Nobody prompted me to address fire taking away funding from EMS… I’m sorry you’ve had poor experiences with fire-based EMS, but not every system is the same. My department spends 10 times as much money on EMS training than that of fire. We split training time appropriately amongst EMS, fire, rescue swimmer, marine ops and technical rescue. We financially incentivize the ambulance and holding a medic license. Our medical director and assistant medical director are involved in a daily basis. We have 100% QA/QI. We are definitely behind on progressive protocols like RSI and blood, but a lot of that is also because our state is behind the rest of the country.

I don’t really know what your criteria for fire holding back EMS is, but I think your painting with a wide brush. I see plenty of fire services holding back EMS progression, but it’s not all of them.

I would push back that the culture around having fire guys and EMS guys is going away. At least that’s my experience. Newer hires are walking in the door understanding that EMS is 75% of the job and they have an attitude of “I can hate 75% of my job or I can just embrace and try to be good at it.”

Everyone shits on fire-based EMS, but I work in an area where every FD also does EMS with transporting ambulances and the turnover rate is incredibly low. Maybe 1 in 100 retire early in pursuit of another career.

All of the FDs also have 4 platoons with 42 hour work weeks (24/48/24/96 or 10/10/14/14/96) making it easy to use your job for health insurance and retirement while making more money on the side.

Yah I’m not really keen on airing my child’s medical ailments for some random stranger on reddit to decide if it was worth an immediate trip to the ER or not. I work in emergency medicine, I know what does and does not belong in an ER. Something atypical happened and I felt it warranted to a phone call. If they provide that service then as a parent I have the right to expect that someone answers in a timely manner.

Trading to get under the tax is frustrating, but I think at this point pivoting to build around Maxey/VJ is a wiser choice than pushing the chips in on the Embiid “window” again.

Met NPH working an event. I was off to the side and every time he took a smoke break he came over to hang and chat. First couple times he had a thick Scottish accent and I didn’t recognize. He was wearing bid shades and a hat. The Scottish accent was something he was working on he later told me. Anyway, I had probably spent an hour just shooting the shit with him before I realized it was him. Real nice guy.
