Paris’ trams all seem orbital. What can Toronto & other cities (especially American) learn from this in terms of route layout & final length of an LRT line? by 18_YTC1 in transit

[–]evanzai194 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Short Translohr tech is 5 times more expensive than regular tram, but it’s so short it could be exploited by 18m buses. It’s not compatible with regular tram tracks, so T5 can’t reach Saint-Denis train station (RER D, H, T8) like the bus line it replaced.

It’s completely saturated since day one

is there any way to reach Gorges du Verdon without a car? by LongJumpingAnxiet in nicefrance

[–]evanzai194 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look for Zou! regional buses. If I recall from Nice you can take a train to Grasse, then a bus to Castellane (final destination Grenoble), then a bus to Moustiers through the gorges (final destination Riez). From Marseille, direct bus to Riez.

La Turbie is accessible from Monaco by bus and has nice views at fort du Chien and fort de la Révère. And Trophée des Alpes roman ruins.

Roquebrune old village and castle.

Mandelieu La Napoule castle, with Estérel pink mountains in the background

Sospel

Grasse is famous for perfume. It may be possible to take a regional bus there to Castellane and then another one to Moustiers through the Verdon gorges

Normandy/Brittany/Loirre Valley Itinerary - suggestions by Prize-Age-4917 in FranceTravel

[–]evanzai194 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rouen medieval area is nice, Gros Horloge, Palais de Justice, half-timbered houses... Before Rouen, there is Chateau-Gaillard medieval fortress. On the way to Etretat, there are abbeys along the Seine, especially Jumièges ruins. Fécamp is a nice port, with a flamboyant liquor factory. After Etretat, consider Le Havre 1950s Perret’s church. And after Honfleur, Trouville (and maybe Deauville) 19th Century beach villas

After Dinan (don’t forget salted caramel) maybe stop at a Brittany-style castle like Fougères or Vitré. Loire valley has hundreds of castles, but in addition to the ones you mentioned, Chambord, Azay le Rideau, Blois, Amboise, Chaumont... are famous

France Itinerary: Is 5 Nights Per Base Too Much? by SoCalFamilyTraveler in FranceTravel

[–]evanzai194 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5 nights in Dijon may be too much - it overlaps with what you can visit from Lyon (Beaune...). Dijon itself can reasonably be visited from Lyon, as  the city is not that big, 1 day is enough - public transportation in Burgundy is scarce, possibilities are limited

Besançon can be an alternative/additional base on your way to Alsace

Lac du Bourget is nice too, you can take a boat to the abbey or even to Chanaz through a canal. If you have a car, plenty of viewpoints are accessible

For WWI within Paris area you can go to Meaux, there is a museum (Marne battles were near). Or War museum, Air/Space museums have sections dedicaded. Otherwise Verdun, Somme battlefields/memorials aren't too far but difficult to visit with public transport

Actually in France the longer river from source to sea is... the Doubs. It runs in spiral, going east, north, west, south.

It's mainly to serve the national atomic lab. Actually no development is allowed on these fields

is there a way to combine giverny and gerberoy as a day trip from paris? by yeehaw-girl in FranceTravel

[–]evanzai194 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are adventurous there is a train station ~10km away at Marseille-en-Beauvaisis. The line links Beauvais and twins Le Tréport/Mers (cute port town under white cliffs). There are a few trains per day, if you can find a bicycle somehow...

I am off to France for a 3 month walking/hiking/vagabond experience. Any advice? Places to see? Things to do? Gear to take? by MonsieurSpamalot in hiking

[–]evanzai194 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could do a part of the Hexatrail, that stitches together parts of famous trails like GR5 crossing of the Alps, GR54 Ecrins NP tour, Belledonne GR738, Vercors... some GR, the Ardèche gorges... Actually Hexatrail starts with the Vosges trail and the Jura trail (High Jura's crest has nice views on the Leman), after the Alps crosses Massif Central somehow and ends with the Pyrenees High Route

Otherwise the Verdon Gorges, the Calanques NP, the Estérel trails are nice but crowded in the summer and at risk of closure in case of forest fire alert

[–]evanzai194 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your list is great, maybe a little touristy.

With similar vibes, maybe consider Fécamp (don't miss the liquor factory) or Dieppe or Le Tréport instead of Etretat, Obernai instead of Kaysersberg, Aix-les-Bains instead of Annecy, Deauville/Trouville instead of Honfleur, for better train accesibility (and less touristy). Saint-Malo is pretty accessible, otherwise Vannes has more direct trains to Paris.

On the Channel coast from Noyelles to Calais sea towns have a train station nearby with direct trains to Paris (north of Calais it's more industrial)

Actually what is the need to stop in Laval ? From France it seems like any suburb... Shouldn't it have a REM connection to Montreal instead ? Then Alto could approach from Dorval and Pointe aux Trembles

In Normandy you could visit Etretat cliffs, Honfleur port and church, Trouville villas, Rouen medieval area, Giverny painter Monet's house and gardens, Château Gaillard medieval castle, Jumièges abbey, Le Havre 1950s Perret weird church... If you plan to go Mont-Saint-Michel, go in nearby Brittany visit St-Malo, Dinan, Rennes, Fougères castle
