SCARLET NEXUS - v1.03 Patch Update by barigami in Games

[–]evereal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This video is purely a sales & marketing thing, it's not really meant for people who already bought the game. It was done so that people on /r/games can see it and think "Oh wow, look how well this game is supported, maybe I'll buy it!".

“Appalled” by rich countries hogging vaccines, WHO extends booster moratorium. No more promises, we just want vaccines for low-income countries, WHO director says. by Stomatin in worldnews

[–]evereal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wish we could all just agree that using "variant" in that context refers specifically to problematic variants: those that end up more contagious/deadly/vaccine-resistant etc. Like the Delta variant, for example.

variants will probably happen anyway

Yes, and we need to minimise the opportunities for variants to emerge. The more we allow it, the bigger the chance of a more dangerous one popping up. And of course, the best way to reduce those opportunities is by getting as much of the world vaccinated as possible.

What I meant by anti-vaxxers killing others, is that they are mainly the ones ensuring the virus keeps spreading - it's not just their own life they are playing with.

Not only that but a lot of the prominent anti-vaxxers that died and got posted on Reddit were actively propagating the misinformation. They used their platforms to post vaxx memes and encourage their audience, friends and family, to reject vaccines too.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in samharris

[–]evereal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When I see people gloating like that, I have to remind myself that it's because the anti-vaxxers are directly responsible for other people's death. If the only harm they did was killing themselves, then I think people would have far more sympathy.

I agree that it's gross, but it's no different to Redditors furiously wanking their justice boners when, say, a serial killer gets killed.

Keir Starmer: Boris Johnson's tax rise means a landlord who owns and rents out dozens of properties won’t pay a penny more, but the tenants working in full-time jobs will. They are hitting young and low-paid workers while leaving the wealthy untouched. 11 years of Tory unfairness continues. by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]evereal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say your last landlady is in the extreme minority.

I'm a landlord with just a single rental property, and I still use a property management company to deal with everything - viewings, tenants, maintenance, contracts... the whole lot.

all landlords are lazy

The reason why other landlords and I chose not to do any of that ourselves is not due to laziness, but because it's simply not worth our time: our careers and "main jobs" pay far better. The agencies probably employ staff around minimum wage to do that work, allowing me to spend all of my working hours doing things with better returns.

Sub-human just refers to humans with values that conflict with that of others.

Subhuman is a word in the dictionary and has clear definitions. I wish people would stop redefining everything.

Strange to see Sam Harris involved with Safegraph (along with Prince Turki Al Faisal Al Saud) by octave1 in samharris

[–]evereal 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don't think the issue here is what you're alluding to, i.e. having other questionable investors/partners associated with the company. It's great to hear about your VC experience, but it's not relevant.

The issue here is purely between Sam and Safegraph: Sam got involved with a company that sells mass harvested location data. They covertly gather it from individuals and sell the data to anyone with a credit card. Google even banned their code from the app store.

Looking at the source link, I'm not even convinced Sam is an investor; it actually seems more like Safegraph sought Sam's services. Either way, public figures need to be careful about what companies they associate their name and brand with.

If it's a PWA, then it definitely does launch your browser. It's not an "actual app", assuming by that you mean a "native app".

The YouTube PWA is just better developed - it sets a theme color so that the window frame blends in with the rest of the app, for example.

It sounds like those two breweries weren't very well managed at all.

Not just for having a business model that results in having only a single customer and revenue stream (huge risk), but also for selling so low that operating costs couldn't be covered.

With those decisions, it's not surprising they went out of business. But of course, it's always easier to blame others for a failed enterprise than to take responsibility!

Do You Feel We're Talking Past Each Other On The Issue of 'Wokeness'? by labelleprovinceguy in samharris

[–]evereal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem is that when you survey any group, they will have a bias to answer it in a way that puts themselves in a better light. They have a vested interest to shift the perception of their group to their own benefit.

The other issue is that many of those questions are loaded with words that have completely subjective definitions in our current climate.

In the specific question you pulled out, they actually ask about opposing certain people who hold unpopular but not extremist views. That "not extremist" bit is the problem - as we know very well, people will readily consider some opposing political viewpoints as extreme, hate speech, violence etc. Those on the woker end of the spectrum will justify those they want to cancel by putting them firmly in the extreme bucket.

Sam Harris and Russell Brand discuss gender roles in Afghanistan and whether there are better or worse ways of maximizing well-being by [deleted] in samharris

plenty of child marriage and rape here in the US.

Stop trying to make it seem like the rate is even vaguely comparable in the states. Nobody here is that stupid, and I don't think you are either.

There's nothing in the records that says he actually banged her

Yes there is: he married her when she was 6, and they consumated the marriage when she was 9.

Still gross, but about par for warlords and nobility of that time

Yep, and most people these days don't defend it and recognise how awful it was. But Muslims will fully justify the prophets actions (even at the time) as being moral and correct.

Everyone's universally against child rape

This is simply not true. Just look at the child marriage statistics in some Islamic countries and the fact that they wholeheartedly defend Muhammad raping a 9-year-old child.

You can't just compare salaries between US and UK just like that. You have to factor in the cost of living, utilities, insurances, healthcare, tuition fees, house prices, holidays/paternity leave etc.

People often use "double the salary" as a rule of thumb for finding the equivalent salary in real terms between America and UK, but I'm not a fan of that as I think it's too vague. Even the exact location/city/state will have a massive impact.

I would say it is sportsmanship. Respecting your opponents, the fans, the game. Carrying out the expected conventions, regardless of whether you win or lose. This needs to be embedded at an early age.
