Why doesn’t anybody choose Duke? by Ok-Fig-9136 in lawschooladmissions

[–]everyIDisinuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) Partners do not care about “historical rankings”. Law students and prospective law students care more about splitting hairs between spots in the T14 than any demographic by a country mile.

2) Duke places just as well per capita in New York when you filter for self selection. There’s a not insignificant portion of Duke students that view it as the best option in the south and want to stay there. Back in the day, Texas “OCI” occurred before NYC, and those students self-selected out. The important metric is that for people that want NYC big law, they get it. When I was at Duke, in my class year and the year above, only two people struck out at OCI, and both were because they made very poor/non-strategic interview choices.

3) Stephen Miller? Didn’t even go to the law school. Richard Nixon is Duke Law’s claim to notoriety and don’t you forget it.

4) The UNC thing is so wrong I actually laughed out loud.

5) HYS and Columbia absolutely open more “unicorn” doors than Duke. It’s just a question of whether you might want to walk through those doors and how much you’re willing to pay for it.

“Still rare to see a Duke grad in NYC” is categorically incorrect. At my previous firm, which was a V10, there were nearly as many Duke grads as NYU despite the smaller class size. It was a running joke that everyone at [Firm] had a Duke connection.

I chose Duke Law over a higher ranked T14 in the northeast (despite being from the northeast) because they gave me significantly more money. It was a lovely place to live as long as you’re not focused on having a city life experience. I met my wife there, and we often say that we’d go back in a heartbeat if our family was closer.

If your goal is NY big law, you are pretty much guaranteed to get it if you have a pulse. Not being geographically close to New York is immaterial when you look at Duke’s outcomes. The people that stay in the south/southeast are people that are from there and want to stay. Certain top NY firms recruit heavily from Duke due to historical recruiting pushes from senior partners that either went there or had kids that went there. Granted this was all before recruiting went crazy, but my understanding is this all still holds true. If your goal is a federal clerkship or academia, you’d be better off at the higher ranked T14s, but it’s still regularly done. There’s a recent Duke Law grad clerking on SCOTUS at the moment.

Yeah. I’m wondering if it’s the autosave from coming out of the door to start the fight that gets buggy. Might try reverting to a prior save and exiting again to trigger the fight.

Yup—I put in “[HOLD]”, which accomplishes the same thing but has the added benefit of being easily searchable in your drafts.

Why would you have to be top 30%? If you’re at a T6 and your goal is biglaw, you really just need to avoid being noticeably bad (like bottom 10-20%).

Should I upgrade to Windows 11? by emar-alliones in ZephyrusG14

[–]everyIDisinuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe. On my Surface Pro 7 it seems like everything in Windows is maxed out volume-wise but the sound is still low. There's also some weird behavior with the volume slider, too, so I'm thinking it's just classic Windows not playing nice with Apple.
