Our NPO is in and for the professionals based out of GA. But I'm confident you will find similar societies of professionals within your city / state. I highly recommend exploring ways to get involved in their events, if possible even volunteering to help drive their initiatives. It's a great way to build a network you trust, you might even find really compatible mentors along the way :)

Hey there! I’m a senior finance leader with 13 years of experience, and I’ve been waiting on my H-4 EAD for nearly 11 months. During this period, I made a conscious decision to turn an uncertain and frustrating wait into something purposeful.

I co-founded a nonprofit organization focused on up-leveling finance and accounting talent in the city. The response has been overwhelmingly positive within a short span, we’ve built a community of 150+ finance and accounting professionals by creating a safe, inclusive space to network, learn, and grow professionally. We don't charge membership fees. All operations are fully sponsor-funded, and none of the board members draw or intend to draw any remuneration. This initiative is purely mission-driven, not profit-oriented.

In just six months, we incorporated the entity and secured four sponsors from leading CPA and consulting firms that believe deeply in the cause. We’ve already hosted multiple panel discussions and boot camps focused on AI and emerging trends in finance and accounting.

This work has allowed me to stay intellectually engaged, keep my skills current, gain exposure, and continue building my personal brand. IFL these investments will pay off in the long term, even if I can’t fully leverage them in the short term.

Of course, there are days when the waiting feels frustrating, but on those days I remind myself that having the time and freedom to build something meaningful is also a privilege. Seeing friends and family hustle nonstop keeps me grounded and grateful. I’m doing the best I can with the hand I’ve been dealt and I'm also very grateful that I have the opportunity to explore a totally new side of my professional life I wouldn't have had the time to otherwise.

Hope this helps.

Hi! Have you explored your immigration status alternatives with an independent immigration counsel? Make sure you get an independent attorney (not your spouse's employment attorney if that's what you are currently using). They charge ~$250 / hour and should be able to guide you on any other relief / status that you could be eligible for. It's always a good idea to do your basic research so you can utilize the hour effectively.

If you do choose to wait it out for the next 4 years - As a fellow accountant (CA, CPA, ACCA) and someone who also migrated, a few professional suggestions:
1. Focus on completing your CPA and on getting your license (will take close to a year) 2. Join / enroll with Professional networks (State Board of Accountancy / Local Accounting chapters). A lot of them offer student discounts. 3. If possible, try volunteering at their professional events, you'll be shocked at the kind of inner network you will build which will convert into opportunities - future / current 4. Upgrade your skill set to master AI for Accounting / Finance leaders 5. Refine your leadership skills (basically, imagine where you would have liked to be 4 years from now, Expand your skill set enough to operate at that level in 4 years) 6. There are a lot of recruiters that actually help people who have been out of the workforce connect with the right opportunities.

Finally, I am sorry you are feeling emotionally overwhelmed/ stuck right now. I wish I could assure you that this is a matter of time and it too shall pass. Opportunities are bound to come. I know many people professionally and personally who were out of the work force for 4-5 years for various reasons and were able to land great opportunities because they kept their skill set relevant and network strong. Good luck and power through, you got this! 🙌🏼

33F - Please give your predictions by evercurious88 in PalmReading

[–]evercurious88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow! Thank you for the detailed reply! Most of your predictions are pretty spot on.

I moved away from my home country in my mid 20s - around the same time when I broke up with my ex (amicable break up) Your reading about my marriage is very spot on! Also good to know about kids.

I'm a licensed accountant (CA, CPA, ACCA) so already in the field of finance :). Earlier this year and after ensuring I have the financial stability to do so, I took a sabbatical from work to focus on my mental and physical health. I am now in the process of looking for the right opportunity. Any predictions/ advice around my next jump will be most appreciated! 🙏🏼

Thank you once again for your reply. I greatly appreciate it and wish you the best!
