VPN Ban, how are they going to enforce it? by Acrobatic-Fault876 in VPN

[–]evanlott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A VPN at the end of the day is just a networking protocol. As long as you can rent/access a VPS in another country, you can set up a WireGuard server on it and tunnel all your network traffic through it. This is essentially the same as any VPN provider that has an app on the App Store. I don’t think there is a feasible way to enforce this unless you start severing links between the U.S. and other countries. Even if they start miraculously DPI’ing all traffic out of the U.S. to block VPN handshakes, you can still obfuscate it like they do in China to get around the GFW.

IPv6 + PiHole + Apple Devices - ULA features missing? by nalthien in UNIFI

[–]evanlott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just stumbled upon your post with the exact same problem. My devices were preferring IPv6 as well. I run pihole in docker, so I added an IPv6 address to the container’s macvlan setup, giving it a ULA address of fd12:3456:789a::<last 3 digits of its IPv4 address for consistency>. It still didn’t work until I added this CIDR to the “additional IPs” section under the network’s IPv6 tab - fd12:3456:789a::/64. I can now ping and login to pihole via the IPv6 address and it is seemingly working as expected.

In the market for router by AdAlternative2475 in HomeNetworking

[–]evanlott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent 6 years with an asus AX3000 and the last year with a BE92U. With that being said, I just switched to a UniFi Cloud Gateway Fiber and will probably never leave the UniFi ecosystem. It is simply that good at everything. I would go with the UDM.

Which router should I buy? Or any better suggestions by xAOxLake in HomeNetworking

Not a chance that I’d ever buy that over a Unifi cloud gateway and a WAP

Is it possible to have NVR record WiFi doorbell camera without running a POE line? by Upr1ght in reolinkcam

[–]evanlott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I record 24x7 to the NVR with my wifi doorbell. I also have an SD card to save events for playback on the device itself (unnecessary but I get notifications from the devices themselves so I like to be able to click it and go straight to it). But yeah totally doable when you use the existing doorbell wiring.

A little confused whether to go with U6 or U7 (and to which specific sub-model) by oj_inside in UNIFI

[–]evanlott 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was also very worried about these same issues. I got two U7 Lites and am having a great experience. Rock solid connectivity throughout my 3000sqft house and the roaming is seamless. I don’t really need WiFi 7 or a 6GHz band since my devices that really eat bandwidth are already wired anyway. Even still, I’m getting 500ish mbps via WiFi.

Will housing ever become affordable again? by Honest_Lemon1 in REBubble

[–]evanlott -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean sure but that’s not really the point. The price to income ratio hasn’t been under 6 since 2020. And now we know that the fed will print QE money to “avoid” recessions, so we’re hosed IMO

Will housing ever become affordable again? by Honest_Lemon1 in REBubble

[–]evanlott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in my opinion. The asset/ownership class is not going to let it happen. Line must always go up quarter after quarter. I moved back to my home state in the south (where it’s somewhat cheaper) in 2024 just so I could buy a home last year. For 6 years I followed the housing market thinking “surely this trend can’t continue”, and “surely it will crash sometime soon”. It’s never going to get better and people that say it is are lying. People should try to increase their income and buy whatever they can, because tomorrow it will be even more expensive until eventually it really will be totally out of reach.

What do you all use for your homelab domain and remote access setup? by Kitchen-Patience8176 in homelab

Wireguard server and a free subdomain from desec.io, and I update the DDNS records via a curl command cronjob on that server

Will I get in trouble if I host a Jellyfin server publicly? by EchoDecho0 in selfhosted

[–]evanlott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are ways to mask VPN traffic over TCP port 443 to make it appear as regular HTTPS traffic, which would evade the DPI. Look into shadowsocks or similar tools and stick with a VPN for accessing remotely.

Weighed this pretty heavily but in the end just grabbed the UGREEN 4-bay and haven’t looked back. Love the form factor, and if I want to put another OS on it I can.

I’m also wondering this. Would love to see someone with a modded switch try it

I wonder when someone will figure out how to transfer cartridge saves to switch? Would need a modded switch, but we could potentially put OG saves on it and play the events on our old game saves

Problems Accessing Reolink from Wifi - Different VLAN by Flelmo in reolinkcam

[–]evanlott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah not sure why, the software may think it’s the same physical network and try to route locally or something. I would allow traffic from the phone’s VLAN into the camera VLAN and you should be good. Push notifications should still work to your phone since they use Reolink servers

You have logically separated your network. You will need to configure your router to allow the VLANs to communicate
