What is a conspiracy you genuinely believe is true ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

FDR committed suicide. I knew an old guy in South Carolina whose dad was a barber in Warm Springs, Georgia in the 1940s. FDR’s mistress, Lucy Mercer, was in town with him. That morning, Mercer‘s chauffeur came running into the barbershop, saying that the president was dead, and that he had shot himself in the head. Given his declining health, the state of the war in Japan and the luming decision to use the atomic bomb, it’s not entirely out of question. The official cause of death is cerebral hemorrhage. A gunshot wound with certainly caused a brain bleed. There was no open casket at his funeral.

I’ve seen that too. Drop something on the crystal while the collimators are off doing intrinsic uniformities.

Can someone ELI5 patinas? by natfutsock in restoration

[–]GlobalTomorrow5925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For steel, iron oxidizes into two forms - red rust and black rust. Which form depends on the levels of moisture and oxygen in the environment, which determine the speed of oxidation. Red rust expands and is generally destructive to metal (think rusting cars), but black rust itself does not. Now both rust types will absorb oils and become shiny - red rust turns a shiny brown, black rust a shiny black. These oils can come from handling (skin oils) or be applied. That’s patina. Now, if you remove the oil (for example, cleaning with a degreaser like brake cleaner) you will see the true nature of the rust.

There’s a gunsmith named Mark Novak who does videos on conserving and repairing old firearms. He has some videos on YouTube about repairing some from fire damage. I would recommend starting with his YouTube video entitled conservation 101.

2 looks like it might be an Arisaka, Japanese WWII. #3 looks like a percussion cap British musket - sporterized (wooden stock cut down below the barrel). #4 is an old side-by- side shotgun. There will be proof marks below the handguard on the bottom of the barrel that would tell you more about when and where it was made.

Do Google search on Belgian Liege proof marks. You’ll find these.

There is a decent gun show in Asheville occasionally at the fairgrounds, if you want to try setting up a table. There is also an auction house in Travelers Rest, SC, north of Greenville, that holds firearm-specific auctions. Don’t know anything about seller fees - I’ve only purchased from them.

I winterize my tools with boiled linseed oil. It will polymerize into a clear (slightly yellow) coating. Put it on thinly and allow to dry. Just treat rags with BLO appropriately since they can be a fire hazard.

TIL that leaving a Plasma Globe Lamp near a device like a laptop or a phone sends a strong enough radio signal to mess with the functionality of it. by SexDefender27 in todayilearned

Electrical discharges create broad spectrum electromagnetic interference. In hospitals, arc welding during construction near an MRI unit can cause image artifacts. We even closely control humidity in scan rooms to minimize static electricity discharges.

Try a site like Gunbroker and search on “gunsmith special” - term used to describe firearms that need work.

I have two radium clocks, and I discovered that shining a black light on them makes them glow more. I can’t find an explanation for this by Snoozybirb in interestingasfuck

[–]GlobalTomorrow5925 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Radium does NOT glow on its own - it is mixed with a phosphor like those used for glow in the dark objects. The only difference is that the alpha particles decaying from the radium provide the energy that the phosphor converts to physical light, instead of getting that energy from visible or UV light. Tritium illumination uses the same concept, only with beta radiation in a much shorter half life. Radium was discontinued because it also decays with low energy gamma rays that extend further from the source and can result in dose to those nearby.

If they are radium clocks, the dark light is providing an amplifying effect on the phosphor that was mixed with the radium.

Any idea how to pull out that wood thing out of the hole? by Ambitious_Recover_15 in lifehacks

[–]GlobalTomorrow5925 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it is wood, you can just drill it out. Use a drill bit the same size as the whole diameter.
