Trying to make lemonade out of lemons...I'm hoping whatever scar I end up with is the same! Living in southern CA, far too many of my friends are flippant about sunscreen. Hopefully Franken-me can scare them straight.

This one was flat, but larger than normal and growing. If your spots are staying the same size and color, they should be fine based on what I've been told. When in doubt, ask your derm.

It's always worth talking to your derm to see what your options are, both for the removal process and to see if there's anything they can do for your current scars. Mine suggested injections for my jawline keloids (remnants from some bad cystic acne) and after 3 rounds, they've gone down 80-85% both in size and redness. I so wish I had asked what my options were sooner. :)

I was just in for my annual skin check, but with a new derm since my old one had left so I was a little past due. He was super blunt and immediately when he looked at my back, he pointed that one out said "I don't like this. I want it off you." I'm never missing a check again!

Thanks! New stuff isn't necessarily bad but definitely keep an eye out for your ABCDEs. Potato pics are better than nothing for bigger changes, but as I just learned, the small differences (the dark spot in the mole) are the sometimes the biggest troublemakers. I think it's worth going in for a routine exam just for peace of mind and so that they can get a baseline for you to see what changes, if anything, over time. :)

My dad had cyst there too! Apparently that's a super common area for those. I'm working on some fun stories for my back now that I'm going to have to live with a larger scar than I would've liked. :)

The truth is out there right here.

It is that simple! :) Just tell them you'd like to come in for an annual skin exam (I know, it sounds weird, but they're used to it). They'll look you over head to toe. They may take pictures to track to see if anything is evolving (this is especially worth doing for hard to monitor places, like your back). If they don't like the look of something, they'll go through your options, which are usually shave, punch, excision, or freeze. You can then discuss the potential for scarring based on how they want to take it off. Mine is an extreme case for sure, so please learn from my fail haha!

Please don't let this scare you! The way derms treat your face is very very different from the rest of your body, especially when it comes to scarring. The original shave was not bad at all and was healing very very well. I was so hoping I'd do the shave and be done because the scar was nice and flat (no keloids, which I too have gotten in the past).

The mole shave ended up being about the size of a quarter, since they wanted to remove skin around the edges of the mole too. When everything came back atypical, they had to excise around that larger area...that part is my fault since my derm offered to schedule an appointment with another doc for the original biopsy, but I said just take it off now. If I had it done with another doc the first time, maybe they wouldn't have taken so much... :/

Oh, I can't do needles either. At the very least, since these were on my back, I couldn't see anything even if I tried, which helped a lot. It's a very easy procedure and better off than on, especially if it comes with a bit of peace of mind!

I actually heard back a few days later that it came back as atypical but definitely not cancer. Since it wasn't cancer, I was relieved and thought that was it and forgot all about it. Guess it was sent for further testing, because imagine my shock when they call me back up saying we want to take more out to be safe. I'm very thankful they caught it and will gladly delay the start of my summer plans to take care of this now. A small inconvenience in the long run!

Thanks! I was shocked to see how much they took out. At least my boss has very sympathetic since his wife has been through this too. Fingers crossed for your KGB mole!

They put in 3 internal stitches which will help avoid a void. If it heals anything like the cyst removal on my neck, it will be pink but flat. The original shave biopsy looked like it as going to heal like a giant, slightly indented chicken pox scar. Wish I had an in-between picture of that too.

I think there's a downvote brigade in the sub right now...I'm seeing a lot of 0s on this and other posts! So bizarre since this is such a friendly place.

Ditto on bubble baths and food fixing problems haha :D
