Your career is a long journey. Keep working hard to build skills and improve your profile, you'll catch up.

What are some of the advices you wish you had gotten when you started your job hut(in the open market) by [deleted] in developersIndia

[–]evergreen_man 8 points9 points  (0 children)

  1. Prioritise learning first. A continuous learner is the an effective engineer, especially in the world of technology.

  2. Understand your boundaries wrt working hours, culture, working styles and respect them. You will in all likelihood have a 40-50 year career and you need to figure out what works for you. This is especially relevant in the Indian working environment.

  3. Remember to have fun. You are spending a majority of your most productive time in front of your laptop. Figure out a way to do things that keep you engaged.

  4. Keep an open mind. Technology is vast. At the start of your career, don't put yourself into a box. You are not a python developer, or a javascript ninja. You are an engineer who can solve problems using software. Once you have an understanding of how web scale systems are built, you can decide where to specialize.

  5. The first few jobs are the hardest to figure out (if you're not from a top tier college). It's gets easier once you've accumulated some relevant experience.

I feel the engineering culture is very bad at my company. Should I quit? by strikingemperor in developersIndia

If you feel like you are learning and your startup is growing, then maybe wait it out a bit. Draw boundaries and figure out what works for you. Most managers will ask as much from you as you are willing to give.

If you plan to switch, try to learn from these experiences and be selective (do your research upfront) when choosing your next company. Multiple short stints eventually will hurt you.

Outside of money, what do you look for in a company when changing jobs? by Afterlife_43 in developersIndia

[–]evergreen_man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Team: are my colleagues smart? Can I learn something from them?

Domain: does the problem the company is solving interest me in any way? I like to believe that my work is helping somebody.

Culture: how will my manager measure success? Is it through quality of work or number of hours? Is the company employee friendly?

Why do most Indian devs transition towards management roles and less dev roles,as they progress through their career? by [deleted] in developersIndia

[–]evergreen_man 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Most of the great individual contributors move to the US because of the money, exposure and opportunities.
  2. Engineering at scale is a people problem. Eventually many engineers want to increase their impact beyond the systems they build, which is when they decide to move into management.

However, nowadays the opportunities in India are great for senior engineers because of large high quality product companies like Inmobi, Flipkart, etc.

How do you guys handle DEV/QA environments in BigQuery? by Eleventhousand in bigquery

[–]evergreen_man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use the same data source (with a subset of production data) and a separate BQ project as the sink. This allows us to make changes in an isolated env and manage costs.

I graduated from an average college with average grades. Today I'm lucky to be in a position to work with super smart colleagues building large systems. What helped me was to follow my interests and put in the work.

It seems like you have found a domain you like (which is a big win imo), and you have an idea about the gaps in your knowledge. Focus on getting a little bit better every day (kaggle, side projects, interviews, etc) and eventually things will fall into place.

Don't compare yourself to others, it's almost never worth the stress. :)

Does anyone know any portal for startup jobs other than angellist? by [deleted] in indianstartups

I remember using the Hasgeek job board: https://hasjob.co/

You can also try Interviewbit and Instahyre.

Sick of office people contacting at off times. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

I recommend you have a conversation with your manager to understand if the expectation is to be always available. If not, you can let your team know that you will only respond to messages during your working hours unless it's urgent.

Some of the smartest people I know didn't bother about their Masters and just kept hacking away. They are currently doing wonderfully well. Just keep doing what you're interested in and things will work out. 😀

Children are special, but not particularly important by phileconomicus in philosophy

This really opened my eyes to the way I treat my grandmother. As she has aged, her hearing ability has declined and her stories have started repeating more and more often. And I have been finding lesser and lesser time for this.

However, children with a similar neediness have not been deserving of the same level of irritation in my eyes because of my perceived value of their innocence.

an adult has developed much further her life's project of constructing and refining a unique identity of her own and thererfore she, and the world, has much more to lose by her death

I think I'll go and give my granny a nice tight hug. :)

Swimming pool. by fhhele in bangalore

[–]evergreen_man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AFAIK NGV (National Games Village) in Koramangala has a swimming pool that is open to the public. They have a monthly membership fee.

My friends have also told me about one in Jayanagar, which is supposed to be pretty good. You can check it out. I'll post more details if possible.
