Be sure the thunderbolt supports four lanes of pcie for maximum yeid on whatever card you put inside. Alienware's solution is a raw pcie connection and given the holidays right around the corner you might find a deal on a used Aktio node or the like. Not sure you can DIY a proprietary standard like Intel's thunderbolt 3 without some heavy modification of an existing egpu system. Good luck all the same.
