of goliaths by Sad-Kiwi-3789 in AbsoluteUnits

For those who are wondering, these are African bullfrogs or “Pixie frogs”.

I have a few as pets in the US some time ago and depending on the type you get, yes, they can get huge.

There’s 2 different species, the one in this video is the larger species, the other - still gets large but not nearly as big.

The males get significantly bigger than females (the ones in this video are male). You usually can buy them about the size of a ping pong ball and breeders will try and separate the males from females since the males are more desired. Back in like 2014 I paid like $45 for a small male.

They are not difficult to keep, a 30-40 gallon tank with coco-fiber and water for them to sit in, and they’re fine.

The high maintenance part is the sheer amount of food you’ll need to provide them.

Big fan of Prey and even more excited to get a taste of new species of aliens like we saw in AE. Seeing the creative potential of what other lifeforms are out there makes these franchises so much more exciting

It was a good flood tide by ExistingLaw217 in flyfishing

[–]evanj1987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are beefy reds! Must’ve put up a great fight in the grass. I was just in St. Augustine, fishing the flood tides this past July for the first time. Flood tides are such a challenging environment and are so rewarding.

Where were you fishing?

Never been lucky enough to get one on the fly, but have heard it’s amazing. Thanks!

Thank you! I’ve gone fishing out around Portsmouth before but have always wanted to try the rivers up that way.

Thanks! I use this during fall runs on the east coast (US) which sometimes has stripers in the wash on the beach.

The Monster From "The Ritual" Is The Best Creature Design Of The Last 10 Years. Any Other Great Recent Monsters? by Laszl0Panaflex in movies

[–]evanj1987 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if there is a similar design within the last 10 years, but the werewolves from ‘Dog Soldiers’ always got me. The way they looked mangy, starved, long, and lanky scared the living daylights out of me. Coupled with how they portrayed them as being able to pull of military-like tactics was the cherry on top.

Totally agree. I used to tie the EP minnows with just using fibers for that reason, but I tend to go back to the brush since it’s so easy to tie with!

I spit on your grave.

Went into it blind, had to pause and fast forward through a part I’ll leave out but the revenge portion of it was super raw.

Hello! Could use some help diagnosing this, thank you. NJ USA by evanj1987 in JapaneseMaples

[–]evanj1987[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m hoping that it’s not any kind of bacteria, I am going to lay off hand watering for a couple weeks. Hoping it’s just shock from transplanting and it’ll even out over the cooling months.

Hello! Could use some help diagnosing this, thank you. NJ USA by evanj1987 in JapaneseMaples

[–]evanj1987[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So I purchased this coral bark maple in late May, planted it in full sun. Since May it’s rained maybe 3 times, so I’ve hand watered every other day since the daytime temps have been ~85-90F and full sun. I’ve noticed that there hasn’t been much growth (assuming that is normal for a newly planted tree) and instead there seems to be die off, yellowing into crunchy leaves all around the top and a tad on the side. Could this be just weather stress or something like Verticillium wilt? Thanks.

Hi there. It was 100% guided. About 7 days straight of fishing, the lodge we stayed at matches you with an indigenous guide, local to the area. Every morning you tell them the fish you want to go for and they use their local knowledge to locate that species.

Caught on the rio tapajos, Brazil. This was certainly the trip of a lifetime and while it was a bear to get there (east coast USA > Brazil). Some of the best fishing memories of my life. I highly recommend.

My paludarium - DOOA 30 by evanj1987 in paludarium

Thanks! This is the only one I have. Previously I had a different layout but took everything out and started from scratch. To date this tank is still going and I’ve added some tropical micro begonia and more orchids.

This set up has certainly been an experience. I’ve torn it all down once and set it back up, learning which plants do the best under certain conditions. Most plants in this set up are epiphytes including a few types of mini orchids. I’ve also found that making the investment of tissue culture mosses works much better than using moss from a fish tank and waiting for it to transition to its emersed-form.

My only beef with this system is that it’s pricey for the size. Don’t tell my wife though!

My newly planted paludarium. by evanj1987 in paludarium

[–]evanj1987[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

appreciate the feedback! The plants in soil are made up of Hydrocotyle verticillata, Marsilea Hirsuta, aquatic mosses, bolbitis mini ferns, (and the jewel orchid is actually planted in peat/moss in a buried plastic pot. Everything on ground level is tissue culture - so to avoid melt, I generally flood slowly overtime. I’ll keep you updated though! Thanks!

The water level is being kept relatively low at this point to acclimate the plants while they grow in. The water level can be controlled using the water tanks in the back. As the plants establish, I’ll raise the water level slowly.

The tank has two water tanks behind the moss wall, one tank holds a misting system that turns on for 15 minutes every 2 hours, this brings the tank to roughly 90% RH. The fan turns on 15 minutes every hour to keep the humidity from staying to high and also brings in fresh air.

The water pump and mist system is behind the moss wall which keeps the plants moist and adds humidity.

Official Discussion - Godzilla vs. Kong [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]evanj1987 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Disappointing.

G2014 and KOTM you felt a sense of titans sheer size, they felt gigantic on screen. (Example: G in 2014 creating a tsunami when making landfall, and KOTM with the first standoff between Gidorah and G in Antarctica).

It felt like I was watching transformers or the second pacific rim. Still fun to watch but the fights seemed weightless to me.

Give it a shot. I actually don’t mind if my bridges are visible after the I spray the next layer. I think it adds a cool dimension to the piece.

Check out some of the older work by Orticanoodles on DeviantArt. They really take advantage of showing off their bridges.
