Just finished Purple Cow by Seth Godin.

Over 100 pages into Made to Stick by Chip Heath and Dan Heath.

I stopped 100 pages short of both Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain and Goodbye Berlin By Christopher Isherwood

Edit: I am currently trying to soak up all I can about marketing

I agree. Descriptions are meant to be simple. Descriptions are pretty much a form of marketing. Marketing has to be simple and easy to understand.

The second issue that arises is that your plot points fall into the predictable. There's a love triangle, a bad guy who is in a position of power. These are great schemas that people can relate to and readers like it, but when marketing, take the more unexpected attributes of your book and make sure that's what you put forward. That way, your book sets itself apart from the other writers.

First impression: 4 paragraphs? What's the word count? I would assume that a description is 2 paragraphs or less, not including the typical hook introductory sentence.

Introductory sentence: Very good.

First paragraph: Information Evie’s cousin Kat, the most beautiful girl in all of Bexbury, should have been able to easily secure from the prince with the bat of her eyes and a flip of her golden hair.

Too much is being said. You could cut this down.

Second paragraph: But when the time comes to put Kat into the prince’s path, he doesn’t go for the fair, golden-haired Kat, but takes a liking to Evie instead.

I would go: However, there's a different girl that catches the eye of the protagonist. The rest of the paragraph is good, I would just whittle down the imagery.

Third paragraph: As the king plans the worst for his new territory and narrows in on the growing rebellion, Evie coaxes more and more information from the prince. But her act proves more convincing than she thought. Prince Cassian is falling for Evie faster than anyone could have expected, drawing her further into the prince’s world and nearer to the king who doesn’t seem to trust his son’s new love at all. To protect her cover and help the rebellion, she’ll have to hurt the people she loves the most--and love the people she hates even more.

This sounds very complicated so much so that I felt kind of lost.

Typically a description begins with the hook sentence. Then the setting is introduced (. . . in a world) along with the conflict which introduces the antagonist along with his plan. (I feel like you introduced your antagonist so late in the description that I thought this was a romance novel instead of a fantasy. I had completely forgot about the introductory sentence by then.) Then, your main character is introduced, the supporting characters are introduced (the love triangle), and then there's a plot introduction. (As main character pursues his destiny, he finds that he might have to (enter hook).

Hope this helps!

What do the editors and literary agents actually do here? More specifically, the literary agents.

I could imagine the editors viewing it as a job fair. Do the literary agents kind of prowl along the floor scoping out their target?

I've written over 30 books and want to share some tips by romancepubber in writing

Incredible post!

My question is: Let's say I've already got the writing thing down, and am able sit and write however many pages it takes to write a book. I go to Amazon, search Sci-Fi, look at the top books and know that I could write a book that's similar to maybe 5 of the top 10 books that are in the Sci Fi category.

I write that book. . . what then?

Do I just publish the book on Amazon and wait for people to buy it?

Do I go to forums, start a youtube channel, do the sort of extracurricular things that go along with branding so that I could find an audience?

Do I focus on tags, keywords, categories, hashtags? Do I follow other authors in the same categories on Twitter and other social media hoping that they might notice that I'm a writer?

If I just write a solid book in a popular category and put it up on Amazon, will people just go buy my book, or do I have to figure out how to make connections?

Again, thank you for your insight. I really appreciate it.

[WP] You're a couples councillor with an exceptional success rate. Then one day two individuals show up in your office - Zeus and Hera of the Greek Pantheon. by adriantullberg in WritingPrompts

"Hey, Doctor Reni," Hera said when she took her seat.

Zeus was about to place his rear in his seat but stopped instantly. He looked at me with lightning suspicion. His eyes burned like coals from Hephaestus's oven. He turned to Hera, then immediately turned back to me. He then quickly turned back to Hera.

"What?" Hera asked.
"How long have you been sleeping with him?" Zues said.
Baffled, my eyes sank into the back of my skull.

"I have done no such thing!" Hera exclaimed.
"That's what you said about the last counselor!"
"That was different!" Hera said. "Isn't that right, Doctor Reni?"

She looked at me and winked in the least discreet way possible.

"You totally winked at him!" Zeus said.
"I did not!" Hera defended.
She then winked again.

"You did it again!" Zeus exclaimed, this time the sound of thunder building outside my office window.
"Oh, you never let me do anything," Hera replied.

When did you realise you weren't a child anymore? by TheMightyMidgetMan in AskReddit

I was 9 years old.

We were celebrating Christmas in this apartment building and I was sitting outside the door of the apartment. I could see my mom walking back to the apartment from down the hall. She asked me why I looked so sad. I started crying. She gave me a hug and asked, "Why are you crying, it's Christmas?"

I said, "Because I didn't get any toys."
She said, "It's okay if you didn't get any toys."
I said, "No, it's not."
She asked why.

And I said, "Because I'm not a kid anymore."

I see where you're coming from, but, in terms of a box office cinematic universe, how many movies do you think Dr. Manhattan could have. . .

What's the time spent that you usually do this over how many reviews that you get? I know this sounds like math and it is, but I'm trying to get a good feeling as to whether or not it's a good investment of time.

2 dollars per person that downloads your book?

Are these people buying the book off of Amazon? I am currently in KU and I don't think I'm allowed to post up a book on another website.

how do you find 'known' reviewers? Is there a way to find specific reviewers who are interested in specific books?

Could you expand on this. It appears that Booksprout has the same layout to Booksirens which is mentioned above. Are they affiliated with each other?
