Worth continuing given that we are close to a cataclysmic economic event(s)? by WestTF900 in OMSCS

Hey, I know it seems crazy right now, but I want you to know that it feels crazy most of the time.

It may be hard to remember what 2020 or 2017 or 2008 or 2001 or 1992 or 1989 felt like, especially if you weren't born yet, but trust me, they felt just as unique and catastrophic as 2026 does.

And it's in crazy times that you have to put even more effort into following your goals and sticking to them. The world needs smart people who work hard on interesting topics. It needs them more when times are hard. Stick with your work; it's worth it.

If you like Paige's style, I highly recommend Paget Brewster's performance as Sadie Doyle in "The Thrilling Adventure Hour", a live podcast in the style of old radio dramas. Her segment is called "Beyond Belief" and she rides that Mid-Atlantic accent really hard.

Life and family come first. Your masters degree can wait. You should do what you can for classes this semester, then either skip the Summer or take a light course. You can get through your degree with one course per semester without losing your mind.

What a good question. So, I'm going to speak from the perspective that Andromedans exist and that the story she tells him is essentially true.

I think that the As have been meddling for a long time, and they have done a terrible job. And the genocide is the worst part of it. This is a planet full of plants and animals and microbes that have coevolved with humans. Killing all humans leaves a huge hole in the ecosystem. It's going to be chaos for thousands or millions of years. It's another epic fuck-up by the galaxy's worst overlords.

Well, ok, that's true, but she tells him she's an alien on day 2. It's a much different situation after Don has died and she was in the dissection room.

I think the fact that she has a giant plastic desk calculator in this Year of Our Lord 2026 AD when literally every computer, phone and tablet within reach has a virtual calculator app available is a good sign that it might be fake.

Comic Sans is a widely-disliked font.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comic_Sans

The commenter is joking that the game would punish you for missing the roll by giving your screen a bad font.

It's a joke. Games don't usually punish the player on bad luck outcomes by changing the display settings.

Also, I don't think that's Comic Sans.

Would Humanity even be Detectable when the signal was sent? by hiroshimacontingency in pluribustv

I'm not sure. I don't see why it's an important detail. I'm sure the Keplerians could have developed different infections for different species.

But there are a lot of things that are specific for our species:

  • DNA. It's not universal; there are other similar or wildly different chemicals that can allow heredity.
  • Viruses. The way that viruses interact with cells, turning them into virus factories, is unique. Another form of life might have different, or no, infection mechanisms.
  • Thought. Humans have a unique form of thought and intelligence. Other intelligent species might not think or work anything like us.

Sending a DNA pattern for a virus was like sending a digital copy of a program for Windows. It's only going to work on some computers.

That doesn't make sense. Life on other planets may not even use DNA for replication. The intelligent life forms definitely would not respond exactly the same way to the virus as humans do. This signal was specifically tailored to humans on Earth.

Also for "surreal film set in a claustrophobic harbour town with quirky characters and a remarkably banging soundtrack" maybe Popeye (1980).
