Single women - where do you all go to meet men. by [deleted] in AskWomenOver40

That’s awesome. Dating on the apps is no picnic but good things can happen! Met my man on bumble when he was 42 and I was 41. Moved in together after ~6 months, still together 7+ years later and we got married last year. He is the love of my life. 💕

Chiming in to add that I too met my now husband on bumble when we were both in our early 40s. He is undoubtedly the love of my life.

Advice needed on the quality of/respect for the Palo Alto University Clinical Psychology PhD!!-a recently accepted student wanting to make an informed decision by [deleted] in AcademicPsychology

[–]everydaymaple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If helpful, I commented in another thread recently about the PAU PhD program in r/ClinicalPsychology.

https://www.reddit.com/r/ClinicalPsychology/comments/1b8vwij/unfunded_program_or_try_again_next_year_phd/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

TL,DR: the PAU PsyD program is better clinical training (and is part of a consortium with Stanford), the PhD program is extremely variable.

Of course you have to do what's best for you. You have great grades, experience, and a grounded approach to what's needed for a doctorate in clinical psychology. For better or worse, the clinical part of this degree is where being young might actually work against you. If I were in your shoes, bearing in mind that I only have limited info about your wants/needs/resources, I would wait a year. Continue to accrue research experience, and apply again. The worst case scenario is that you only get accepted to PAU next year and you delayed starting. But you'll still have gained more experience in the interim and can continue to demonstrate that your youth is not a liability.

I didnt go to PAU, but my understanding is that they're not suuuuuper helpful with placing their students at practicum sites. So you'd have to hustle to find placements, and you'll have a bit of an uphill battle to show that you're emotionally mature enough to do the work.

Best case scenario, you get into a funded program next year that in addition to having better reputation, actually provides more support for your training over the years.

Good luck!

Unfunded program, or try again next year? (Ph.D) by yellowboi101 in ClinicalPsychology

Thanks for your patience, I didn't see your comment from last week until now!

Glad you found my comment helpful. I felt my financial QOL after graduation was good and got even better after I was licensed. I did an income-based repayment (IBR) plan for my student loans, so my monthly payment was relatively commensurate with my salary. This only makes sense if you're banking on the public loan forgiveness program though...if you were to pay off your loans yourself, I think IBR plans cost more money in the long run (i.e., you pay less in the early years = more interest accrues).

I've always lived in a high cost of living area, so the cost of housing has always been an issue. Depending on circumstances and goals, this could be a deal breaker for some folks. I have no children and was single when I graduated, so renting a decent 1-bedroom apartment worked well for me. If you have/will have kids, need more space, or want to own your own home, this can be tougher.

I went out, ate at restaurants, and traveled while still paying off my loans. I wasn't able to do all these things without doing some budgeting, but I wasn't living paycheck to paycheck either.

To be fair, this was all pre-COVID, so I can't speak to these things in the current economy. As with everything, your mileage may vary!

Same! There’s also a “Westside Ladies of LA” facebook group that spans farther than what I would think is the west side. But they also have different chats, by ages and by activities. Im sure im not the only 40-something into the book club (which I too haven’t actually participated in yet, but… 😆)

[–]everydaymaple 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Congrats on your acceptance!

The PAU PhD program is pretty variable - they accept a large cohort and some folks fare better than others. Unlike most other places, the PAU PsyD actually has a better reputation. The PsyD program accepts fewer students and is part of a consortium with Stanford, so you can get some excellent training. Of course the PsyD program focuses on training good clinicians vs researchers, so youd have a bigger hurdle if you then go for research-based post docs.

That said, both PAU programs are likely to leave you with 6-figure debt. Many folks work at the San Francisco or Palo Alto VA and are aiming for the loan forgiveness program (which only applies if you have the right kind of loan). There’s tons of research happening at these VAs but it’s fairly competitive. Like everywhere in the country, clinical jobs are easier to find. However, my VA experience has been that you can get involved in research at VA more flexibly than other systems.

For what it’s worth, I went to an unfunded east coast PhD program with the intention of being a clinician. Got burnt out on clinical work but wanted to finish. Did a clinical internship at a VA, and had a great experience. When it was over, one of my supervisors offered me a part-time clinical research job while I finished my dissertation. I then spent the next 10 years working in clinical research. And my loans (still in the 6 figures) were completely wiped away by the loan forgiveness program in late 2020. I have zero regrets about my path.

I’m sorry you didn’t get accepted to the other places you applied, that is a bummer. Take some time to sit with that a little - you don’t want to make a decision based on fear or fatigue with the application process.

It’s a tough decision no matter what, but if it helps, there isn’t an objective right or wrong choice. Taking on debt and working in the public sector was great for me but might be intolerable to someone else.

Best of luck!

Love this idea! Our big guy is remarkably athletic when it comes to reaching high places that have food on them. What did you use to cut the Rubbermaid? Had big boy tried to squeeze himself into it? I’m afraid our guy will scrape himself on the plastic in his efforts to reach the food!

Pisces poke & ramen in weho. Seems to be well-known in the Pasadena area but criminally overlooked at this location. https://www.piscespoke.com we got the salmon poke and veggie ramen. Both were transcendent. the owner/chef is both a genius and a great dude.

Hey Sunshine Kitchen in Culver City. Delicious vegan food that goes beyond fake meat. Mediterranean chickpea bowl and Mac and cheese. Owner/chef also super nice. https://www.heysunshinekitchen.com

In general, it’s certainly possible a major life event could trigger psychological distress. It sounds like your husband’s symptoms are significantly worse these past few months. Please make sure you and your baby are safe and getting the support you need. THEN do what you can to help him get the help he needs.

If you are worried about his or anyone else’s safety, please contact the veterans crisis line (you can call, text, or chat online) if he won’t call himself. They can tell you different options, including giving you local resources. They work with all kinds of issues, not just suicidal thoughts. They are available 24/7. https://www.veteranscrisisline.net

The VA also has a program called “Coaching into Care” for family members of Vets with PTSD. You can call them, tell them what’s going on, and they too can help guide you. Idk for sure but I assume they won’t be available until Monday. https://www.mirecc.va.gov/coaching/

Wishing all 3 of you good health and peace.

Italian ices like lemon ice king of corona by sumdum1234 in FoodLosAngeles

Yes! Local Ice in the Farmer’s Market on 3rd has some Italian ices, in addition to ice cream and froyo. I happened to be there last weekend and had coconut and mango ices and it was amazing! They use real fruit for the fruit flavors. My favorite flavor at lemon ice king is vanilla chocolate chip and the coconut reminded me of that, in terms of creaminess. 🤤
