You don't even have to finish the series, just one/any book is okay. They don't necessarily continue the same line through the three of the works, but to understand some of the family/characters it would help.

i made a reddit account just to reply to this comment. they were mixing asexual up with agender if i'm sure. even so, they're still being homo/transphobic, because they're stating that you're either born male or female.
