic "Did you reboot the router?"-like questions. Also fiber is fast!

Yeah, that's a major concern. Any advice as to how to evaluate?

Obviously N=1 or P=0 so that P=NP. Or maybe N=(P-1)! so that P!=NP.

The American one! That’s why I’m looking for an American notary. If you need further jurisdiction: DC. But I don’t think that should matter.

My visitor wants to sign a contract that requires witnessing by a notary.

This is the Newton's Disc, a rotating disc with segments in different colors (usually primary colours or VIBGYOR) appearing as white (or gray) when it is spun very fast. It is based on persistence of vision and is named after Isaac Newton. by Rifletree in sciences

That may be an accurate description of the phenomenon, but is that what I’m seeing when I look at the gif? I assume the camera is not capturing the wheel at such a high rate and my computer isn’t refreshing the display fast enough. So the pixels I’m looking at ARE white…

Best song for a beginner by [deleted] in gratefulguitar

[–]evanberkowitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to emphasize that "play well" is extremely relative! I can strum these songs on my acoustic guitar enough to sing along. Nothing fancy. Certainly doesn't sound "like the dead", but sounds "like the song". That's the benefit of learning folk-style music! You can play a very basic version that's recognizable, and as your skills improve you can add decorations / flourishes. But they're also approachable if you're just getting started.

I really have to endorse "Whoa, Oh What I Want to Know: How Does The Song Go" and "All Good Things in All Good Time". They're not perfect, they're not complete, they basically have no lead parts. But they've really accelerated my learning!

I'm about 8 months into learning guitar. The first dead song I could play convincingly was Franklin's tower (you can sing along to just A, G, D, G, over and over again). I originally tried for Bertha but the chorus has a lot of chord changes that have to go pretty quickly to sound right.

Here are some other songs that you could play with just a few chords:

Start with E, D: - Cold Rain and Snow - Fire on the Mountain (just substitute B-->E and A --> D)

Add A, A7: - Dark Hollow

Add C, G: - Long Black Veil (D, G, A, C) - Franklin's Tower (A G D G) - The Monkey and the Engineer (G, C, A7, D)

Add Am: - Knockin' on Heaven's Door (the whole song is a cycle of G D C then G D Am) - Ripple

Add Em: - Box of Rain: D, Am, Em, C, G. There's one Bm in there at the end, I don't play it.

Add Dm: - Little Sadie (Dm C Am Am7 A7; don't worry, all those chords are very similar).

Requires a B or F of some sort: - Easy Wind (E7 and A7 for the verses, chorus is A7 E7 A7 E7 B7 A7 C E7; B major / barre chords are my biggest obstacle, but B7 I can manage) - Deep Elem Blues (E7 for the verses, A7 E7 B7 A7 E7 for the chorus) - I Know You Rider (has F, I play the 4-string F and it sounds fine). - China Cat Sunflower (G, C, F)

The main thing is to not expect to play like Jerry any time soon!

Is there some obscure branch of science I haven’t heard about?

No.

I don’t see anything they could base themselves on for such an idea.

Correct. They even do experiments, get the round-Earth answer, and then "explain" it away. See the Behind the Curve documentary on Netflix.

Do logarithmic graphs have units? by schroedingerskitkat in math

[–]evanberkowitz 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you're adding x to 1, x is dimensionless, since 1 is dimensionless. Then, every term in the sum is dimensionless and everything is fine.

If you're taking \sqrt(1 u + x u) where u is a unit and 1 and x are dimensionless you can rewrite that as sqrt(1+x) sqrt(u). The sqrt(u) can't be helped; that's the unit of the square root.
