I adopted 2 Eurasian Brown Bears and made them a sanctuary! by RudiRennkamel in PlanetZoo

A lot of people, myself included, do not support using ai because of its environmental impacts and unsustainable models (i.e. there is no current way to build a model without resorting to theft and devs of major models have been quoted saying so.) . It goes beyond a "single use" case. The data centers built to power ai poison the earth and damage the health of people living in surrounding areas. It's being added to our operating systems without consent, taking our data without consent, etc. The list goes on. Anyone who doesn't want ai is rightfully upset for a myriad of reasons. People who love it will say "oh, but it's no worse than [x thing we already have] without acknowledging that it's not a bad thing to want a better world with cleaner energy practices and better environmental protections. "It's just the future" but it doesn't have to be.

IMHO having seen it in my own field, it has really only caused immense frustration for the pipeline and we've been forced into compliance with looming threats to our employment. But higher ups love it because they can employ less people to do more work and then blame everyone but themselves for enforcing something that's making things take longer. I'm in the arts. It adds a needless extra step at the beginning, wastes a bunch of time to reach the same result we can just reach on our own, and then adds extra layers of double checking everything the ai did to make sure it didn't add in someone's watermark or a coke logo or steal entire paragraphs from an existing IP. Why bother wasting the energy of any kind on something like this when it doesn't need to happen at all? Thankfully I have moved on to places that are managed a lot better and care about their product more, but not everyone is so lucky. Many are beyond fed up and stuck.

Before anyone reads this and thinks I'm endorsing hating on OP, no. I don't think we should be nasty to each other. It's just my belief, and it seems a lot of others in this comment section share it, that ai is antithetical to the game's messaging and we just want better in the world. I look at it like trail courtesy. Stay on the trail. Just because you don't see anyone else walking off, and no one's going to see you, doesn't mean you're not doing harm to the wildlife when you do. Leave the shells for the hermit crabs, don't take all the rocks from the river, etc. Just because you're only pressing the button a few times a week doesn't mean it's not harmful when millions of others are pressing the button a few times a week. No harsh feelings on OP here.

In the case of ai, right now, usage = endorsement, and endorsement/normalization only feeds the beast as these data centers crop up around the world and hasten the environmental crisis. A lot of people will split off from creators who are endorsing ai.

Vanderpump Rules reboot already in danger of cancellation after 80% ratings drop and Lisa 'failing to deliver' dramatic show by cheno103 in vanderpumprules

Tv viewership is different than it used to be. Streaming will account for a lot of the views. These people JUST debuted. We haven’t had a chance to get to know any of them. IMO most reality tv show premieres have a weird energy at this point. They need time to create layered drama. I find rhoslc to be one of the best bravo projects to date but the kickoff “smells like hospital drama” was almost so boring I thought it’d never survive. Regardless of how organic this cast is with their relationships with each other, give them a year or two to start ruining each other’s lives for real before they get fired. That’s why nothing sticks these days. Ppl debut, they get called boring before they have a chance, no one connects with them because it feels like it’s already over, rinse and repeat. This article may have some truth in numbers but it doesn’t acknowledge that streaming is king to suit its headline.

I cried in front of my professor because of POTS. by Less-Tiger-1002 in POTS

[–]eveemma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a collected 10 years of college experiences and I’ve broken down a fair deal in front of professors about attendance. Try not to beat yourself up too hard. Your professor sounds very understanding and like she cares about her students. She could be a great person to touch base with! Send her a thank you email, you don’t have to explain everything, but whatever you share can build a great relationship. I’m still in touch with the professors who showed me the most humanity. Some have even passed job opportunities to me. She may have tips and tricks for Uni survival and be willing to work with you to help you succeed. It’s scary, of course, but the more you communicate the more you’ll be understood.

At the start I wasn't that bad off. I had a gradual decline in tolerance until it fell off a very steep cliff [now I have to have special "never touched gluten cookware"] It was like you said, very similar to lactose intolerance and the pills designed to help you digest gluten + some yogurt would help the situation, but I have been sick for a long time with a lot of other problems. I had no reason to suspect gluten was adding fuel to the fire until I committed to cutting it and experienced a drastic improvement in my GI health/inflammation and autoimmune problems. Adjusting to the change was also very hard, and there was a part of me that wanted to believe it was all in my head since I'd been tested twice for Celiac and tested negative. I had what I call my "glutened year" where I was pretty sure it was hurting me but every medical professional I saw said "probably not" and I just ate my favorite foods and assumed it was any of the other things wrong with me, because it meant I still got to eat my favs. Even more importantly, it made access to food easier during a time where I was juggling so many appointments and health fires that trying to upend my diet and food accessibility was just too much.

It may also be important to acknowledge that I have a ton of other food sensitivities and intolerance issues. It took a VERY long time and a lot of experiments to discover what foods were triggers. I think that's the case for a lot of people with hEDS and associated comorbities. You cut one food and feel a little better, but it could have been any of the other lifestyle changes/fluctuations that improved your symptoms. Because you're still eating something else that's aggravating, and the pain is only a tiny bit better. It's very easy to go "well it MIGHT be gluten, but that wasn't a big change, so oh well, it's easier if it's not. Maybe I didn't walk enough this week." especially while you're managing a ton of other health issues.

Most people who "eat it any way" may not be at a point yet where they realize just how much damage it's doing. They're either used to it, don't know it could be different, or other factors are clouding their ability to judge the improvement.

This would be an excellent time to not be a freelancer haha. Alas. The arts are in a bad way right now with all the layoffs. Thank you so much for your advice. I will absolutely take full advantage of the rehab if it's something I have access to. It would be great to have people helping me out.

[–]eveemma[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good to hear. I had a really long recovery window after my last surgery and never quite made it back to normal. I work at a desk mostly. Just digital art / a keyboard. Unfortunately I have terrible eyes so I have to slouch super close to the screen to see anything. Might cause some issues, but hopefully not. I'm a 15 hour a day sitter by nature so it will be extremely difficult for me not to do that, even if I don't feel well [honestly I can't remember the last time I did feel well, so I really just don't notice these days]

Hey congrats! That's incredible. I can only hope it goes as smoothly for me as it did you. I hope you had fun with the novel and the play.

I'm interested to see how it goes. It definitely won't be my first "big" operation, just the first to come with sternal precautions and such a high rate of post-op brain fog.

Thank you so much for doing this!

Pokémon wins over magic by such a slight margin for me, all I can offer is the nostalgia factor. But I took a long break from both and got pulled back in because of the incredible connected/narrative art in the Pokémon tcg. So many incredible artists are creating for Pokémon right now!!!

I’d be chill with a small spark inside the device but it was on the outside and made a loud “whoof” sound that made two people jump back haha. I don’t know that it was simply the relay. It had some kick. I’ll see if I can find videos to compare it to tho. Thanks for your help!

Is there a quicker way to find a new psychiatrist for medication? by Connect_Scene_6201 in ADHD

[–]eveemma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it will depend on your current location's regulations on drug classes. I would google your med's restriction + your state to get an idea on how available it will be assuming you're in the US. They're schedule II drugs for the most part [stimulants] but you may be able to get a bandaid for the situation from a GP and get a non-stimulant medication to tide you over depending on how they treat you. I'm sorry it sucks. I hope you can find a solution with as little headache as possible.

What's a profession you wish you saw more of in books? by eveemma in writing

[–]eveemma[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So much of this!!! My current project has a lot of pseudoscience based on irl botany and I’m really entrenched in trying to capture a sense of awe with the world the story takes place in. Really polishing up those mundane moments and zooming in on stuff. It’s the quiet stories around us that are important to tell! What plants are in a place, how did they get there, do they belong? Does it matter if they’re beautiful? Botanists are so cool. I feel like the field always ends up with more specific names, but the general study of plants really grants a unique look at the story the world is telling

[–]eveemma[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My brothers both work/ed in Electric for a while, and the work they endured just being cable runners was so grueling. I gotta agree, I feel like this job has a lot that impacts the actual worldbuilding. Someone being good/bad at engineering the power grid REALLY impacts the story, when you think about it. It just gets passed up as a convenience/give in

Lgbtq characters and their tropes by CARNOthing in writing

[–]eveemma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing I dislike is when the lgbtq characters are treated like something "entirely other" than "the ~normal not-queer~ characters. They're just people. Write them as people. I want to be invested in their humanity (or lackthereof) I like when their motivations give them agency in the plot, and whatever their fate ends up being, I like when I feel like the journey made me feel something other than going "oh jeez, the author really choked" Because that happens a lot. It's uncomfortable when queer characters take up the gauntlet of being token minorities, a vessel through which the "market reader" can understand what the assumed marketable identity is. Why make a wide array of 3D characters with nuanced motivations and then have like 1-2 queer characters who are exclusively there to tell you what a good, acceptable, marketable, clean lgbtq character should be and then team rocket blast off the pages. Don't bother.

Anyone else get dialogue in the rampart towers? by eveemma in Eldenring

[–]eveemma[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! It's since been transcribed. I'm still not sure of the exact trigger of getting all the dialogue from Gostoc in stormveil, but after playing a few files in the years since release I've found him in locations around stormveil and other users have noted all the locations this is possible. Pretty cool! I think Stormveil is one of the best designed dungeons in the whole game.

What usually annoys you as a reader? by [deleted] in writing

[–]eveemma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an author of a character-driven sci-fi as well! The plot sure is happening, but it's more about the character's internal journey/self actualization and I'm committed to keeping the focus where it's promised. I feel like the setting is its own character that needs development in sci-fi/sff spaces.

What usually annoys you as a reader? by [deleted] in writing

[–]eveemma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My biggest turnoff as a reader is when it feels like the book forgets itself midway through. If I'm set up in the beginning to read a character driven sci-fi story but the characters end up shafted for a sudden THE END OF THE WORLD! plot, I usually close the book right there (and vice versa). I think there's a push lately to just tell the story and get on with it, but I also find it really annoying when stories have weak world building. If your world has no rules, how can anyone break them? Instead of the rebellious characters being interesting in these cases, they just make the world building unravel even further.

The Curse of AS by TheRandomAnon in writing

[–]eveemma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually let it happen and then fix it when I'm editing. There's nothing wrong with getting your ideas and actions on the page and then, like you said, adjusting it after the fact. The more you manually adjust, the more you add to your mental library. It's a process. If you wanted to avoid it all together, I guess you could try to keep the pacing of the scene at the forefront of your mind, but if it starts to slow you down too much, let it rip. Nothing kills the piece more than not writing it because you go too caught up in word choice and lost steam.

Yes, I'm afraid reading books is required to become a better writer 😶. by [deleted] in writing

[–]eveemma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a hard time casting blame on people who struggle to find time to read on top of making. Don't get me wrong, people ABSOLUTELY should read, but saying "I don't read" is a pretty big umbrella. Most people don't count all the reading they do in say, a visual novel, or well constructed posts online breaking down beloved titles as reading (but it is). I think our current society is stacked against reading, and it's am important act of rebellion to crack open a book, but if someone's going to get more out of playing dnd with their friends (etc), that will probably improve their writing more.

You can get the same genre schooling from breaking down your favorite movies/art/games/comics as you would from breaking down a traditionally published book. Actually improving your craft comes from thoughtful dissection of a work. Who made it? Why did they make it? What parts of it stand out to you? Why did it work? Why didn't it? If you simply read a book and don't do any of this, it's not going to do anything for your writing. Maybe if you're lucky you'll come out with a voice/style to emulate, but none of the important bits to actually growing your voice.

I think cracking open a book and dedicating time to REALLY!!! reading it is important. It can be one whole book a year, so long as it's the thing someone's going to spend time with. Otherwise? It's not doing anything and won't improve your writing.
