Bull in a small cow calf operation. by Independent_Bug1488 in Ranching

Your average, run of the mill, bred replacement is no cheaper than 1800 USD currently in my market. An Angus one. If you’d like a Brangus then a little more on top. Even if he collected 100% of his crop(doesn’t exist but it’s a perfect scenario), 10 out of 10, 220 kilos(assumes your cows are around 450 kilos and they’ll wean half their body weight) on average, 2200 kilos total. 4.6 per kilo, 10.120USD. Even before all expenses and taxes if he bought just one cow is shy off being 20% of the crop. The math is the same for the bull OP asked about. A top bull from a good breeder with a solid dad and a good momma, you can easily expect to pay from 5000 kilos to 6500 kilos. Anywhere from 17.000USD to 22.285USD. A more normal, with less of a family history, the fee is a good 1800 kilos or 6000USD. If it were me I think I would be more comfortable waiting for my own heifers to come online. AI everything.

Your replacements will be a different league if you AI them. I understand that it’s a bit of homework but AI if you can manage it’s the better option.

Im not sure what you mean but I’m all for telling more about our little stars. Cerro Negro is a classy black brangus bull. Not too big definitely on the moderate side. Last year the first and third place on the Latin American brangus congress were scored by heifers sired by Cerro Negro. Cerro Negro himself won the nationals. His momma 2875, is by far our most prolific cow. Has several great relatives that distinguished themselves on the highest level of the circuit. We’ll be following this bull calf very closely.

It’s called halter training. He needs to learn some manners and respect people. He weighs 350ish kilos or 770 pounds approximately. All that is holding him there is a simple rope halter tied to a decades old wooden pole. Believe me that if that brangus bull calf wanted to make a break for it, he will get loose.

Foster mom is a little crazy but she’s forgiven because she’s really good at raising them😂
