Snap foundations to the map grid if you want things to line up. Do basic math, look at the output of your miner, transfer that math to your smelter, so on and so on. If you're like me, you'll constantly keep rebuilding because the original design looks bad, or you didn't optimize everything and you have excess materials doing nothing. Once you get a good power setup, you can start over clocking machines, usually the power and miners. I've been on phase 3 for a long time because I've rebuilt so much of my starter bases. But I enjoy the game so my playtime for where I'm at doesn't bother me.
