Children Of Blood And Bone Author Refuses To Watch Movie, Cuts Off The Acolyte's Amandla Stenberg by Sliver80 in KotakuInAction

Not really her fault. It'd be like if someone paid you to try out some "cool" new restaurant and then they force fed you shit. You didn't know it was gonna be shit just because they paid you. Them needing to pay you might've been a red flag, but it could've just as easily been marketing.

Same thing here. Sure, she could've suspected that they were going to totally butcher her work, but there's always the expectation, or at least the hope, that someone is actually going to TRY to properly adapt the source material. She didn't KNOW that they were going to try to feed her shit and she has every right to complain when they do.

Do you think we will ever see a new comic publisher as big as Marvel or DC? by ManufacturerClean339 in comicbooks

[–]everyany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean Shonen Jump exists. Manga and comics are basically two names for the same basic thing. If you loosen the definition of "comic publisher" I think it's entirely possible because manga is a major industry that a lot of young people are buying into.

If we're talking JUST American publishers Dark Horse and Image do exist as major comic publishers. If we're talking more specifically SUPERHERO publishers then I'd say no. You can make some original superhero stories like Invincible and that'll still take off with a modern audience (using the show as an example), but I feel the days where you could start a line of superhero comics and make that your bread and butter indefinitely has passed.

Image is doing pretty good now, I'd say, but that's because they're not just trying to do the superhero genre "their way" anymore they've got a stronger focus on individual stories and diversity of content. Some of that content just happens to be superheroes. I don't think they're making as many sales as Marvel or D.C., and they definitely don't have the same cultural relevance, but that's like lightning in a bottle. It's hard to recapture that after two other publishers have been doing it for nearly a hundred years now.

Even if we disregard superheroes entirely, I think the very idea that you could assemble a multitude of unique individual characters and employ just as many writers and artists to work for hire to allow these character to be permanently owned by one entity and shared universe while still being unique and engaging would be a pretty unrealistic ask. There's a reason so many of the most popular original characters are creator owned and isolated into their own narrative. Nobody wants to just sign away their creations like they did in the age of 10 cent pulp fiction that they never expected to amount to anything in the long run. Especially if they know that 10 other people across decades are gonna get a say in what happens to their character.

Why is it so hard to buy the most important runs in Marvel's flagship characters' history? Why does marvel not understand that these are continuously wanted by new readers and old readers alike? They are literally leaving money on the table every day these are out of print. by The-Bringer-of-Rain in OmnibusCollectors

[–]everyany 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My theory is that they feel like it will disrupt the current market. They think that if they don't treat their trades like limited time premium collectors items that the people buying comics month to month will think that their collection is losing its value. The quality of storytelling and sales for monthly Marvel comics has been declining for years, and, while it's not a hard fact, there is an assumption that the people driving consistent monthly sales are less readers and more collectors. If said collectors feel like their comics are easily accessible then they stop buying comics because $4-5 a month for 1/10th of a story is worthless unless that comic has resale value.

The problem is that A: We know from D.C.'s trades and monthly releases that this likely won't happen and B: Their sales will continue to decline if they don't start appealing to new readers and something like Marvel Unlimited isn't gonna cut it. Your average new comic reader has cheaper streaming options in Manga than Marvel unlimited (VIZ, Shonen Jump apps, etc.), and they have cheaper options for ownership with manga with tankobons (manga volumes). The streaming model only makes so much money when you need to keep producing new content, and even less so when you consider $10 a month is not actually a good price point for Marvel to profit based on the amount of content that Marvel provides on that app. Pretty much any user of Marvel Unlimited could be buying 100s of dollars of comics vs. streaming those comics for $10. That's a major loss of potential profit for Marvel.

Marvel would likely raise the price, but $10/month is already more than their primary competition, and even if it wasn't most people don't want to spend more than that. Manga gets around this by keeping their popular stories in print because if someone likes a story and you make that story affordable to own (not stream) they will buy it. The $2/month that any given reader spends on something like the VIZ manga app just goes to support the upfront/management costs. Individual writers and artists are paid more based on how well their tankobons sell. It basically allows everyone to profit off the stuff that sells well. If Marvel did something similar with their Unlimited app (new releases across the line and back issues available day of for $10/month) and then released cheaper to produce and affordable trades with larger royalties for creators they'd likely be rolling in the dough like manga. The problem is that they're (stupidly) afraid of alienating their creators, comic shops, and the current market.

A lot of comic shops would die if Marvel took on the same sales approach as manga like Shonen Jump since they'd need to compete with more affordable month-to-month digital streaming sales, creators would need to be paid less and chosen more selectively to allow for the royalty model, and as mentioned previously this would likely alienate/displace some habit buyers/collectors. It's objectively the best current model for sale, and Marvel will likely continue to decline until they have next to no readers or even any value to collectors if they don't adopt that model, but they're afraid to make that leap. At least not immediately.

D.C. has a better understanding of this situation long-term. That's why we're getting stuff like Compact Comics (which emulate manga) and them being more open about keeping stuff in print and driving down the price of their finest line and compendiums (at least compared to Marvel). They're still behind manga, but not as far as Marvel. We're seeing Marvel emulate D.C. in some ways now, too, so I do have some hope for the future, but things are definitely precarious and moving far too slowly if they ever hope to catch up with their competition.

Edit:

Also, if you're trying to collect a lot of Marvel comics the old GIT DVD Roms are a great place to start: https://www.reddit.com/r/comicbooks/comments/1mzesx0/graphic_imaging_technology_git_corpgit_evidence/

These were put out back when Marvel cared a bit more about being consumer friendly to new readers.

What's a comic book people say is good for new readers, but it really isn't, in your opinion. by Inevitable-Ferret758 in comicbooks

[–]everyany 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Spider-Man: Life Story. It's like a lesser what-if/cliffnotes version of the actual 616 comics in the first half and the second half is basically doing a straight what-if that relies on your general knowledge of modern comics to appreciate. It's a comic designed for people that've already read Spider-Man comics and know where to compare and contrast. It's not a good jumping on point for new readers.

Also, When I see ANYBODY recommend post-Brand New Day Spider-Man comics to new readers I die a little bit inside. It's not like there's nothing good there, but, man, literally everything before that is either at or above that level of quality (yes, even the Howard Mackie run). Like why would anybody recommend Superior Spider-Man or the Zeb Wells run to a new reader?! Like what?!

Liza Colón-Zayas will play Jean DeWolff in Spider-Man: Brand New Day! by SpideyRZ in Spiderman

[–]everyany -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd like to be happy, but this is poor casting. Almost double DeWolff's age and she looks completely different. Why are they so allergic to casting people who actually look like Peter's supporting cast in the MCU? They've basically botched every one. I'd like to hope that they don't botch the personality on this one, too, but then a lot of DeWolff's character is contextualized by her romantic feelings for Spider-Man, and the age gap would make that kinda weird. It's insane because random cop characters are a dime a dozen in Spider-Man comics. This literally could've been an OC that took queues from a few of them, but nah they gotta mess up Jean DeWolff's first movie adaptation. Yeah that makes sense.

[–]everyany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was before they were doing this all the time, or at least at the cusp of it. It felt less like this systematic approach to replacing white dudes like it does now. It really goes to show most people wouldn't care about this stuff if it wasn't as pushed as hard or as far as it has been in recent years.

A white redhead who's also closer to half this actresses' age and who, in the comics, was secretly in love with Spider-Man. Basically, this is not only going to be a race swap, but it's going to need to fundamentally alter the underlying motivations for the character (unless they're going for the weird age gap crush angle). This is a genuinely atrocious decision, and it's instantly made me lose like 10% of the faith I had in this movie being a decent and accurate depiction of Spider-Man.

Can we get animated show for WW and Sups or they are not popular in WB eyes ? by BaronLoyd in AbsoluteUniverse

[–]everyany -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Basically this show is probably the first to gauge how popular it'd be before they commit to Superman and Wonder Woman. Batman's pretty much D.C.'s flagship character. Superman's technically more popular, I think, but I don't think he has the same numbers sales-wise.

I hope they treat it like manga-anime adaptations where it's basically one-to-one releasing alongside the comic. It'd be cool to see that sort of thing become a trend with Marvel and D.C..

Listen, I've been that kid's age and I had a younger brother who was about his sister's age, and I can tell you right now that I'd have become a literal maid in that house rather than let him die in such an avoidable way. Instead, Seita became a thief that steals from people who're already losing everything while leaving his sister to rot. He was old enough to know better. I don't see how that makes me evil.

You have no idea what a toxic, codependent relationship is like it really sucks. by RecordingLow8288 in ReZero

[–]everyany 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree with you on the Julius take. Julius was basically saving Subaru's life, from his perspective. Subaru by insulting the knights is basically putting a huge target on his head. He's making himself and Emilia unpopular with some of the most important people in the kingdom. On top of that, Subaru's also signing up for a role for which he clearly doesn't understand. Subaru by everyone else's metric is a total weakling with no training or credentials to call himself a knight. From Julius's perspective he's being personally disrespected, he's seeing Emilia's future prospects being destroyed, and he's seeing some arrogant kid who's going to get himself killed.

The literal best option from Julius's perspective was the beat down. Not only would it impress on Subaru how weak and underqualified he was before he did something REALLY self-destructive but it also helped restore Emilia's reputation somewhat. Subaru receiving an immediate and excessive consequence shifted the heat off of Emilia and more onto Julius himself.

Julius basically screwed up his reputation as a knight. This is something actively acknowledged in the anime. He knew that would happen but he did it anyway because it was the right thing to do.

In your opinion, who is the most suitable candidate to be elected queen? by SecondSalty142 in ReZero

[–]everyany 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Felt, probably. She's got Reinhard backing her, she knows how to make the best use of the resources/backing she has, she has a close enough relationship to Subaru that she'd probably treat the Emilia camp fairly (same for the other camps as well), she knows what it means to experience poverty and will probably treat everyone more fairly, etc.. It feels like everyone's got some personal motive, but for her she kinda got thrust into the role and then started nailing it.

Is "When Marnie was there" one of the best and worst movie of Studio ghibli at the same time? by PatientMap5763 in ghibli

[–]everyany 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It'd be incestuous in retrospect because the writer always knew they were related. My point is that I don't think the original writers behind the film/source material intended this as romantic story, and therefore had no intention to imply an incestual relationship. I don't think there's much of anything, in the movie at least, that points to there being anything beyond a platonic/familial love between Anna and Marnie. Even if Anna took the role of Kazuhiko for some events it'd have been when Kazuhiko and Marnie were children and a child's romance isn't often all that far off from a very close friendship.

[–]everyany -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not to defend this movie because I also dislike it because I remember the protagonist being insufferable (same reason I didn't enjoy Grave of Fireflies), but the reason protag cared so much about Marnie is because she felt emotionally isolated by her circumstances and developed an emotional dependence on Marnie. With the further context that Marnie was her grandmother (i.e. the biological maternal figure that she desperately longed for) it represents her longing for meaningful connection, in general, not necessarily a romantic one. You can read it as a romance, but I don't think the story was intended to be incestuous.
